Abstract
A composition for embellishing and holding hair, comprises as the essential active constituent a carboxylic type resin of acrylic origin neutralised by an inorganic or organic alkaline agent. The composition is in the form of an aqueous gel and may include a vinyl pyrrolidone polymer or copolymer as a setting agent. The carboxylic acrylic resin may be, for example, a copolymer of acrylic acid and a sucrose allyl ether.
Description
SPECIFICATION
Hair treatment compositions
The present invention concerns new cosmetic compositions for treating hair, particularly for holding hair, but also for improving its general condition and making it more attractive.
It is important to note that from time immemorial gels of various origins have been produced for embellishing and holding hair. However, none of these gels have ever given complete satisfaction, as they either left the hair sticky or greasy, or else produced a sort of "dust" particularly difficult to eliminate.
The compositions of the invention are characterised by the presence of both a carboxylic type resin of acrylic origin-preferably resulting from the copolymerisation of acrylic acid with sucrose allylic ether-and an alkaline agent neutralising for this resin, thus causing its gelification while keeping it transparent.
These compositions offer the advantage of a good workability without making the hair sticky and greasy, and without leaving any dust.
The invention can be worked in various ways depending on the intended use of the composition.
In a first embodiment, the composition aims at holding the hair, while leaving it soft and malleable: in this case the composition can contain a moistening agent, chosen preferably among alcohols, such as polyols in particular.
In a second embodiment, the composition aims at setting the hair, with more or less stiffness, and to this effect it contains an additional synthetic resin, preferably a vinylpyrolidone polymer or copolymer.
In all cases, the composition may contain additional agents for preservation, and also for making it more attractive to the consumer, such as colourings, scents, pigments, flakes and such like.
The resin being, together with its neutralising agent, the constitutive element of the compositions according to the present invention-and more particularly the copolymerisation (or the reticulation) product of acrylic acid with sucrose allylic ether-is present in these compositions in proportion of approximately 0.1 to 2%. One can use to this effect the product commercialised under the brand name CARBOMER 940 or CARBOPOL 940 by Goodrich Co.
(U.S.A.).
As a neutralising agent for this resin, and also as an essential constituent for the compositions according to the present invention, one can use virtually any mineral alkaline compound, such as NaOH, KOH, NH4OH. borax, and similar, or else organic compounds, such as plain or substituted amines, for instances mono-, di- or tri-ethanolamine, isopropylamine, ethylhexylamine, triethylenamine, triamylamine, and such like. This agent is present in the composition in such proportion as to neutralise the resin, partially or totally or even in slight excess, for example from about 0.1 to 3%.
To obtain the compositions according to the present invention, one prepares separately first an aqueous suspension of the resin to which a preservative agent may be added (which naturally must be compatible with the other constituents), and then an aqueous solution of the neutralising agent with other additional agents. By simply mixing the suspension with the solution a gel is formed instantly, thus being immediately available for use.
In the second embodiment of the present invention, the composition contains a certain proportion of another polyvinylpyrrolidone type resin, acting as setting agent. In this case, the nature and proportion of this agent will be proportional to the degree of rigidity desired for the hair. However, the proportion should not exceed 20%. As polyvinylpyrrolidone copolymers. one can use for instance copolymers with dimethylaminoethyle methacrylate commercialised under the brand names AGENT AT-858, AGENT AT-937, and COPOLYMER 845 by GAF Corp.
(U.S.A.). Thus for instance about 3% of polyvinylpyrrolidone added to such a gel offers a composition which, besides the particular effects of the gel and of the resin on hair, provides for setting of the hair, which can be light or quite accentuated depending on the nature and the quantity of setting agent used.
Lastly, as previously indicated, some additional agents can be included into the compositions according to the present invention, either for their stability and preservation-for instance calcium sequestering compounds such as sodium salt of ethylene-diamine-tetra-acetic acid (EDTA), commercialised in particular under the brand name TRILON B-or else for making them more attractive, for instance by adding appropriate colourings or scents.
The invention will be further described by way of example.
EXAMPLE 1: Non-setting composition
The constituents of this composition are as follows (in % by weight).
CARBOPOL 940 0.80
Triethanolamine 0.84
Glycerin (moistening) 0.50
Chloracetamide + Sodium Benzoate (preservative agent) 0.30
TRILON B 0.10

Polyoxyethylenised capric and caprylic glycerides (solubilising agents) 0.15
Scent 0.10
Colouring 0.33
The remainder (complement to 100%) of the composition consists of water used for preparation, as previously indicated.
it is important to note that the hydrogenised and polyoxyethylenised caster oil used as solubilising agent for the scent also adds to the pleasant texture of the composition.
This composition does not act as setting agent, but it has an embellishing and softening effect on the hair, while at the same time holding it in place.
The other two compositions, on the contrary, set the hair when drying.
