Abstract

A cue support comprises a weighted base 10, 30 having a lower friction sheet 26, 32 and either a cue supporting and guiding member 22 pivotally mounted on the base (Fig. 1) or a member 38 slidably mounted on the base (Fig. 3). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements Relating to Cue Supports for Playing Billiards or Similar Games This invention relates to cue supports for playing billiards and similar games such as snooker and pool and its main object is to provide a cue rest device which will obviate the necessity for the normal use of using two hands-one to hold a cue while the other holds the rest or bridge.
According to the invention a cue support comprises a cue support member slidably and/or pivotally mounted on a base, said base having adequate weight and having on its underneath an attachment suitable for engaging a table with frictional engagement, the weight and friction being such as to prevent movement of the base while the cue is being used.
In a constructional form of the invention the weight of the total cue support is from 70 to 130 grams preferably 85 to 120 grams, and the attachment is an elastic material attached to the bottom of the base e.g., a thin sheet of rubber or polymeric elastomer attached by adhesive to the flat underside of the base.
The cue support member is preferably large enough to enable the cue to be moved to different angles in it and is in the form of two guide horns with a cue space between them.
The cue support may be pivoted on a vertical axis.
Preferably however the cue support is mounted to be slidable laterally i.e. transversely of the median line of the cue in the cue support member, without having a pivotal movement.
The invention will now be further described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein: Figure 1 is a front view partly in elevation and partly in sectional of a cue support made in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 is a side elevation of the upper part thereof; Figure 3 is an elevational view of anotherform of cue support made in accordance with the invention; and Figures 4 and 5 are an end view and plan respectively of the cue support shown in Figure 3.
The cue support comprises a base 10 preferably made of brass to provide the necessary weight. The base has a flat disc-like lower part 11 and a central upstanding column 12 having a central vertical bore.
A spindle 13 is pivotally located in the bore. The spindle has an enlarged diameter part 16 seating on the top of the column. A screw 17 is screwed into the lower end of the spindle with the interposition of a washer 18 which engages a shoulder formed by the enlarged diameter lower part 20 of the bore.
Integral with the part 16 is a horizontal bar 22 having one or more depressions 23 in its upper surface. On opposite ends of the bar 22 there are upstanding horns or projections 24, the upper ends of which are spaced apart closely enough to prevent passage of a cue therethrough so that the support can be picked up on a cue and relocated on the table.
Athin sheet of rubber or like elastomer 26 is attached to the bottom flat surface of the base. The sheet 26 provides protection for the table and adequate friction to prevent movement of the support while the cue is being used.
Figures 3 to 5 show the preferred construction comprising a base 30 which may be made of metal or plastics or wood and in order to ensure that the support as a whole has a weight of 70 to 130 grams (preferably 100 to 120 grams) the base has a recess containing a lead weight 31.The bottom of the base is covered by a sheet 32 of rubber or other frictional material. The upper part of the base has a recess 33 through which passes a metal guide bar 36 in the form of a flat strip, the ends of which are fixed in the base 30. Two upstanding horns or projections 37 form a cue rest space between them which is large enough to enable the cue to swing to different angles and to pass freely through it.The horns are carried by a slide block 38 which has an undercut recess 40 in which the bar 36 is engaged so that the block 38 can slide freely transversely to the axis of the space between the horns 37.
1. A cue support for playing billiards and similar games comprising a cue support member slidably and/or pivotally mounted on a base, said base having adequate weight and having on its underneath an attachment suitable for engaging a table with frictional engagement, the weight and friction being such as to prevent movement of the base while the cue is being used.
2. A cue support as claimed in claim 1 wherein the attachment is a thin sheet of rubber or polymeric elastomer attached by adhesive to the flat underside of the base.
3. A cue support as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein the cue support member is in the form of two guide horns with a cue space between them.
4. A cue support as claimed in any of the preceding claims wherein the bottom of the base is circular and tapers in side view.
5. A cue support as claimed in claim 3 and 4, wherein the cue support member comprises a slide block having an undercut recess in which a flat straight bar fixed, in the base, is engaged so that the block can slide transversely to the axis of the space between the horns.
6. A cue support substantially as described with reference to Figures 1 and 2 or 3,4 and 5.
