Abstract

A paint guard (10) comprises a dished plate (11) of rectangular planform having a handle (15) on the upper raised surface thereof and whose straight, bevelled edges (12, 13, 14) lie in a common plane. A depending rib (16) is provided on the underside of the guard (10) to maintain the edges (12, 13, 14) clear of but adjacent a surface on which the guard (10) is placed and to which it is held by suction device (19, 20). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Paint guard This invention relates to a paint guard and in particular to a guard for use in painting window frames, doors and the like adjacent a window or other panel to which paint is not to be applied.
The invention provides a paint guard comprising a plate member having at least one substantially straight edge and secured to said plate member at a location spaced from said edge, at least one attachment means operable to attach said guard to a surface with said straight edge adjacent and extending substantially parallel with said surface.
The plate member may have two substantially straight edges disposed substantially perpendicular to each other, said attachment means being spaced from said edges and operable to attach said guard to a surface with said edges adjacent and extending substantially parallel with said surface.
The plate member may have a third substantially straight edge disposed spaced from and extending parallel with said second edge, said three edges lying substantially in a common plane.
The guard may comprise two attachment means, each secured to said plate member at a location spaced from said edge or edges.
The attachment means may comprise suction means.
The guard may also comprise handle means disposed at that side of said plate member remote from said attachment means.
The invention will now be further described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a first embodiment, Figure 2 is a plan view of the embodiment of Fig. 1, Figure 3 is a section on A-A of Fig. 2, Figure 4 is a section on B-B of Fig. 2, and Figure 5 is a plan view of a second embodiment.
Referring now to Figs. 1 to 4 there is shown a paint guard 10 comprising a dished plate member 11 of generally rectangular planform providing three straight edges, 12, 1 3,14, which !ie in a common plane. The upper surface of plate member 11 is bevelled at the edges 12,13,14 so as to provide a chisel-edge at those edges. The upper, central part of the plate member 11 is provided with a handle 1 5 extending parallel with edge 1 2.
At the underside of plate member 11 there is provided a depending rib 1 6 extending spaced from and parallel with the edges 12, 13 and 14. The height of rib 16 is such that when the free edge 1 7 thereof is placed in contact with a plane surface, for example a window, the edges 12, 1 3 and 14 lie spaced from and parallel with such surface by a small predetermined amount 1 8 (see Fig. 4).
Also depending from plate member 11 are two spigots 1 9 on each of which is mounted a suction device 20. When the guard 10 is not in use the suction devices 20 extend below the plane of the free edges 1 7 of rib 16 so that they may be brought into contact with the aforementioned plane surface of a window or the like. The suction devices 20 are, as is conventional, of a resilient material and of cup-shaped configuration so that they can be deformed and secure the guard 10 in contact with the window or like surface, such contact being through edges 1 7 and suction devices 20.
The guard 21 of Fig. 5 is generally similar in construction to guard 10 described above.
In the case of guard 21 however the length of edge 1 2 is considerably greater than that of edges 1 3 and 15, In consequence the plate member 11 comprises a generally planar central part 22 with the handle 5 provided centrally thereof, and an edge region 23 downwardly inclined relative to central part 22 and terminating in the edges 12, 1 3 and 14.
In use, the guard 10 or 21 may be placed in contact with a window or the like plane surface which is not to be painted with an edge 12 or edges 12, 1 3 and/or 14 adjacent a window frame, door framework or the like which is to be painted. The suction devices 20, which may be moistened to facilitate securing the guard 10, 21 in contact with the surface remains in the position in which it is placed, leaving the hands of the painter free to hold brushes, paint tins or the like. Painting of the window frame or the like may be readily performed by unskilled painters without paint being applied to the window or other shielded area. The guard 10, 21 is preferably of a plastics material which may be easily cleaned after use. Furthermore the guard 10, 21 may be readily moulded and therefore be inexpensive to produce. Since edges 12, 13, 14 are spaced by a small predetermined amount from the window or like surface, the tendency for paint to flow under the edges 12, 1 3 14 and onto that surface is prevented or at least substantially reduced in comparison with the use of flat shields placed in contact with the surface.
Conveniently the guard 10, 21 may slide to a new position by being pushed by hand when required, or may simply be pulled from the surface and placed in a new position.
1. A paint guard comprising a plate number having at least one substantially straight edge and, secured to said plate member at a location spaced from said edge, at least one attachment means operable to attach said guard to a surface with said straight edge adjacent and extending substantially parallel
