Description

(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN AND RELATING TO FISHING TACKLE (71) 1, PETER JOHN DRENNAN, a British subject of Leopold Street Works.
Oxford, Oxfordshire, do hereby declare the invention for which I pray that a patent may he granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to fishing tackle and more particularly to an improved device for dispensing bait.
The invention includes a bait dispenser.
comprising a generally elongate container having similar rounded end portions, of which one at least forms a removable closure, openings in said container walls and end portions for the bait to emerge, and means for attaching said container to a line.
In one form, the invention provides a simple convenient and effective means of dispensing ground bait, such as gentles or hemp and the like.
Features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description of an embodiment thereof given by way of example and the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through a bait dispenser, and Figure 2 is an end view of the dispenser of Figure 1.
The dispenser shown in the drawings is a container of generally cylindrical shape with domed ends. The container can be made in various ways but a convenient and simple way is that indicated in the drawings, where the container is made of a central cylindrical section 10, conveniently of a thin plastic material, with an end cap 11 at its one end, and a detachable and similar end cap 12 closing its other end.
The central section of the container fits a recessed portion 1 la of the domed end 11, and the container can be closed by the end cap 12 being pushed into the open end of the cylindrical section 10, where it is a friction fit.
The central section 11 is provided with a series of apertures 10a, which are of a size to permit a gentle or hemp, or like portion of bait, to pass through. Similarly, the end cap 11 is formed with apertures 1 ib and cap 12 with apertures 12b. The two end caps are also provided with central apertures through which passes a length of line 13, on which the dispenser is carried.
At one end the line is fastened to an Oring 14, for attachment to the trace or main part of the line, and at its other end the movement of the dispenser on the length of line is limited by a split shot weight 15 or the like. The arrangement is such that the container can freely rotate upon the line, obviating the use of a swivel.
In use, ring 14 is attached to the line and the weight of shot 15 is made sufficient to cause the dispenser to sink to the bottom.
To fill the dispenser the cap 12 is removed and bait inserted and the cap is replaced.
The dispenser can then be trailed over a fishing area by means of the attached line, the bait being dispensed through the holes in the container and the end caps.
The dispenser described has several practical advantages. It is simple to make; the end caps can be of moulded plastic material if desired. The external surface of the dispenser is smooth and therefore less likely to catch on obstructions: the dispenser is free to rotate on the line and the apertures in the end caps assist in producing a flow of water through the dispenser, which assists in the dispensin/ of the bait.
The dispenser can be made in various sizes, as desired.
One important advantage of the device described is that in dispensing bait the rig also acts as a ledger with sufficient weight to ensure that the tackle reaches the bottom and is anchored there; this adjustment is critical since the weight must just and only just hold on the bottom against the pressure of flow on the main reel line. With the device described it is a simple matter to add or remove lead shot to the main line below the dispenser. The device also casts extremely well and enters the water with little splash and there is little resistance when being retrieved, due partly to the smooth exterior contour, and also to the fact that the water can flow through the holes in the ends of the feeder.
A further advantage of the dispenser is that it is held to the length of line only by the lead shot; in the usual manner, these are split and merely pinched onto the line.
If the dispenser should foul an obstruction from which it cannot be freed by pulling on the line, if the tension on the line is increased, the shot yield, the dispenser detaches and the line is freed. The dispenser may be lost, but it is better to lose the inexpensive feeder than to damage, by over-tension or breakage, the more expensive line.
The dispenser is arranged so that it can run freely on the line between the ring and the shot, so that a fish taking the hook below the dispenser does not have to tow the dispenser.
WHAT I CLAIM IS:- 1. A bait dispenser, comprising a generally elongate container having similar rounded end portions, of which one at least forms a removable closure, openings in said container walls and end portions for the bait to emerge, and means for attaching said container to a line.
2. A bait dispenser according to claim I wherein the means for attaching said container to a line comprises centrally disposed holes in the ends of the container.
3. A bait dispenser according to claim 1 or 2, wherein said dispenser, with the closure in position has a contour which is smooth and substantially free from projections.
4. A bait dispenser according to any one of the preceding claims wherein said dispenser is of circular cross section.
5, A bait dispenser according to claim 4 wherein said container is formed with a cylindrical tubular portion permanently closed at one end by a said end portion, and closed at its other end by a removable said end portion forming said closure.
6. A bait dispenser according to claim 2 or according to any of claims 3 to 5 as dependent on claim 2 and including a length of line passing through said holes, at least one weight being attached to the line at one end and a fastening means for the line at the other.
7. A bait dispenser according to claim 6 wherein the fastening means is a ring.
8. A bait dispenser according to claim 6 or 7 wherein the weight end of the length of line is at the closed end of the container.
9. A bait dispenser substantially as described with reference to the accompanying drawing.

8. A bait dispenser according to claim 6 or 7 wherein the weight end of the length of line is at the closed end of the container.
