Abstract

A foldable frame 2 is provided with an outer container 3 with foldable additional containers 4 inside, fitted on books 19, so that they can be lifted out. The container 3 and lid 15 are made from waterproof synthetic material and may be provided with a lockable fastening. The handles 9 of the trolley are adjustable in height to suit the user. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A shopping trolley This invention relates to a shopping trolley, in particular it relates to a trolley which is suitable for use in towns having shopping precincts.
With the advent of parking restrictions and pedestrian precincts, purchased items have to be carried further. Most of the shopping trolleys at present available are too small to carry the whole of a family's monthly shopping, and even too small to carry the weekly shopping for a large family. If they are scaled up to do this, then they are too heavy to lift into a car.
It is the object of this invention to overcome these disadvantages.
According to this invention a shopping trolley comprises a folding mobile frame supporting one or more containers. In one embodiment of the invention the frame folds flat into a generally two dimensional shape.
In another embodiment the frame folds into a stick or generally one dimensional shape.
In yet another embodiment the frame may be adjusted to suit the height of the user and to reduce its folded size.
In a further embodiment one large outer container houses one or more smaller containers.
Preferably the containers are made in the form of bags or nets, so that they may easily be folded up.
But they may be made in box form and may independantly fold.
Also, preferably, one or more of the ontainers are made of a waterproof material and are fitted with lids.
In a further embodiment one or more of the containers are fitted with a sealing means, which may also enable them to be locked against unauthorized entry.
In yet another embodiment the frame may also provide for a child to be supported on it.
The frame is preferably constucted from steel or aliminium alloy, and one or more stays or other means may be fitted to the frame to keep it in the open position when in use.
The invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawing, which shows a shopping trolley.
The drawing shows a shopping trolley 1 comprising a frame 2, a large outer container 3 and three smaller containers 4 inside the outer container.
The frame is formed from four sets of crossing members 5, hinged at their crossing points, and each pair hinged to its neighbour, in such a way as to surround and support the container 3. Two stays 6 hold the members 5 in a set relationship one to another, when in use.
A catch 7 fits over a peg 8 when the shopping trolley is folded, and keeps it in a folded state. A similar catch is fitted on the other side.
Two of the members 5 are extended, bent over, and fitted with hand-grips 9, to form handles.
The frame is fitted with pairs of wheels 10, the axles of which pass through solid nylon plugs pressed into four of the lower ends of the members 5.
The outer container 3 is fitted to the frame by passing a loop 12, sewn to the container 3, over the hand-grip 9 and down to the hinge junction 13 between the members 5, There is a similar loop 12 on the other side of the outer container 3, which is simultaneously fitted.
Pockets 14, at the other end of the container 3, are then fitted over the tube ends 5 at the front of the trolley. The outer container 3 is made from a waterproof synthetic material and is fitted with a lid 15. The lid fits tightly over the pockets 14 when closed. It is sewn to the outer container 3 only at the sides 16, so that it can easily fold when the frame folds.
The smaller containers 4 are made of thin nylon, so that they can fold up within the outer container 3.
They have handles 17 on two sides, so that they can be lifted out. At their top corners they have eyelets 18, which can fit on hooks 19, attached to the inside of the outer container 3. This arrangement keeps the smaller containers open for filling.
In another form the pairs of wheels are fitted so that they can castor.
In a further form the members 5 connected to the hand-grips 9, are made telescopic and adjustable to suit the user. This also enables the frame to be reduced in length when folded.
And in another form, the lid is fitted with a zipper and lock so as to stop un-authorized entry.
