Abstract
Apparatus for assembling open-topped tins 4 into layers and stacking them comprises a conveyor belt 2 which feeds the tins 4 between guide walls 3 in transverse and longitudinal rows. The tins are fed up against a reciprocable end stop 6 and are also controlled by two rows of pins 5 and 9. The pins 5 are movable upwards and downwards out of and into the tins in the direction of an arrow 11 and the pins 9 are movable in this way and also to and fro horizontally in the direction of an arrow 12. With the tins arranged as shown, the pins 5 and 9 are lowered into them and then the pins 9 and the end stop 6 are moved to the right to form a layer of tins on top of a previous layer 26. During this time the remaining tins on the conveyor are retained by the pins 5. The stack of two layers of tins is then lowered, the end stop is moved back to the left into the position shown and the pins 5 and 9 are raised to enable the conveyor to move more tins forwards and form another layer in a further cycle of operations. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Apparatus for arranging open tins or like containers or bodies thereof in rows side by side in layers
The invention relates to apparatus for arranging open tins or like containers or bodies thereof supplied upright by a conveyor belt in rows transverse to the direction of conveyance between para llel guide walls into layers of predetermined dimensions to enable the layers to be stacked one on top of another in an orderly array.
One form of such apparatus comprises a set of stop pins or other stop members having means for inserting them into and removing them from a row of the containers or bodies fed by the conveyor and temporarily retaining the containers or bodies against movement by the conveyor before the row reaches one side of the layerto be formed and an end stop for stopping the containers or bodies at the opposite side of the layer. Such apparatus is known.
The known apparatus has the advantage that the stop members not only have to retain a row of containers or bodies, but also push back over a given distance a very large number of the containers or bodies which are subjected to friction on the conveyor belt in a direction opposite to that in which they are being conveyed.
The object of the present invention is to avoid such an undesirable load on the stop members. To this end, according to this invention, in apparatus of the form initially described the set of stop members is located in a row spaced a distance at least equal to the dimension of the containers or bodies in the direction of the conveyance from the one side of the layer, the end stop is movable to and fro in the direction of conveyance over a distance at least equal to the said dimension between the opposite side and a position within the opposite side, and a second set of stop pins or other stop members are provided in a row between the first set of stop members and the end stop, the second set of stop members having means for inserting them into and removing them from a row of the containers or bodies and means for reciprocating them in the same direction as the end stop whereby, in a cycle of operations, both sets of stop members are removed to enable part of a layer of containers to be formed against the end stop, with the end stop in its position within the opposite side, both sets of stop members are inserted, the end stop and the second set of stop members are moved in a direction away from the first set of stop members with the end stop adopting the position at the opposite side so that a layer of the predetermined dimensions is formed and further containers or bodies fed by the conveyor are retained away from the layer and then the layer is removed and the first set of stop members are removed and the end stop is moved into its position within the opposite side to enable a further cycle of operations to start.
The apparatus may further comprise an upwardly and downwardly movable platform upon which an initial layer is formed and means for moving the platform downwards after each layer is formed to remove the layer and allow the next layer to be formed on top of a preceding layer to form a stack of the layers of the containers or bodies.
Two examples of apparatus in accordance with the invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of part of one example of the apparatus;
Figures 2 to 7 are highly diagrammatic side views of the apparatus illustrating successive phases of a cycle of operations of the apparatus shown in Figure 1; and
Figure 8 is a diagrammatic plan view of part of a second example.
Figure 1 shows apparatus 1 for arranging a plurality of open-topped tins 4, which are supplied by a conveyor belt 2 between parallel guide walls 3 in rows both in the direction of conveyance and transversely to this direction, into layers to enable them to be stacked in an orderly stacking pattern.
