Abstract

Controlling variable-speed gearing.-In controlmechanism for change-speed gearing upon a motor-cycle operated by the rider's foot, a movable plunger G is provided to engage the gear lever A and stop it in a proper intermediate gear position. The lever A to be moved over quadrant E, Fig. 1, has an ordinary locking spring bolt C adapted to engage three notches E<2> in the, quadrant. A spring slider F, Fig. 2, carried by the lever is pulled by a cord F<3> so that an incline F<4> disengages the bolt C. As the lever moves upwards, a second spring bolt D strikes the lower side of the plunger G, which is in the form of a stout stud with a wide head guided by and moving freely in an arc-shaped slot E<3> The plunger G stops at position 2, when the lever A is in proper mid position X. To move the lever farther, a bigger displacement is given to the slider F until a second incline F<5> raises the bolt D clear of the plunger G. The lever A is then moved on by foot pressure to final position Y and locked on release of the slider F. On the downward movement, if the intermediate position X is required, the bolt D is left projecting so as to pick up the plunger G on its upper edge. When the plunger G steps at the lower end of the slot E<3>, the lever A is in position X. Further movement is obtained by disengaging the plunger by raising the bolt D as before.
