Cans and cylindrical articles, washing and cleaning. - A machine in which the cans are brushed internally and externally while immersed in cleaning fluid which is heated and circulated by a steam injector comprises a tank 2 on which is mounted an intermittently rotating can carrier consisting of discs 4 mounted on a shaft 5 rotated intermittently by a geneva motion from a shaft 10 driven constantly by gearing from a motor 21. The can grippers consist of jaws 25, 26 the jaws 25 being fixed to the discs 4 while the jaws 26 are fixed to oscillating shafts 27 and provided with arms 28 carrying rollers 29 adapted to be engaged by an arm 30 mounted on a shaft 31 which also carries an arm 32 having a roller 33 held by a spring 37 against a cam 34 mounted on the shaft 10. The jaws are held against the cans by springs 35 acting between the discs 4 and arms 36 secured to the shafts 27 and the cam 34 is arranged so that the cans 66 may be fed in at the top and are then gripped until they are positioned over external brushes 65, 67. At this point internal rotary brushes 41, 42 fixed to a hollow shaft 43 passing through a gland 44 in the tank, are advanced by a spring-controlled lever 48 acted on by a cam 58 rotated by gearing from the shaft 10, so as to enter the can. The shaft 43 carries a pulley 45 driven by a belt 46 from a pulley 47 mounted on a driven shaft 20, and the lever 48 is pivoted at one end to a bracket 54 rotatably mounted between collars 55, 56 on the shaft, a.nd at the other end to the framing 50 of the machine. The free end of the shaft extends through a gland 62 into a cleansing liquid supply tank 63 and receives the nozzle 64 of a steam pipe 65 so that liquid is forced into the can and circulated, returning by a pipe 76. When the inside of the can has been cleaned the grippers are released by the cam 34 so that the can is rotated by the internal brushes and the outside cleaned, then the can is gripped again and the internal brushes retracted, after which the geneva motion comes into action to rotate the bottle carrier another step. The geneva wheel 6 has radial slots adapted to be engaged by a roller 8 carried by a cam disc 9 mounted on the shaft 10 so that the wheel is moved through a portion of a revolution, and is held fixed during the cleansing periods by a roller 38 engaging one of the radial slots, this roller being carried by a lever acted on by the cam 9.
