Description

SPECIFICATION Antitheft device for motor vehicles acting in combination on the electric and hydraulic systems The present invention relates to an antitheft device for motor vehicles acting in combination on the electric and hydraulic systems of the type comprising a key-operated latch, which acts, on the one hand, upon at least a non-return valve, connected to a respective hydraulic circuit and, on the other hand, upon at least a switch interlocked with an electric circuit in order to cause the locking of said hydraulic circuit and the break of said electric circuit in one position thereof and the reinstatement both of the hydraulic and electric circuits in a second position thereof.
It is known that the types of antitheft devices suitable to render a vehicle more and more safe against ill-intentioned people are very numerous.
Among them, the antitheft devices that have found a considerable success are thpse providing a combined action on the electrical and hydraulic systems of the vehicle or of an heavier transport means such as a motor-lorry or a tractor semitrailer.
These devices substantially consist of a latch that can be operated by introducing a key into a appropriate lock which, when the antitheft device is connected, keeps the electrical engine ignition feeding contacts in an opening position and the hydraulic system that for example supplies the brakes with working fluid, in a closing position.
These antitheft devices have been quite successful owing to the fact that, though on the one hand the tampering with the electric system carried out by a skilled burglar is not an insuperable barrier, on the other hand the reinstatement of the hydraulic system is a hard work requiring a long time. Therefore, when the burglar realizes that he must face an obstacle of this kind, he may decide to give up his disreputable purposes.
The main object of the present invention is therefore to further improve the devices already known of the kind mentioned above making the intervention of ill-intentioned people who would want to take undue possession of the vehicle on which the antitheft device is mounted, more and more difficult and long.
A further important object of the invention is to provide an antitheft device which, while fulfilling the above mentioned object, is also very functional and has a reduced price relative to the degree of safety it can ensure.
These and further objects that will be more apparent from the following description are achieved, according to the invention, by an antitheft device for motor vehicles acting in combination on the electric and hydraulic systems, of the kind comprising a key-operated latch, which acts, on the one hand, upon at least a non-return valve connected to a respective hydraulic system and, on the other hand, upon at least a switch interlocked with an electric circuit in order to cause the locking of said hydraulic circuit and the break of said electric circuit in one position thereof, and the reinstatement both of the hydraulic and electric circuits in a second position thereof, characterized in that on the one side said latch carries a bar disposed at right angles to the latch itself from which a number of control rods lead off that cause the opening of the obturators of an equal number of non-return valves connected to the respective hydraulic circuits of the vehicle, and on the other side it appears in thrust relationship against a push-button controlling first and second pairs of contacts associated with corresponding electric circuits, said first pair of contacts being in an opening position when said second pair of contacts is closed and vice-versa.
Further features and advantages of the invention will become more apparent from the detailed description of a preferred but not restrictive embodiment of an antitheft device for motor vehicles acting in combination upon the electric and hydraulic systems, made hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawing, given by way of example only, in which the only figure shows a crosssectional view of the device according to the invention.
Referring to the above mentioned drawing, it has been generally indicated at 1 an antitheft device for motor vehicles acting in combination upon the electric and hydraulic systems, according to the invention. Said device 1 substantially consists of a pair of prismatic blocks 2 and 3 assembled to each other by means of a number of screws 4. The prismatic block 2 is provided with a conventional cylinder lock, generally indicated at 5 that is operated by a key 6. By turning the key 6 the transverse displacement of a latch 7 is obtained. Being this displacement as well as the way for obtaining it well-known and conventional, they will not be shown or described in more detail hereinafter.
In the second prismatic block 3 a prism-shaped recess 8 is provided that is intended to slidably house a bar 9 disposed at right angles to latch 7 and integral to the latter at one end 7a thereof.
The transverse bar 9 fixedly carries a number of control rods. In the figure three rods are shown, but they can also be two, four or more. These rods, indicated at 10,11 and 12 respectively, are disposed parallellyto one another and to latch 7 and are in a position to slide within respective holes 13, 14 and 15 obtained in the body of the prismatic block 3, upon interposition of seals 56,57 and 58. Each of said seals 56, 57 and 58 consists of two rubber-rings joined to each other in order to create an annular hollow space (56a, 57a and 58a) therebetween.
Holes 13, 14 and 15 bring recess 8 into communication with respective threaded housings indicated at 16, 17 and 18 respectively and provided on the prismatic block 3; they are designed to accommodate respective non-return valves generally indicated at 19,20 and 21. Each non-return valve is sealingly mounted, by the use of a seal 22, 23 and 24 respectively, in its corresponding housing 16, 17 and 18.
