Abstract

214,936. Rivers, H. O. Oct. 27, 1922. Lock mechanism, operated by non-rotating key; locks, revolving-barrel. - A pintumbler revolving- barrel lock is constructed so that on insertion of the key, the barrel may be turned by a handle. The handle is inoperative until the pin-tumblers are moved by the key to release the barrel for rotation and to connect the barrel with the handle spindle. The key-hole may be formed below or in the handle. In the form shown in Figs. 14 and 15, the handle spindle 8 rotates idly in the hollow barrel 5 this being locked to the casing by the pin-tumblers 17. An extension on the barrel operates the latch. The normal position of the lock is shown in Fig. 15. When the key is inserted, it lifts the pin-tumblers 17 to align breaks 18 with the periphery of the barrel 19, the upper parts 15 of the tumblers entering aligned recesses in the barrel 19 and handlespindle 8 against the spring-pressed plate 10<a>. The handle-spindle 8 and barrel are then locked together by the pins 15 and may be turned by the handle to operate the latch. Fig. 14 shows the lock after the barrel has been thus turned through 180‹, and the key withdrawn to allow the pins 17 to drop. When the lock has been operated and the parts returned to the position shown in Fig. 15, attempts to lift the tumblers 17 are prevented by turning the handle so that the solid part 19 of the spindle is over the pins 15. In the form shown in locked position, in Fig. 16, the key is inserted into the handle. To operate, the key is inserted into the key-hole 32 in the handle spindle, lifting the pins 33 to free the barrel 19<1> from the casing and lock together the barrel and spindle 22 so that the turning of the handle rotates the barrel for actuating the lock. The spring plates 10, 10<a> situated in the recess in the handle spindle 8 may be continuous or may be divided into as many segments as there are pin-tumblers.
