Abstract

214,548. Verschoyle, W. D. Sept. 24, 1923. Stoppers with valves.-Relates to closing caps, nozzes, and self-closing valves for collapsable tubes. The valve shown in Fig. 1 comprises a rubber diaphragm 17 secured by cement or the like around the flat edge 16 at the mouth of the tube 11, and provided with a minute central perforation or slit. The screw cap 14 is provided with a convex, hollow, domed portion 19 adapted to be perforated, or to be cut off by a knife, to permit the contents to be extruded without removing the cap. In a modification, the diaphragm is secured in position by providing it with a dovetailed marginal flange for engagement with a corresponding groove around the neck of the tube. Fig. 3 shows a valve comprising an unperforated diaphragm 17 secured at one part only of its margin by means of a wire, staple 25 passing through the diaphragm and through holes provided in the neck of the tube. It is necessary'to remove the cap 14 to allow this valve to operate. In another modification, shown in Fig. 4, the neck 12 of the tube is permanently closed at its upper end 28 and is provided with a lateral orifice 29. A septum 26 of rubber or like tubing is tightly received in a conical seating 27 around the neck of the tube and covers the lateral orifice 29. When the cap 14 is removed, compression of the tube forces the contents through the orifice and compels the septum 26 to yield and permit extrusion.
