Abstract
Formwork for supporting an arched head over a window or door opening in a wall of a building comprises a hollow member at least partially filled with a foamed synthetic resin material, and having an arched upper surface forming a support for bricks or blocks. The hollow member may be vacuum formed thermoplastic resin or a glass fibre reinforced resin. The filler may be polystyrene. GB Application 2 117 811 A is referred to.
Description
SPECIFICATION
Improvements in or relating to formwork
This invention relates to formwork for supporting an arched head over a window or door opening in a wall of a building, and it is an object of the invention to provide an improvement in, or a modification of, the invention forming the subject matter of Patent Application No. 83 04983.
In the said Application there is claimed a formwork for supporting an arched head over a window or door opening in a wall of a building, said formwork including a front horizontal portion spanning said opening; a front vertical portion upstanding from said front horizontal portion and having an arcuate upper edge; a rear vertical portion having a straight lower edge coplanar with said front horizontal portion; and an arched upper portion connecting the arcuate upper edge of the front vertical portion to the rear vertical portion and forming a support for a course of bricks, blocks, or the like, forming said arched head.
The present invention consists in a formwork for supporting an arched head over a window or door opening in a wall of a building, said formwork comprising a hollow member spanning said opening, wherein said hollow member includes a front vertical portion having an arcuate upper edge, a rear vertical portion, and an arched upper portion connecting the arcuate upper edge of the front vertical portion to the rear vertical portion and forming a support for a course of bricks, blocks, or the like forming said arched head, wherein said hollow member is at least partially filled with a foamed synthetic resin material.
It is to be understood that the hollow member may be similar to any of the embodiments described in the said Application No. 83 04983. Thus, formwork in accordance with the present invention may be substantially the same as formwork in accordance with the invention of the said Application No. 83 04983, except that the hollow member is at least partially filled with a foamed synthetic resin material.
It has been found that by filling the hollow member with foamed material it is possible to reduce the thickness of the maerial from which the hollow member is made. Furthermore, formwork in accordance with the present invention may have more rigidity and stability than formwork without the foamed material filling, and in addition will have better thermal qualities.
The hollow member may be made of glass reinforced synthetic resin material but it is preferred that it should be made of a weatherresistant thermoplastic synthetic resin material. In the latter case the hollow member is preferably produced from a sheet of the material by vacuum forming.
Particularly when the hollow member is made by vacuum forming, it has been found desirable to use a relatively thin sheet material, and accordingly the foamed filling is particularly useful in the case of formwork in which the hollow member is made in this way.
The foamed material used for filling the hollow member may be, for example, polystyrene. In this case the material will normaliy be inserted in the hollow member in the form of a solid block, or blocks, shaped to the required dimensions. Alternatively the filling material may be polyurethane, in which case it is preferably injected into the hollow member and foamed in situ.
1. A formwork for supporting an arched head over a window or door opening in a wall of a building, said formwork comprising a hollow member spanning said opening, wherein said hollow member includes a front vertical portion having an arcuate upper edge, a rear vertical portion, and an arched upper portion connecting the arcuate upper edge of the front vertical portion to the rear vertical portion and forming a support for a course of bricks, blocks, or the like forming said arched head, wherein said hollow member is at least partially filled with a foamed synthetic resin material.
2. A formwork as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the hollow member is made of glass fibre reinforced synthetic resin material.
3. A formwork as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the hollow member is made of a weather-resistant thermoplastic synthetic resin material.
4. A formwork as claimed in Claim 3, wherein the hollow member is produced from a sheet of said synthetic resin material by vacuum forming.
5. A formwork as claimed in any of the preceding Claims, wherein the foamed material is polystyrene.
6. A formwork as claimed in Claim 5, wherein the polystyrene is inserted in the hollow member in the form of a solid block or blocks.
7. A formwork as claimed in any of Claims
1-4, wherein the foamed material is polyurethane.
8. A formwork as claimed in Claim 7, wherein the polyurethane is injected into the hollow member and foamed in situ.
9. A formwork substantially as hereinbefore described.
10. Any features of novelty, taken singly or in combination, of the formwork hereinbefore described.