The apparatus 1 comprises six stop pins 5 which are insertable into and removable from the tins 4 and temporarily retain the tins 4 before they reach the desired layer, and an end stop 6 at the end of the layer. The stop pins 5 are located at a distance equal to substantially one and a half times the diameter of each tin horizontally from the adjacent side of the layer to be formed. This side is designated by reference numeral 7. The end stop 6 is displaceable to and fro over about one and a half tin diameters between the position shown in Figure 1 inside the opposite side of the layer to be formed and the opposite side thereof, which is designated by reference numeral 8.The apparatus 1 further comprises a second set of six pins 9, which are insertable into and removable from the tins 4 and are located between the stop pins 5 and the side 7 of the layer to be formed, the pins 9 being movable towards and away from the end stop 6 for pushing the tins 4 into their positions in the layer to be formed.
The arrow 10 indicates the direction in which the tins 4 are supplied by the conveyor belt 2. The double arrow 11 indicates the direction of displacement of the stop pins 5. The arrow 12 indicates the direction of horizontal displacement of a beam 13, which is also movable up and down in the direction indicated by an arrow 11 together with a beam 19 carrying the pins 5. Thus the pins 9 can move not only vertically but also horizontally, the vertical movement being equal to that of the pins 5. The arrow 14 indicates the direction of displacement of the end stop 6.
The beam 19 is carried by piston rods 15 of hydraulic or pneumatic rams 16 for effecting the vertical displacement in the direction of the arrow 11. Piston rods 17 carrying the beam 13. These piston rods are associated with rams 18 for effecting the horizontal displacement in the direction of the arrow 12.
The mode of operation of the apparatus 1 will be explained with reference to Figures 2 to 7.
Figure 2 illustrates how tins 4 supplied by the conveyor belt 2 are pushed in the direction of the arrow 10 against the end stop 6. In the phase of operation illustrated in Figure 2, a number of tins 4 have been assembled to form part of a layer. A previously formed lowermost layer 20 is supported on a carrying board 22, which is vertically dispiaceable in the direction of an arrow 21. This carrying board is displaceable by means (not shown) in a manner such that after the formation of each layer it is displaced downwards over a distance equal to the thickness of one layer.
In the stage of operation shown in figure 2 the pins 5 and 9 are in their topmost positions, whilst the pins 9 are in their extreme left hand positions.
After sufficient tins have been assembled to form a complete upper layer 23, the pins 5 and 9 are moved downwards, as shown in Figure 3, after which the pins 9 are moved to the right as shown in Figure 4, whilst the end stop 6 is displaced correspondingly to the right. The pins 5 serve as stops for temporarily preventing right hand displacement of the tins 4 still standing on the conveyor belt 2. The position of the end stop 6 shown in Figure 4 is such that the upper layer 23 is accurately located above the previously formed layer.
After the formation of the upper layer 23 and the separation thereof from the tins 4 subsequently supplied, the stack of layers is moved downwards in the direction of the arrow 24 so that the stage of operation illustrated in Figure 5 is reached. The displacement of the end stop 6 is performed with the aid of a ram 25. Subsequently the end stop 6 is slightly displaced further to the right, whilst at the same time the pins 9 are displaced to the left. This results in the position illustrated in Figure 6. In this stage of operation, the top face of the upper layer 23, which has just been lowered over the thickness of a layer is completely clear and is covered by a foil 26 supplied in the direction indicated by the arrow 27.
Such foils are also interposed between all the previously formed layers. The foils serve as separating means between the layers of tins in the stack in order to obtain an orderly stack and to avoid damage of the tin edges and penetration of dust into the tins.
Afterthefoil 26 has been deposited on the layer 23 an upward movement of the pins 5 will allow the tins 4 still standing on the conveyor belt 2 to be moved in a direction towards the end stop 6 which has meanwhile been displaced in the manner shown in
Figure 7 to its extreme left hand position. After thins the cycle of operations is repeated.
The example of the apparatus described above provides a very simple and cheap way of forming layers and stacks of tins or tin bodies; it ensures a high rate of assembly and prevents mechanical damage of the tins.
Figure 8 schematically shows an alternative stacking formation of the tins 4 with a corresponding disposition of the pins 5 and 9.
The number of pins may, of course, be varied and so also may the length of the layers to be formed, that is to say, the number of tins in the transport direction may be chosen at will.
