Abstract

212,639. Haiste, J. H. Dec. 13, 1922. Overhead travellers and transporters.-Apparatus for unloading trawlers berthed end on at a crowded quay, suitable also for discharging ships overside, removing spoil from excavations, and for like purposes, comprises an inclined runway 1 adjustable on vertical and horizontal pivots 10, 12 above the loading point. The load 17 is hoisted and traversed by a rope 18 passing over a travelling pulley 15 and guide-pulleys 19, 21, 22. The configuration of the runway is such that the load moves along a path such as A, B, C, D, overrunning the hauling rope after reaching the point B and swinging downwards and forwards on to the quay beyond the end of the runway. The pulley 15' returns to the loading position by gravity. For hauling by means of a winch on the quay, the bracket 20 carrying the guide pulley 19 is reversed as at 20<a>. An alternative position for a winch on the vessel is shown at 23. The slope of the lower part of the runway may be such that the pulley 15 remains over the hatch until the load has been raised to the position 17a, or the pulley may be held in position by a catch. The runway is built up of five lengths of n -section lattice structure, with interlocking lugs and ears. In a modification suitable both for discharging and for loading the runway is inclined downwards from the centre to each end, the rope 18 passes round a pulley at the centre instead of the outer end of the runway, and the travelling pulley moves from the centre to the end by gravity. In this form, the travelling pulley may be attached to an endless chain which follows the contour of the runway and passes to a winding drum in order to ensure the passage of the pulley over the summit of the beam. The load may be supported from the carriage of the travelling pulley by catches which engage a grooved block on the rope 18 and are released automatically by a trip-plate fixed at a suitable position on the runway. A number of runways 1, Fig. 9, may be operated from a winding engine 51 and shafting 53 for driving any of a series of winding drums 54 through independent clutches.
