Description

SPECIFICATION Dispenser of web from a roll of web According to the present invention, there is provided dispenser means suitable for dispensing web from a roll of web (e.g. rolled tape whose inner or outer surface has pressure-sensitive adhesive), said dispenser means comprising: (a) at least one support means for supporting an end of web obtained from the exterior of said roll (e.g. the supported end can adhere to, be tucked over said at least one support means, or be gripped by at least one said support means particularly if the tape were nort adhesive tape), and at least one of the following features (b) and (c):: (b) at least one guide means spaced apart from said at least one support means such that when said at least one support means supports said web free end, a bridging portion of web will extend between said at least one support means and said at least one guide means, said bridging portion being liftable to enable said web end to be released from said at least one support means and preferably from said at least one guide means (e.g. by a man's finger or suitable apparatus, e.g. when the dispenser means is part of a machine, for instance a dispenser of labels, postage stamps, or paper for printing or photocopying), the web when having an adhesive inner surface can adhere to at least one said guide means so as to enable tensioning of said bridging portion; and (c) at least one abutment means for abutting the exterior of said roll, the web when having an adhesive outer surface can adhere to at least one said abutment means so as to enable tensioning of a portion of web that will extend to said support means.
The dispenser means can be embodied for any application to which it is suitable. In one preferred embodiment, the dispenser means is adapted for dispensing web from an annular roll formed in any way, e.g. the inner circumference can be an annulus on which the roll was formed. Preferably, the inner surface of the rolled web has a coating pressure-sensitive adhesive, thereby enabling the supported free end web to adhere releasably to said support means. The web itself can be made of any suitable material, e.g. cloth, paper, plastics.
The dispenser means can further comprise: (d) at least one flank which abuts or is spaced from a side of the roll. Preferably, there are first and second said flanks spaced apart with therebetween said at least one support means and said at least one guide means. These flanks can constitute portion of a saddle dispenser for being seated on the roll.
At least one said support means can project from or to a said flank, e.g. opposite first and second ends of a said support means can project respectively from or to said first and second flanks. Any said support means can be integral with at least one said flank, e.g. when a metal moulding or polymeric moulding constitutes at least one said suppport means and at least one said flank. Any said support means can be permanently or releasably mounted to at least one said flank, e.g. when a said support means has an end permanently or releasably fastened to a said flank. This fastening can comprise at least one fastener means, e.g. a said support means can domprise an end thereof that will receive a screw passed through a said flank. That end can abut a said flank and/or include a spigot for entering corresponding recess means (e.g. a blind or through hole) in the flank.A further example of fastener means is suitable adhesive. At least a portion of at least one said support means can be non-rotatable relative to the web, e.g. a said support means can be a non-rotatable post. At least a portion of at least one said support means can be rotatable, e.g. be a roller, rotatable sleeve, or rotatable annulas, for instance be a driven component for feeding web forwards.
At least one said guide means can project from or to a said flank, e.g. opposite first and second ends of a said guide means can project respectively from or to said first and second flanks. Any said guide means can be integral with at least one said flank, e.g. when a metal moulding or polymeric moulding constitutes at least one said guide means (and optionally at least one said support means) and at least one said flank. Any said guide means can be permanently or releasably mounted to at least one said flank, e.g. when a said guide means has an end permanently or releasably fastened to said flank. This fastening can comprise at least one fastener means, e.g. a said guide means can comprise an end thereof that will receive a screw passed through a said flank. That end portion can abut a said flank and/or include a spigot for entering correaponding recess means (e.g.
a blind or through hole) in the flank. A further example of fastener means is suitable adhesive. At least a portion of at least one said guide means can be non-rotatable relative to the web, e.g. a said guide means can be a non-rotatable post. At least a portion of at least one said guide means can be rotatable, e.g. be a roller or rotatable sleeve or annulus.
Pressure of said at least one abutment means against the exterior of the roll can resist uncontrolled unwinding of the roll when the web is lifted from said at least one support means and from said at leat one guide means.
Depending on that pressure, braking force can be applied to the exterior of the roll, so as to enable the user to control the rate at which the roll un-winds. At least one said abutment means can project from or to a said flank, e.g.
opposite first and second ends of a said abutment means can project respectively from or to said first and second flanks. Any said abutment means can be integral with at least one said flank. e.g. when a metal moulding or polymeric moulding constitutes at least one said abutment means (and optionally at least one said support means, and optionally at least one said guide means) and at least one said flank. Any said abutment means can be permanently or releasably mounted to at least one said flank, e.g. when a said abutment means has an end permanently or releasably fastened to a said flank. This fastening can comprise at least one fastener means, e.g. a said abutment means can comprise an end thereof that will receive a screw passed through a said flank. That end can abut a said flank and/or include a spigot for entering corresponding recess means (e.g. a blind or through hole) in the flank. A further example of fastener means is suitable adhesive. At least a portion of at least one said abutment means can be non-rotatable relative to the web, e.g. a said abutment means can be a non-rotatable post. At least a portion of at least one said abutment means can be rotatable relative to the web, e.g. be a roller, or rotatable sleeve, or rotatable annulus, for instance be a driven component for feeding web forwards.
