Description
SPECIFICATION
Apparatus for supporting disabled persons
This invention concerns apparatus for moving disabled persons.
There are known a multiplicity of forms of wheelchair for moving disabled persons.
However, disabled persons have to lift themselves or be lifted from known wheelchairs when, for example, they wish to get into bed. For a person lifting a disabled person, the wheelchair is often an impediment, and when a disabled person has to be lifted into a bath the presence of the wheelchair alongside the bath usually presents a considerable obstacle, so that it is often easier to halt the wheelchair some distance from the bath and to carry the disabled person to the bath.
In my co-pending British Patent Application No: 21 04446A there is described support apparatus for supporting a disabled person in a bath, which apparatus comprises a support assembly adapted to be secured in a bath, a pneumatic bellows mounted on a base portion of the support assembly, and a seat and backrest assembly which is supported on the bellows and guided by a backrest support portion of the support assembly so that the latter controls the attitude of the seat and backrest assembly as the latter is raised or lowered by inflation or deflation of the bellows.
This support apparatus supports the disabled person in the bath and obviates the need to lift the disabled person into and out of the bath.
Furthermore, the support apparatus can be provided with means to enable a disabled person to be supported whilst being moved to one side of the bath ready to be lifted into a wheelchair.
An object of the present invention is to facilitate a disabled person being moved from a wheelchair onto another supporting surface provided, for example, by a bed or by said apparatus described in my said co-pending application.
According to the present invention there is
provided lifting apparatus which forms part of a wheelchair or which is adapted to be secured to a wheelchair of a kind having removable or no armrests so that the lifting apparatus rests on a seat portion of the wheelchair, the lifting apparatus comprising a frame, an inflatable bag or bellows device disposed upon a base, and a seat and backrest assembly including a seat disposed upon the bag or bellows device; the frame including a backrest support portion upstanding from the base and connected to a backrest of the seat and backrest assembly so as to guide and
control the attitude of the latter as the latter is
raised or lowered by inflation or deflation of the bag or bellows device; the seat having flank panels
hingedly secured to the sides of the seat; characterised in that the lifting apparatus further comprises releasable retaining means to retain the flank panels in a raised condition in which the latter
extend upwards from the seat; stay means
adapted to be extended to either side of the
backrest support portion, the stay means having a
free end portion provided with a clamp or connector device; and backrest extension means adapted to be disposed so as to provide a supplementary backrest alongside the backrest.
The supplementary backrest is preferably supported upon the backrest to move therewith.
The base may be provided with fastener means such as straps or clamps either to engage the seat portion of a wheelchair or to engage a wheel shallow trolley so that the combination of the trolley and lifting apparatus serves as and effectively constitutes a lifting wheelchair.
The backrest extension means may be adapted to be relocated to serve as a headrest for the lifting apparatus. Alternatively the backrest extension means may be movable to serve as an armrest for the lifting apparatus, and in the latter instance the armrest may be adapted to engage a respective one of the flank panels to serve as the or part of the releasable retaining means, and two said backrest extension means are preferably provided.
Each backrest extension means preferably comprises a mounting at a lateral margin of the backrest and an elongate member, and the elongate member is preferably movable about a vertical axis provided by the mounting so that the supplementary backrest provides a horizontally elongate lateral extension of the backrest. The length of the elongate member is preferably approximately twice the width of the respective flank panel.
The invention will be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings, wherein: Figure 1 shows a first embodiment of lifting apparatus of the invention in situ upon a wheelchair in front elevation, in conjunction with support apparatus disposed in a bath;
Figure 2 shows the first embodiment of lifting apparatus in side elevation, in situ upon the wheelchair;
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 1 showing a second embodiment of the lifting apparatus in combination with wheeled means so as to serve as a wheelchair;
Figure 4 shows the second embodiment in side elevation together with the wheeled means; and
Figures 5 and 6 show part of a modified form of the lifting apparatus in front elevation and side elevation respectively.
Referring to Figures 1 to 4, the support apparatus and both embodiments of lifting apparatus each comprise a frame 10, a bellows device 11, and a seat and backrest assembly 12.
