Abstract
An adhesive tape dispensing aid to be loosely located on a roll of adhesive tape and having one or two legs which engage over the tape and into the middle of the roll 70, the aid having a first ledge 10 to be adjacent the outer surface of the roll and generally parallel to the roll axis and a second ledge 20 parallel to, but spaced outwardly from, the first ledge, so that, in use, the end of the adhesive tape can adhere to the second ledge and can easily be engaged in the region between the ledges. Several embodiments are disclosed covering various shape combinations of the legs, under the general description above. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Adhesive tape dispensing aid
This invention relates to an adhesive tape dispensing aid.
Adhesive tape is supplied in rolls and usually used intermittently. It is often difficult to grip the end of the tape because it is adhered to the roll. Certain dispending devices are known which both hold the roll of tape and have a ledge on which the free end of the tape can be adhered. There is then a stretch of tape between the roll and the ledge by which the tape can conveniently be gripped.
Such dispensers work quite well but they are rather bulky and they involve the consumer in some expense.
The aim of this invention is to provide an adhesive tape dispensing aid which makes it easy to engage the tape for the purpose of the drawing tape from a roll.
According to the present invention there is provided an adhesive tape dispensing aid which has one or two legs which can engage over the tape on a roll and into the middle of the roll so as to locate the aid loosely on the roll, the aid having a first ledge to be adjacent the surface of the roll and generally parallel to the roll axis, and a second ledge generally parallel to, but spaced outwardly from, the first ledge, so that in use the end of the adhesive tape can adhere to the second ledge and can easily be engaged at the region between the ledges.
Preferably the outer edge of the second ledge is serrated so that the adhesive tape can be severed thereby.
The invention will be more clearly understood from the following description which is given by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which
Figures 1 to 6, 8 and 10 to 13 are plan views of embodiments of adhesive tape dispensing aid according to the invention,
Figure 7 is a perspective view of one embodiment of aid in use in connection with a roll of adhesive tape;
Figures 9A and 9B are a perspective and an "in use" view of another embodiment and
Figure 14 is a side view of an aid of the type shown in Fig. 12 abd 1 3 in use.
In each of the Figures there is shown an adhesive tape dispensing aid having an arrangement of one or two legs which can engage a roll of adhesive tape and which has a space 1 through which the roll can then pass. In each embodiment there is a first ledge 10 which will be adjacent the surface of the roll and a second ledge 20 which will be spaced from the surface of the roll and between these ledges there is a gap 2 which in use is bridged by tape from the roll. The edge of the ledge 20 remote from the roll is in each case serrated but a simply sharpened edge could suffice.
Fig. 7 shows the assembly of such an aid with the roll 70 of adhesive tape. A part 72 of the tape bridges the gap between the ledges 10 and 20 and its free end is adhered to the face of the outer ledge 20. It will be seen that the tape passes through the gap in the sense that a non-adhesive side of the tape contacts the ledge 10 while the adhesive side contacts the ledge 20. In use, the user can easily engage the tape in the region 72 and lift it from the ledge 20. As tape is unrolled from the roll it passes out through the gap between the ledges 10 and 20 without difficulty because the non-adhesive side contacts the ledge 10. The roll, of course, is rotated and the aid thus rotates relative to the roll but that is no inconvenience because it is a loose fit thereon. When enough tape has been drawn off the adhesive side is adhered again to the ledge 20 and the tape is torn with the aid of the serrated edge thereon.
In the embodiment of Fig. 1, legs 11 and 1 2 depend from the ledge 11 with the leg 12 having a turned in portion to pass through the hole in the roll of tape. There is a gap in the end of leg 11 and the end of part 13. Using this gap the aid can be mounted on the roll.
The embodiment of Fig. 2 is similar except that here there are legs 21 and 22 each of which has a turned in projection, these projections terminating adjacent each other and again allowing the aid to be mounted on the roll. In Fig. 3 there is only one leg 31, this has a first extension 32 which will extend through the roll and a second extension 33 which will extend up the other side of the roll from the leg 31 thus allowing the aid to be retained in place. In the Fig. 4 embodiment there is a single leg 41 depending from the remainder of the aid this having an extension 42 to pass through the roll terminating in an end part 43 of sufficient width generally to secure the aid on the roil. The embodiment of
Fig. 5 is similar to those of Figs. 1 to 3 except that in this case the gap between the parts which define the space 1 is to one side, between the parts 51 and 54, the latter being attached to a part 53 to extend through the roll, this being integral with a leg 52. In the embodiment of Fig. 6 there is a leg 60 having a spring member 61 extending transversely thereto with a member 62 at the end of the spring to engage the other side of the roll.
The use of a spring may be advantageous in allowing the aid to be mounted on rolls of different width.
The modified aid shown in Fig. 8 is in two parts, the parts having slidably connectable portions respectively having a tongue and a slot which when engaged form the ledge 20.
When assembled, this embodiment, which is adjustable to suit the width of the tape, is similar to that of Fig. 2.
Fig. 9A shows a perspective view of another embodiment, this having opposed legs 91, 92 depending from the first ledge 10 and also extending to be attached to opposite ends of the ledge 20. A further ledge 90 extends between the legs 91, 92 below ledge 20. Fig. 9B shows this embodiment in use, with the further ledge 90 resting on the roll surface so as to assist cutting the tape.
Figs. 10 and 11 (in which plan and edge views are shown) exemplify the use of an optional feature applicable to all embodiments namely a slot 100 in the first ledge 10 through which the tape is threaded. This more securely locates the aid, giving it greater directional stability. The embodiment of Fig. 11 is not planar; it has a central transverse step to facilitate passage of tape through the slot.
Figures 12 and 13 illustrate two embodiments having another optional feature which again is applicable to all embodiments namely a tongue 1 20 extending inwards towards the roll surface from the first ledge 10. The tongue is flexible and presses on the roll surface. When tape is being pulled off the roll the tongue tends to push the aid, in particular the second ledge 20, towards the roll. This stops the second ledge 20 from contacting the adhesive side of the tape and thus interfering with its running off the reel through the aid. This form of aid is shown in use in Fig.
14, where tape 1 21 is being drawn off a roll 1 22. Regardless of the amount off the roll, the tongue will tend to keep the aid in the correct position, throughout the life of the roll.
It will be appreciated that all embodiments save that of Fig. 9 are essentially flat, in most cases entirely flat. That of Fig. 11 can be described as essentially flat as it only departs from that state by reason of its step. Many other embodiments can be envisaged, which can also be described as essentially flat. Thus an embodiment cut from a sheet of material would be essentially flat, and would be so regarded even if it were bent in manufacture to have two parts at an angle to one another.
Thus, it is of particular importance that most aids according to the invention can be rapidly formed from sheet material in few, perhaps only one, operation.
It will be appreciated that in each embodiment some flexing of the aid is needed in order to mount it on a roll. It is envisaged that the aid will be made of plastics material, for instance, nylon, which while allowing such flexibility, will also be reasonably tough, particularly at the region of the outer ledge 20 which may be used for the purpose of severing the tape.
