Abstract

213,060. Bailey, R. W., and Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co., Ltd. Feb. 1, 1923. Ball and float valves; closure members.-Apparatus for measuring and controlling fluids comprises an orifice 11, Fig. 1, the effective area of which is varied by a shutter 14 adjusted in accordance with the difference between the pressures on opposite sides of the orifice. The shutter actuating mechanism comprises floats 7, 8 which may be connected to a floating lever 18 carrying a bevel wheel 19 engaging a bevel wheel 20 slidably mounted on a shaft 21 connected to the shutter by bevel and rack and pinion gearing. In one modification, the floats carry racks engaging pinions on shafts which operate the shutter through differential gearing, and in another, the actuating mechanism comprises endless bands 38, 39, Fig. 3, pulleys 46, 47, bands 48, 49 and a lever 50 pivoted to a shutter rod 13. In all forms, the shutter is provided with anti-friction members 17, Fig. 5, and with flexible joint-making strips 16. A suitable moving member actuates an indicator and/or recorder, and a general rise or fall in pressure unaccompanied by an alteration in the pressure difference may be utilized to diminisli or increase the supply of fluid.