The frame comprises an upstanding tubular backrest support portion 1 3 of inverted U-shape and a base 14 which includes a moulding in which end portions of the tube forming the portion 13 are secured.
The seat and backrest assembly 1 2 comprises a seat 1 6 and a backrest 1 5 which are constituted primarily by a moulding. The backrest is provided with a back closure panel which is fastened at the rear of the backrest to retain parallel portions of the tube of the portion 13 in slideways provided in the backrest 1 5.
The bellows device 11 is disposed between the base 14 and the seat 16, and is provided with adjustable valve means (not shown) which can be preset to limit the height by which the seat is lifted when the bellows is inflated, and with manually operable valve means which controls the supply of compressed air to the bellows and allows the bellows to be deflated.
The seat 16 is provided with flank panels 1 7 which are hingedly connected to the sides of the seat.
The support apparatus is provided with manuallly actuable suckers, not shown, to anchor the frame to a bath 1 8 (shown in broken lines), having a rim 19.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2, the lifting apparatus is disposed upon a seat portion 20 of a wheelchair 21.
The wheelchair has sockets 22 for detachable armrests (not shown) and has lockable castor wheels 23. The base 14 is provided with straps 24 which serve as fastener means to secure the base to the seat portion 20.
The lifting apparatus has backrest extension means, which comprise elongate members 27.
Adjustable mountings, at the lateral margins of the backrest, comprise sockets 25 secured to or provided on the back panel to receive shafts 26.
The shafts carry the elongate members 27. The shafts 26 are preferably a friction fit in the sockets 25 (and the latter may be provided with manually adjustable clamping or locking means 25A to hold or lock the shafts in selected positions) so that the elongate members can be individually swung, about horizontal axes provided by the mountings, from a down position in which they lie above and generally parallel to the sides of the seat to serve as arm rests, to an upright position in which the elongate members extend upwards alongside the backrest, and so that the spacing (if any) between the elongate members and the backrest can be adjusted by moving the shafts axially with respect to the sockets. The underside of each armrest is padded or shaped so that, when the elongate member is in the down position, the armrest engages the free margin of the adjacent flank panel 1 7 (when the latter is raised) to serve as releasable means for retaining the latter in the raised position, and so that in the upright position the elongate member serves as a supplementary backrest alongside the backrest 1 5 to provide a vertically elongate lateral extension of the backrest 1 5.
Stay means, in the form of a tubular stay 28 having an adjustable pivotal clamp 29 at or adjacent each end, is provided on the lifting apparatus, and the stay 28 may be of telescopic form so that both clamps 29 may be secured to the frame when the length of the stay is minimised, for storage.
In use, a disabled person can be seated (in a normal upright sitting position with the knees bent) on the lifting apparatus, in situ upon the wheelchair, and can be transported to alongside the bath, preferably whilst the bellows are deflated so that the seat 1 6 is close to the seat portion 20.
The bellows device 11 of the support apparatus in the bath is then inflated until the seat is just
below the level of the rim 1 9 so that one flank
panel rests on the rim and the other on the wall alongside the bath, as shown in Figure 1.
The stay 28 of the lifting apparatus is then clamped to the upper portions of the frames 10, and the or some of the wheels 23 are locked to secure the lifting apparatus and wheelchair in position alongside the bath 1 8.
The bellows device of the lifting apparatus is then inflated to raise the seat some distance above the level of the rim 1 9, the armrest 27 adjacent the bath is raised to provide the supplementary backrest and allow the flank panel 1 7 therebelow to be swung down to rest on top of the flank panel resting on the brim, and the shaft 26 is extended to move the supplementary backrest to a position generally mid-way between the backrests, as shown in Figure 1.
It will be readily appreciated that the overlapping flank panels form a bridge across which many of the less severely disabled persons can propel themselves with little or no assistance: that the more severely disabled persons can be eased across the bridge without having to be lifted bodily; that the stay means stabilises the position of the apparatus if the person or the helper pushes or exerts a thrust on the apparatus: and that the armrest serves as an intermediate supplementary backrest to provide support and reassurance for the person.
