Description
SPECIFICATION
Improvements in or relating to fishing bait apparatus
This invention is concerned with improvements in or relating to fishing bait apparatus and is particularly concerned with bait feeding apparatus for attach menttoand use with a fishing line.
Bait feeding apparatus generally comprises a container for bait such as maggots, the container either having closed ends to retain the maggots initially in the container, or having an open end where ground bait is packed to initially hold the maggots in the container. The first type of container is known as the block end type and the second as the open end type. The apparatus includes a lead weight so as to sink to the bed of the stretch of water being fished, and the container also is provided with apertures usually in both the side wall and the end wall or walls, whereby the maggots can exit from the container when it lies on the bed. The size of the aperture can vary to control the rate of feed.
The weighted part of the apparatus is generally provided with a line attachment facility whereby the apparatus can be attached to a fishing line. As the lead weight has to be retained within the main body of the container, this has the effect that the angler either has to remove the whole apparatus from the fishing line in order to restock the container or has to restock the container when the latter is still attached to the fishing line. In match fishing in particular it is essential to save as much time as possible for actual fishing and therefore removing the line from the bait feeding apparatus and subsequently reconnecting to the fishing line can be relatively very time consuming. When the bait feeding apparatus remains attached to the line, entanglement of the line can easily occur when the angler is working with the bait feeding apparatus and the stock of bait.
Also it is necessary that the bait container be allowed to swivel relative to the fishing line to avoid entanglement. Normally this is achieved by incorporating a swivel connector between the container and the fishing line which of course adds to the cost of the apparatus.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a bait feeding apparatus which obviates or mitigates the disadvantages of the existing apparatus described above.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided bait feeding apparatus for use with a fishing line, said apparatus comprising a first part having weight means for causing the apparatus to sink when in use, the first part being adapted to contain fish bait and enable escape of the bait therefrom in a controlled fashion, and a second part having a line attachment facility independent of the first part, the first and second parts having cooperable attachment means whereby to normally remain connected together in use, the attachment means being manually releasable to enable removal of the first part from the second part and therefore from the fishing line for restocking the first part with bait.
Preferably the attachment means comprises cooperable snap fit means and the latter may comprise a peripheral projection on an external surface of one of the first and second parts and a complementary groove in an internal surface on the other of the first and second parts, whereby the first and second parts are snap fitted together.
Preferably also the second part has a line connector rotatably but non-removably fitted in an aperture formed in a wall thereof, the line connector having the line attachment facility whereby, when attached to a fishing line by means of the facility, the connected first and second parts are freely rotatable relative to the line connector and the line.
According to another aspect of the present invention there is provided bait feeding apparatus for use with a fishing line, the apparatus comprising means for containing fish bait and enabling escape of the bait therefrom in a controlled fashion in use, and a unitary line connector which is rotatably but nonremovably fitted in an aperture in a wall of the containing means and which has a line attachment facility, whereby when the apparatus is attached to a fishing line by means of the facility, the containing means is freely rotatable relative to the line connector and the line.
Preferably the line connector is a push fit in the aperture and may be formed of a resiliently flexible material such as a moulded plastics material.
The line connector may comprise a substantially conical section integrally connected through a reduced dimension section with a base section whereby to form an annular groove between the conical section and the base section, the conical section being resiliently deformed when push fitted into the aperture, and the connector being retained in the aperture when the conical section has passed therethrough and has regained its initial form, the conical section and the base section being located on opposed sides of the wall of the containing means to prevent release of the connector therefrom. The line attachment facility preferably comprises an eye formed in the conical part.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the single figure of the accompanying drawing which is an exploded section through a bait feeding apparatus according to the invention.
Referring to the drawing, a bait feeding apparatus or "swim feeder" comprises a main container body 10, preferably formed of a transparent plastics material, and having an open end 12 and a closed end 15. The body 10 is preferably of cylindrical cross-section and may be formed in different lengths defined as small, medium and large sizes, each of which however has the same diameter. The body 10 is formed with a plurality of through apertures 16 for a purpose hereinafter desribed.
Towards the open end 12, the body 10 is formed on its external surface with an integral peripheral projection 14 which has an angled face 14a at the side thereof towards the open end 12, and, at the side of the projection 14 remote from the open end 12, a face 14b extending at substantially 90 to the wall of the body 10.
