Abstract
214,368. Marsh, G. A., and Richards, G. W. Feb. 6, 1923. Balls.-A ball for tennis and like games comprises a core or centre, and an outer cover of crepe rubber. The core is preferably gas or air filled and is covered primarily with a film of rubber solution. By regulating the thickness of the film and loading it with zinc oxide, the resiliency and weight of the ball may be varied. Over the film two complementary figure 8-shaped pieces of crepe rubber are stretched and pressed. More than one layer of crepe rubber may be employed and the cover vulcanized by the Peachey or other process. The pieces of crepe rubber are preferably smoothed on one side by warming before application to the core. The cover may be coloured or loaded by compounding it with zinc oxide, china clay, &c. In a modification, the film of solution is dispensed with and the cover applied directly to the core. Specification 130.578 is referred to.