When the person is seated on the support apparatus, the bellow device can be deflated to
lower the person into the bath, the flank panels being lowered with the seat to rest on the side walls of the bath.
Before the person is raised from the bath the lifting apparatus is adjusted by deflating the bellows device to lower the seat to below the level of the brim. Thereafter the bellows device of the support apparatus is inflated to raise the seat to above the level of the brim and to cause one of the flank panels to rest on that flank panel of the lifting apparatus which rests on the brim to form a bridge for returning the person to the lifting apparatus.
The lifting apparatus can also be used to
transfer the person onto a bed or other article providing a supporting surface on which one of the flank panels can rest, and the apparatus is particularly effective if the bed or article has a frame to which the stay means can be secured.
Referring to Figures 3 and 4, the lifting apparatus is disposed on a trolley 30 having lockable castor wheels 31, and the base 14 is secured to the trolley so that the apparatus forms part of a wheelchair. Alternatively the wheels 31 or other suitable, e.g. larger wheels, may be secured to the base so that the apparatus and wheels together serve as a wheelchair. Two pairs of horizontal sockets 32 are secured to the back panel of the backrest 1 5 adacent to the sides of the backrest, and a pair of vertical sockets 33 are secured to the upper portion of the frame. A headrest 34 (Figure 4) provided with a U-shaped tubular mounting 35 is normally located so that the limbs of the mounting 35 are located in the vertical sockets 33.The headrest 34 can be withdrawn from the sockets 33 and engaged in either of the pairs of sockets 32 to serve as backrest extension means, as shown in Figure 3.
The sockets 32 may have releasable means to engage and lock the limbs of the mounting 35 in a selected position to allow the spacings between the backrest extension means and the backrest 1 5 to be set at a selected distance.
Straps 36 with press stud fasteners are provided on the sides of the backrest, and fasteners are provided on the flank panels 17 to serve as releasable means for retaining the flank panels 1 7 in a raised position, the fasteners being releasable to allow the flank panels 1 7 to be lowered.
The apparatus may be provided with the stay means 28 and clamps 29, but if the support apparatus is provided with a headrest and sockets similar to the headrest 34 and vertical sockets 33, the stay means may comprise a tubular adjustably telescopic stay having end portions provided with connectors e.g. lugs or adjustable extensions, to engage in the vertical sockets of the support apparatus and lifting apparatus, or the clamps of one of them may be movable longitudinally of the stay to vary the distance between the clamps.
Referring to Figures 5 and 6, the lifting apparatus is provided with a modified form of backrest extension, while the remainder of the apparatus is similar to that previously described.
Each backrest extension means comprises a padded elongate member 40 adjustably located upon a support 41 carried by a mounting 42 mounted upon a lateral marginal portion of the backrest 1-5.
The elongate member 40 and support 41 are releasably held in either of a first condition or a second condition by holding means 44 which is releasable to permit arcuate movement between said conditions about a nominally vertical axis 45 through the mounting 42. A further holding means 46 is releasable to permit the elongate member 40 to be moved arcuately relative to the support 41 about a nominally horizontal axis 47 extending longitudinally of the member 40.In the first condition the elongate member 40 extends laterally of the backrest to provide a horizontally elongate supplementary backrest 40A (Figure 5) having a length of about twice the width of the flank panel 1 7A therebelow so as to substantially bridge between the two backrests 1 5, 1 5A as indicated in Figure 5, and the panel is turned relative to the support so that a main padded surface provides an upstanding backrest surface.
The other elongate member is shown in the second condition in which it provides an armrest 40B, and the elongate member is turned so that said main padded surface is uppermost and so that the uppermost edge of the raised flank panel 1 7 is engaged in a recess in the undersurface of the armrest. One of the clamps 29A is movable longitudinally of the respective end portion 28A of the stay.
The apparatus may be utilised in conjunction with, or form part of, an electrically powered wheelchair; and any suitable pump means may be employed to provide the necessary supply of compressed air, e.g. a hand of foot pump, or an electrically powered pump, and such pumps may be mounted on or carried by the wheelchair.