The open end 12 is arranged to be closed by a cap 18, preferably formed of a resiliently flexible plastics material, and having a plurality of through apertures 20 for a purpose hereinafter described. The cap 18 is formed towards its open end with an internal annular groove 22 having a cross-section substantially complementary to the cross-section of the projection 14 on the container body 10, whereby the cap 18 and the body 10 can be snap fitted together with the projection 14 engaging in the groove 22.
The flat face 14b of the projection 14 engages against the complementary flat face of the groove 22 to securely hold the cap 18 and the body 10 together when the apparatus is in use. To enable separation of the cap 18 from the body 1 0, the cap 18 is provided on its external surface with an integral protrusion 24 which can be engaged by the thumb of a user so as to flex the cap 18 and enable release of the projection 14 from the groove 22. The cap 18 also has on its external surface an annular knurled section 26 to facilitate handling by the user.
On a central axis of the assembled container body 10 and the cap 18, the latter is formed with a through hole 28 and the body 10 is provided with a through hole 30 of similar dimension on the central axis at its closed end 14. A line connector 32 is provided for location in the hole 28 and comprises a unitary member formed of a resiliently flexible material, preferably being a moulded plastics material. The connector 32 has a substantially conical section 34 connected through a reduced dimension section with a base section 38, whereby an annular groove 36 is formed between the conical section 34 and the base section 38. The connector 32 is push fitted through the hole 28 from internally of the cap 18, such that the conical section 34 is resiliently deformed to pass through the hole 28 and thereafter regain its initial form. The groove 36 has such a dimension as to freely located the connector 32 in the hole 28 with the conical section 34 and the base section 38 located on opposed sides of the wall of the cap 18, so that the device 32 is rotatably but non-removably fitted to the cap 18. An eye 40 is formed in the conical part 34 to enable the fishing line to be passed therethrough. Another connector 32 can be push fitted through the hole 30 in the body 10 from internally thereof whereby to be rotatably but non-removably connected thereto.
The body 10 of the swim feeder is weighted by the addition of a lead weight (not shown) which is in strip form and has turned ends engageable in spaced slots 42 provided in the wall of the container body 10, and the slots 42 may be dimensioned whereby to be able to receive one or more of the lead strips.
In use, the swim feeder is connected to a fishing line by the line passing through the eye 40 in the line connector 32. The container body 10 may be released from the cap 18 to enable stocking of the container with bait such as maggots, and is then reconnected to the cap 18 by the snap fitting. The design of the snap fitting is such as can retain the weighted container body 10 attached to the cap 18, even when the line with the swim feeder is cast, and the rotatable location of the line connector 32 within the cap 18 enables swivelling of the swim feeder relative to the fishing line. When the swim feeder sinks through the water, the maggots can escape in a controlled fashion through the apertures 16,20 whereby to create a feeding area. The size of the apertures may vary so as to vary the rate of feed. The amount of bait contained in the swim feeder may be varied by using the desired one of the small, medium and large versions, all of which can be reieasably attached to the cap 18 which remains located on the fishing line.
When it is desired to restock the swim feeder, it is necessary only to release the body 10 from the cap 18 and then the body 10 can be removed to any desired location where it is convenient to restock with bait. This is an advantage as the fishing line need not be removed from the swim feeder as a whole. There is thus provided a quick feed arrangement for restocking, and a quick change arrangement when a different size of swim feeder requires to be used.
When a connector 32 is attached to the body 10, an additional line may be threaded through the respective eye 40 to retain additional weights for the swim feeder if desired. It is also envisaged that with the connector 32 attached to the body 10, the latter, without use of the cap 18, may be attached to the fishing line by means of its connector 32, and thus provide an open end type of feeder.
The swim feeder therefore achieves all the desired advantages and is simple and inexpensive to produce with no conventional swivel connectors being required.
It is to be appreciated that the snap fit arrangement of the cap with the container body may be utilised with other types of line connectors which enable swivelling of the swim feeder by other means, and also that the line connector may be used with swim feeders other than a type having a snap fit connection between a main body and a cap. It is also to be appreciated that various other modifications may be made without departing from the invention.
For example, the cross-section of the container may be of any suitable shape other than cylindrical the snap fit connection may be other than that described, and the line connector may have other configurations enabling a rotatable and nonremovable connection.
