Abstract
The manufacture of thermally insulated panels requires a profile by which panes of glass are assembled and manufactured in a sealed manner. In order to avoid the sealant (P) soiling the internal surfaces of such panels (V1, V2) a profile (1) is presented which employs a flexible tongue (1f) to restrict the flow of sealant such that it may only be discharged along the external web 1a, beyond the rib (1g). The profile may bear a lower extension (1d). <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Profile for the manufacture of panels especially transparent or translucent panels, and the panels produced of this profile
The invention relates to a profile for manufacturing panels and the panels manufactured by means of this method.
In the manufacture of thermally insulated panels, one or generally two panels of glass or a similar transparent or translucent material, are assembled and manufactured in a sealed manner within the sides of a frame consisting of profiled elements which are suitably mitre-cut at the ends to facilitate joining.
French Patent No. 690097 discloses, for the manufacture of the frame elements of panels, a profile which may be extruded from a plastic material. This profile includes a U-shaped external profiled part, integral with our internal profiled part which is of a hollow T-shape, and arises from the base of the U.
The inside of the U-shaped portion is fitted with a suitable anchoring and sealing material, hereafter referred to as the sealant, of any well known and convenient type. The edge of a pane of glass, or similar plate, is then introduced within the profile.
The interest of the characteristics of the profiles, and panels manufactured by means of this method has been confirmed by working of the same. However, due to the extrusion of sealant on introduction of the point or plate into the profile, soiling of the panes by said sealant may occur. This presents a problem when sealant is extruded from the profile within a panel made of two or more panes, removal of the excess sealant from internal surfaces is difficult. Futhermore the lack of strength and tightness, both of the panels and their mountings has previously disqualified them from certain applications.
In accordance with a first aspect of the invention there is provided a profile for manufacturing panels, which includes an external U-shaped or similarly shaped profiled part and an internal profiled part, solid with the base of the U, said profile being characterized in that a flexible tongue is formed at one or both sides of the internal profiled part, said tongue being directed towards the base of the external U-shaped profiled part.
The tongue may be on the lower corner of a
T-shaped internal part, and may have a space or cavity beneath it. The tongue is located such that it retains the sealant when a pane of glass or similar material is engaged within the profile. The excess sealant cannot then run-up the pane and smudge the inner surface of the glass. The tongue may be extruded at the same time as the profile, and may be of a triangular section, the apex being at the end directed downwards, the upper side of the tongue extending from the apex to the lower corner of the substantially T-shaped internal profiled part, the lower side of the tongue extending from the apex to a point of the lower surface of the T-shaped profiled part.
In accordance with a second aspect of the invention, there is provided a profile for manufacturing panels, which includes an external U-shaped or similarly shaped profiled part and an internal profiled part, integral with the base of the U, said profile being characterized in that a profiled projecting rib is formed on the inside and along the whole length of the upper edge of each web of the external U-shaped profiled part, the web being a profiled projection with a double slant.
In accordance with a third aspect of the invention, there is provided a profile for manufacturing panels, which includes an external U-shaped or similarly shaped profiled part and an internal profiled part, integral with the base of the U, said profile being characterized by an extension arising from the lower surface of the U-shaped external profiled part along the length thereof, having a squared form, the web of this squared extension, which is normal to the base of the U being formed with a recessed offsetting relative to the web of the U located on the same side.
A fourth aspect of the invention consists in a metal block, which is substituted for sealing and bonding product adjacent to the ends of the internal profiled part. This has been found advantageous in the manufacture of a panel which has improved strength and water-vapour brightness at the mitred joints.
To make the invention better understood without intending to restrict its embodiment, reference is made to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a form of embodiment of the profile in accordance with the invention, for double glass work;
Figure 2 is a sectional view in part illustrating the filling up of the profile with the sealant;
Figure 3 is a similar view to Figure 2 showing the placing of a pane of glass within the profile prepared in accordance with the invention;
Figure 4 is a sectional view of the profile placed on a seat or opening;
Figure 5 is a perspective view illustrating a form of embodiment of the profile in accordance with the invention for single glass work;
Figure 6 is a sectional view of the profile of Figure 5 secured on a seat or opening support and provided with its pane of glass;;
Figure 7 is a perspective view illustrating the double glass work profile prepared for a mitre assembly; and
Figure 8 is a sectional view showing two profiles in accordance with Figure 7 which are assembled at a mitre and provided with an angle filling and sealing means.