When the roll is annular, an embodiment of the dispenser of the present invention can further comprise: (e) at least one locator means for engaging the inner circumference of the roll so as to locate the dispenser means on the roll and enable the dispenser means to be moved circumferentially of the roll. At least one said locator means can be adapted so that the dispenser means can be rocked or otherwise moved to engage said outer circumference with at least one said abutment means or disengage therefrom at least one said abutment means. At least one said locator means can be removable to enable the dispenser means to be mounted on the roll. However, the mounting could be enabled by temporary removal of at least one said flank. At least one said locator means can project from or to a said flank, e.g. opposite first and second ends of a said locator means can project respectively from or to said first and second flanks.
It should be noted that the roll could be formed be threading of web a plurality of times through the dispenser, but preferably the roll is preformed. Thus, any said locator means can be integral with at least one said flank, e.g. when a metal moulding or polymeric moulding constitutes at least one said locator means (and optionally at least one said support means, optionally at least one said guide means, and optionally at least one said abutment means) and at least one said flank.
Any said locator means can be permanently or releasably mounted to at least one said flank, e.g. when a said abutment means or said guide means, or a said support means has an end permanently or releasably fastened to a said flank. This fastening can comprise at least one fastener means, e.g. a said locator means can comprise an end thereof that will receive a screw passed through a said flank.
That end can abut a said flank and/or include a spigot for entering corresponding recess means (e.g. a blind or through hole) in the flank. A further example of fastener means is suitable adhesive. At least a portion of at least one said locator means can be non-rotatable relative to the inner circumference of the roll, e.g. a said locator means can be a nonrotatable post. At least a portion of at least one said locator means can be rotatable relative to said inner circumference, e.g. be a roller, of rotatable sleeve, or rotatable annulus, for instance be a driven roller component for rotating the roll.
The dispenser means can further comprise: (f) at least one shearer means for shearing off a dispensed portion of web. Any shearer means can be provided in any suitable way.
In one embodiment, a shearer means is integral with at least one said support means.
However, any shearer means can be permanently or releasably fastened to e.g. at least one said support means by using at least one fastener means that could be integral or nonintegral with at least one said shearer means or with at least one said support means, e.g.
at least one screw and/or suitable adhesive and/or passage. Conveniently, a shearer means comprises a continuous or discontinuous edge, e.g. an edge that is a knife edge that comprises a row of teeth for piercing the web. Any shearer edge can have any suitable configuration and be provided in any suitable way.
It will be appreciated that the dispenser means provides a constraining path for the web to be dispensed, that path being bounded by said at least one abutment means (when present); said at least one guide means (when present); and said at least one support means. This path can have any suitable configuration. The path can have at least two turning portions defined by fulcra respectively constituted by a said abutment means and a said guide means. It is not essential for the web to have any adhesive surface.
In the accompanying drawings is shown by way of example one hand holdable dispenser according to the present invention, wherein: Figure 1 shows the dispenser in a dismantled state for receiving an annular roll of pressure-sensitive adhesive tape; Figure 2 shows a web of tape being dispensed from the dispenser; and Figure 3 shows the assembled dispenser mounted on the core of said roll when nearly all of the tape has been unwound.
In Fig. 1, there project upwards from a dispenser flank 1: a support post 2; a guide post 3; an abutment post 4; and a locator post 5. These are non-rotatable relative to flank 1 but any said post could be rotatable relative to flank 1. The outer and inner circumferences of a roll 6 of tape having pressure-sensitive adhesive on the inner surface of the tape are located between support post 2, abutment post 4, and locator post 5. A dispenser flank 7 is then releasably seated onto the tops of posts 2, 3, 4, 5 and fastened to them by screws 8. The flank 1 is releasably seated on the bottoms of those posts and fastened to them by further screws (not shown). It should be noted that flank 1 and/ or flank 7 could be integral with those posts, as described earlier above. The end portion of tape from the outer circumference of the roll is led via predetermined path w (Fig. 2) under abutment post 4, upwards and over guide post 3, and then to bridge the gap between guide post 3 and support post 2, with part of the end portion of the tape releasably adhering to the top of support post 2 and the top of guide post 3 by means of the pressure-sensitive adhesive, so as to enable tensioning of the bridging web portion. A finger can be inserted under the bridging portion of tape so as to lift that portion and enable the lifted portion to be pulled and thereby unwind tape from the roll. Uncontrolled unwinding of tape is prevented by the operator rocking the dispenser so that abutment post 4 presses against the outer circumference of the roll.
When a required length of tape has been pulled from the dispenser, that length can be sheared off by pressing the length of tape against teeth of a cutter 9 mounted to the front of the support post 2 by screws 10.
The tape is transparent but this is not essential, because the tape could have any appearance provided that the tape is suitable for use with the dispenser shown.
The dispenser shown can be modified, as will be appreciated from the above description given before the first reference to the accompanying drawings. A hand holdable dispenser of the present invention could be embodied as a dispenser non-detachable from the roll, or detachable from the roll, e.g. for transference to another roll. Both of these applications could be used to promote sales of e.g. pressure-sensitive adhesive tape.