Said non-return valves 19, 20 and 21 consist of a hollow and threaded valve body 25, 26 and 27 within which ball-shaped obturators indicated at 28, 29 and 30 are located, each of them being thrusted, by means of a corresponding spring 31,32 and 33 upon which a pressure is exerted by a threaded insert 34, 35 and 36 provided with a through hole, against respective inlet holes 37, 38 and 39 allowing the passage of working fluid.
Control rods 10, 11 and 12 are provided with thin projections 10a, 1 la, 12a, intended to get engaged into holes 37, 38 and 39. Furthermore, piplines not shown in the figure leading off to an equal number of hydraulic circuits controlling the motor vehicle operating members, are fitted into the inner threaded portions of the valve bodies 25, 26 and 27.
At its other end 7b, latch 7 is in thrust relationship with the push-button 40 of an electric switch generally indicated at 41. This switch substantially consists of a box-shaped envelope 42 within which said push-button 40 is slidably housed, against the action of a coil spring 43.
Switch 41 bears two pairs of double contacts indicated at 44 and 45 respectively. One pair 44 consists of a fixed contact 46 leading offto a terminal 47 and of a movable contact 48 which, owing to the action of a coil spring 49, is elastically located within a hollow lug 50 of push-button 40. The second pair of contacts 45 in turn consists of a fixed contact 51 to which a terminal 52 is integral and of a movable contact 53 which, owing to the presence of a coil spring 54, is elastically located within a second hollow lug 55 of push-button 40.
It should be observed that contacts 51 and 53 are connected to each other and therefore permit current flow, when contacts 46 and 48 are disconnected and vice-versa. That allows for example to connect contacts 51 and 53 to the electric engine ignition system by means of a connection to the battery, the starter or the electrovalve, while contacts 46 and 48 may be connected to anacoustic warning device constituted for example by the vehicle klaxon itself, additional horns or an electric siren.
As to the connection of the hydraulic part of the device in question, a distinction must be made between truck full trailers and motor vehicles.
In the case of truck full trailers, the non-return valves may be respectively connected either to the parking brakes, the power steering and the clutch, or to the Diesel fuel feeding circuit, the brakes and the clutch. In some cases it is possible to arrange a connection to the Diesel fuel feeding circuit, the brakes and the cab-tilting device, as the latter is hydraulically operated.
In the case of motor vehicles, if they are provided with a power steering, the hydraulic connection may be arranged in the same way as for truck full trailers, that is the antitheft device can be associated to the brake circuit, the power steering and the clutch. If no power-steering is provided, the antitheft device can act upon the front and rear brake separatelv and on the clutch when the latter is of the hydraulic type, otherwise on the fuel feeding circuit; it is also possible to provide a connection to the four brakes on a single circuit, to the clutch if it is hydraulic, and to the fuel feeding circuit.
After the above description given from a structural point of view, the operation of the device according to the present invention appears very simple.
When key 6 is introduced into cylinder 5 and therefore the antitheft device is released so that the free running of the vehicle is allowed, latch 7 is shifted rightwards with reference to the drawing. In so doing, balls 28,29 and 30 are moved apart from holes 37,38 and 39 respectively, so that the working fluid can freely flow at the inside of the different hydraulic systems.
Likewise, contacts 51 and 53 close the electric engine feeding circuits while contacts 46 and 48 are opened so that the acoustic warning device is kept disconnected. In this way the vehicle is caused to start by simply introducing the engine ignition key into its respective lock.
On the contrary, when the vehicle is stopped, after switching off the engine by means of the above mentioned key, key 6 is caused to turn into cylinder 5 in the opposite direction. In this way latch 7 is shifted leftwards referring to the drawing.
As a consequence of that, on the one side, balls 28, 29 and 30 pushed by springs 31,32 and 33, close holes 37,38 and 39 of the corresponding non-return valves, so that the one-direction locking of the respective hydraulic circuits occur. For example, in the case of a brake circuit, if the driver pushes down on the foot-brake pedal, brake oil can flow to the brakes causing the circuit to be under pressure; but, as soon as the pedal is released, owing to the fact that the working fluid cannot flow back being holes 37,38 and 39 closed, said brakes become locked.
On the other side, latch 7 bears against pushbutton 40 so that contacts 46 and 48 connected to the electricwarning circuit are closed being at the same time opened contacts 51 and 53 connected to the electric engine feeding circuit. Therefore, if a burglar does not disconnect the above described antitheft device and tries to causes the vehicle to move just the same using a key similar two that proper to the vehicle itself, the warning circuit is caused to trip, while the electric engine feeding circuit cannot be closed. Should a burglar succeed in tampering with the electric part of the antitheft device of the invention, the hydraulic systems would still remain locked. As they control the essential operating members of a vehicle such as the brakes, the clutch and the power steering, they make the removal of the same vehicle practically impossible.
Obviously, various modifications and variations may be made to the above described device without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
In particular, the bar can bear only two control rods which cause the operation of two hydraulic circuits only.