The profile 1 in accordance with the invention, illustrated in Figure 1 includes a generally U-shaped external profiled part la and an internal T-shaped profiled part 1b which is integral with the external profiled part and has a hollow section 1c.
The external profiled part la may receive a squared lateral extension, directed towards the inside part 1d which is formed recessed relative to the web of the external profiled part, and an inside rib le located approximately in alignment with the end of the squared part. These additional arrangements are used in a well-known manner to facilitate the anchoring and the fastening of the profile on a
support or casing 2 as illustrated in Figure 4.
In accordance with the invention the T-shaped pro
filed part has in the lower angles (a) of the upper
portion of the T, flexible tongues If which are
oriented obliquely toward the bottom ofthe external
U-shaped profiled part. These tongues have an elongated triangular section, with an upper lateral side connected to the angle a and a lower lateral side connected underneath the lower face of the T. Furth ermore, projections lg oftriangular section, for instance constituting a longitudinal ridge are formed at the upper end of the webs of the U-shaped profiled part la and disposed inwardly.
As may be seen from Figures 2, 3 and 4 in succession, the installation of the panes of glass V1-V2 is effected as follows: the sealant P is applied within the two cavities formed between the webs of the U and the T-shaped profiled section (Figure 2), in a quantity determined by the thickness of the panes.
When the panes are introduced between the flexible tongues 1f and the projections lg, the sealant (P) spreads to either side of the pane and fills the cavity
C, any excess is now prevented from passing the flexible tongues lf, which have flexed under the pressure of the pane, and is forced to discharge along with the other portion rising along the web of the U up to the projection 1g.
If this excess is more than sufficient to fill the space between the pane and the web of the U, then it may be discharged above the projection 19, on account of the slanting shape of the projection and of the elasticity of the webs, as illustrated by the dotted lines in Figures 3.
The excess sealant may be removed easily. The flexible tongues If have ensured that none of this sealant is discharged between the two panes.
It is thus possible to have a strong, clean and rational double glasswork, at an interesting cost by reason of the simplified mounting and of the use of a profile usually made of one piece extruded plastics.
There has been illustrated in Figures 5 and 6 a profile 3 to be used for a simple glass work. In this case, the external U-shaped profiled part 3a has two webs provided with an inside upper projection Sb.
The pane of glass V3 is positioned as described previously and the sealant pushed back by the pane spreads upwards to the projections 3b where excess may be discharged. An external squared profiled part 3d is also included in the profile.
As disclosed in a prior application the four profiles which make up the frame are mitre cut at their ends (Figure 7) atthe level of the U-shaped external profile, and, as the case may be, at the level of the squared profiled extension, while the polygonal or
T-shaped profiled part is cut normal to the profile while the upper ridge thereof being at the level of the upper ends of the webs of the U.
In order to maintain a mechanical strengthening and a better lightness to aqueous vapour, or the like, in the angles of the window frame, wherein is applied a sealing and bending product (such as polysulphide) which is relatively permissible to water, a metal block 4 generally a cube is substituted for the sealant and bonding product (Figure 8) The advantages are apparent from the description,
more particularly:
The many possibilities of use of panels, of the pane ofglasstype,transparenttranslucentoropa- que, coloured, ornamented, and other similar panels of glass of other substance or material.
The possibility to place between two panels medial partitions, such as laminated, grate bars and so forth.
The sealing and adhesion which is gained by complete filling of the spaces between the pane and the internal and external parts of the profile, without soiling of the panes by excess sealant.
The protection of the sealant and cement by the web of the profile and the lower extension of the
U-shaped profile, and the ease by which such a surface may be finished.
The hightness and strength in the angles of the window-frame by the application of a filling metal block.
Various modifications may be made within the scope of the invention.
