Description

SPECIFICATION Fleece rolling machine The invention relates to a machine for wrapping wool fleeces with an elongate web or wrapper into a roll to faciiitate the handling thereof.
According to the invention there is provided apparatus for rolling wool fleeces on an elongate web comprising means for supporting a supply roll of web, a roll former mounted for rotation about a horizontal axis and spaced from the support means, means for winding web, let-off from the supply roll and carrying wool fleeces thereon, onto the former, and means for withdrawing the former from within the web after the winding thereof.
The former may comprise a pair of end flanges and a core extending between the flanges, the core being divided midway between its ends and tapering from a maximum transverse periphery at its ends to a minimum transverse periphery where it is divided, and the withdrawal means may comprise screw means operative between at least one of said flanges and the adjacent core half whereby said core half may be displaced axially relative to said flange.
The winding means may comprise turning means drivingly connected to one end of the core, the two core halves being adapted to transmit drive from one to the other. The former may be supported for rotation by means adapted to release the former laterally therefrom.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, of which: Figure 1 is a plan view of the apparatus in use; Figure2 is a side elevation of the apparatus in use; Figure 3 is an end elevation on a roll former; Figure 4 is a section of lines IV-IV of Fig. 3; and Figures 5a and 5b show a drive block respectively closed and open.
In the figures an elongate web or wrapper 1 in the form of a roll 2 is mounted on a horizontal axis 3 by means of a frame 4. Spaced from the frame 4 is a winding frame 5 upon which a flat former 6 is mounted for rotation about a horizontal axis parallel to axis 3.
In use of the apparatus web 1 is let off from roll 2 to such an extent that the free end thereof having been passed round guide rollers 29, may be wrapped around the former 6, by rotating the former or otherwise, with the surface of the web which is uppermost on leaving the roll 2 being towards the axis of rotation of the former. When a sufficient number of turns have been wound on the former to secure the web firmly thereto (one only is shown for sake of simplicity) fleeces 7 are laid upon the portion of web lying between frames 4 and 5 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The web is kept taut at least in part by friction produced by rollers 29 and by conventional means (not shown) for resisting the let-off of web from roll 2.
The former 6 is then rotated slowly by means of drive unit 8 mounted on frame 5 or, in another embodiment not shown, by hand, whereby the web is drawn from'the roll 2 and the portion carrying the fleeces 7 is wrapped around the former, sandwiching the fleeces against previously enwrapped portions of the web. As the web is wrapped onto the former 6 further fleeces are laid upon the portions of web newly let off from the roll 2, and the process continues until the other end of the web 1 is released from the roll 2 and drawn to the former 6 whereafter it is secured to the remainder of the wrapper now rolled onto the former 6.
The former 6 comprises a pair of circular end flanges 10, each having an inwardly inclined edge 12 and a rectangular slot 11 extending from innerface 28 to outer face 30. The former further comprises a core 13 of rectangular transverse section extending between the opposed flanges 10. The core 13 is divided at its ends into box-like blades 14 and 15, comprising shallow trays incorporating strengthening ribs 23, 31 and 40, and a cover plate 32 (shown cut away in Fig. 4). the blades are provided respec tivelywith a square sectioned projection 16 and a corresponding square orifice 17 into which the projection 16 can slidingly fit.
Each of the blades 14, 15 whilst being of substantially constant thickness is tapered from a maximum width adjacent the flange to a minimum width at the other end. This construction gives the core as a whole a somewhat hollow centre which helps t accommodate the bulk of the fleeces intermediate the longitudinal edges of the web 1 relative to those edges when rolled on the former. However, the primary function of the taper in the blades is to facilitate the removal of the core from the wound web axially therefrom so that the former can be used with another web and the first mentioned web with its fleeces may be taken away for sale as will be more particularly described hereafter.
For the rotation of the former 6, each of the blades 14, 15 is provided at its wide end with an outward hollow projection 33 of square transverse section.
At the drive side of the former, the projection 33 is carried in an open-sided rectangular box 34 shown more particularly in Figs. 5a and 5b. Square side plate 35 of the box, opposed to the open side 39 has a boss 36 projecting from the centre thereof and the boss has a central bore 37 and a keyway 38 therein.
Ths boss 37 is of such diameter as to fit the drive shaft 9 of drive unit 8 whereby the box may be rotated about an axis perpendicular to plate 35.
End plate 40 is fixed to bottom plate 41 and end plate 42 is fixed to top plate 43, but bottom plate 41 is hingedly connected to end plate 42 so that the top and one end can be lowered about the hinge as shown in Fig. 5b when it is required to displace the projection 33 (shown in phantom lines) laterally therefrom.
The box 34 may be retained in the closed form shown in Fig. 5a, for drivingly engaging the projection 33, by means of knob 44 which screws down on rod 45 which passed through slot 46 in top plate 43.
A similar box is arranged drivingly to accommodate the projection 33 at the other end of the former.
The bore 37 does not however have a keyway and a horizontal cylindrical shaft 47 is welded at one end in to the bore and rotatably mounted in bearings 48 supported by frame 5.
When the winding of fleeces into one web is complete, the knobs 44 at each side of the former are unscrewed to release the top plates 43 which are hinged down and the former can then be removed laterally from the frame 5.
Although the core 13 is divided centrally, the frictional forces exerted on the core by the web when wrapped about it under tension is such that the blades can not readily be withdrawn laterally from the centre of the roll even though the blades are tepered inwardly.
In the construction of the former 6, each blade is introduced lengthwise through the slot 11 of one of the flanges 10. Referring particularly to blade 15 a plate 51 is then passed transversely through channel 50 defined within the blade between opposed longitudinal ribs 49, and screwed into a recess in surface 30 of flange 10 by screws 52. The plate 51 has a hole therein for the passage of a screw 21 and a nut 19 in thread engagement with screw 21 is welded to the plate 51.
One end 18 of the screw 21 passes through an opening 22 in a transverse rib 23 of the blade and is secured to the further side of the opening 22 by means of a collar 24 secured to the screw by a pin.
The screw 21 extends outwardly from the nut 19 and plate 18 and is provided at its end 26 within hollow projection 33 with a square section by means of which it may be rotated. When it is required to remove the core from the rolled web the screw 21 is turned by its squared end in such a direction relative to the hand of its thread as to draw the collar 24 towards the nut 19 whereby the web 23 and the whole of the blade is displaced axially relative to the flange 10.
The outer edges of the rolled web bear against the inner face 28 and the inclined edge 12 of the flanges 10, so that when the blade 15 is displaced axially relative to the flange 10 it is at the same time withdrawn relative to the centre of the roll of web.
Because of its taper, any outward movement results in an effective reduction in cross section and a corresponding reduction in the frictional force exerted by the web gripping the core and when the blade has been displaced sufficiently for the frictional forces to have been reduced to a level where they can be overcome manually, the blade with its flange is withdrawn completely from the roll. The blade 14 is constructed similarly to blade 15 apart from the inter-engaging portions 16,17, and the blade 14 is similarly withdrawn from the fleece roll by interaction of the blade with flange 10 by similar screw means so that the remainder of the former may be removed from within the roll.
On removal of the roll, the screws 21 are turned in the opposite direction to reinstate the relative position of the blades with the flanges, the projection 16 is engaged in the orifice 17 and the thus reassembled former is reinserted the frame 5 and the projections 33 placed on the bottom plates of the boxes 35 and the tops of the boxes swung up on their hinges so as to enclose the projections. The knobs 44 are screwed down to secure the boxes in their closed condition and the former is ready for reengagement with a further web.
