Abstract
215,366. Otto, E. April 30, 1923, [Convention date]. Screw and like propellers. -The upper pair of planes 1 of an aeroplane are mounted upon a rotatable mast 3 which may be coupled to the engine so that this pair of planes can be used as a lifting propeller. The mast 3 rotates in ballbearings 5, 6 mounted in the fuselage, and carries at its lower end a friction disc 7, which is engaged by a driving disc 7<1> slidably feathered on a shaft 9 adapted to be coupled to the engine by a clutch 10 controlled by a hand lever 28. The tractor propeller 30 is uncoupled by a clutch 21, operated by a hand-lever 29, and is arrested by a brake 20 actuated by a hand lever 31. The upper planes 1 are mounted on tubular shafts 12, rotatably held in the mast 3 and fitted at their adjacent ends with flanges 23, which are connected by links 11<1> to a rod 11 passing through the mast 3 and connected at its lower end to a grooved collar 24 slidably mounted upon the mast 3. The links 11<1> operate at opposite sides of the flanges 23, so that when the rod 11 is raised or lowered through the medium of a fork 25 adjusted by a screwed spindle 13 and hand wheel 14, the upper planes 1 are turned in opposite directions. The speed of rotation of the planes 1 may be varied by sliding the driving disc 7<1> along the shaft 9 by means of a hand wheel 15 and fork 22.
