Abstract

212,612. Sokal, S. Dec. 5, 1922. Addition to 189,237. Hair-curling appliances.-The tool described in the parent Specification and in Specification 204,779 for tightening hair upon a curler is modified so that it may be used for winding the hair on the curler by the provision of a rotatable and longitudinally movable lock-holder and tensioning device and means for moving the holder longitudinally. The handles 1, 2, Figs. 1 and 2, of the tool are rotatably mounted on the boss 3 of a ratchet wheel 4, and carry pawls 5, 6 engaging the latter. A central rod 8 which engages the end of the curler 15 is fixed at its rear end to a disc 9 which is secured by rods 10 to the handle 2. Mounted on the rod 8 is an externally-threaded sleeve 12 secured by a clamp 14. Interchangeable sleeves with threads of different pitches may be provided. The curler 15 is connected to the end of the rod 8 through an intermediate piece 17 having slot and tongue connection with the rod 8. and with the outer end of the curler. The lockholder 18 is rotatably mounted by means of a boss 19 upon the curler and has a tubular extension 20 slidably connected with the ratchet wheel 4 by means of forks 21 engaging internal projections on the wheel. The movement of the holder is controlled by the screwed sleeve 12 through the agency of a pivoted arm 23 which engages the screw, and may be lifted out of engagement by a lever 25 and rod 24. The lock-holder 18 is provided with an adjustable tensioning device, shown diagrammatically in Fig. 3. The lock 29 passes from the curler 15 over guide-rods 30 and over two combs 31, 32, between which is a spring- actuated cylinder 33 through which the lock passes diametrically. The cylinder is made in two parts; a lower part 34, Fig. 4, rotatably mounted in the casing 36, and an upper part 37 pivoted to the lower part and held closed by a catch 39. The cylinder 33 is caused to revolve by a spring and so tension the hair. Pivoted guards 40, 41, Fig. 3, are provided over the combs 31, 32. After the hair has been secured at the root end to the fork of the curler, and the free end passed through the tension device, the curler and holder are inserted into the tool so that the projections 22, Fig. 2, of the ratchet wheel engage the projections 21 of the extension. On working the handles, the ratchet wheel is rotated continuously in one direction, and the engagement of the arm 23 with the screwed sleeve 12 causes the tension devices 18 to move longitudinally relatively to the curler. The tension device has means for winding a piece of band 43, Fig 3, around the end of the lock, comprising a drum 44 carrying the band and preferably provided with a brake so that it turns stiffly. The band is wound off the drum between the last few turns of hair. In a modified construction, shown in Figs. 6 and 7, the handle 46 is forked at its forward end, and in the two arms 47 of the fork is rotatably mounted a tubular member 48 having projections 49 engaging the extension of the tension device. Upon the part 48 is loosely mounted a pinion 50, on both sides of which are arranged ratchet wheels 51, 52 both fixed to the part 48. A pawl 53 carried by the pinion 50 engages the ratchet wheel 52, and a pawl 54 mounted on the left-hand arm 47 engages the ratchet wheel 51. The teeth of both ratchet wheels are arranged in the same direction. The parts 10, 11 which carry the central member are fixed to the right-hand fork 47, and to the far end of the handle 46 is pivoted a handle 56 which carries a toothed segment 58 meshing with the pinion 50. A spring tends to hold the handles apart. In order to obtain a flat band of hair of even thickness, the end 61, Fig. 9, of the curler may be provided with a thin rod 62 and a, comb 63. The hair is drawn between the parts 62 and 63 and the curler turned about its axis so that the teeth of the comb pass through the hair lying between the curler and the scalp. Two semi-cylindrical flaps pivoted to the curler are then closed upon the rod and comb, and the hair issues in a flat band between the edges of the flaps. In a modification, the hair is clamped in a flat tress between two jaws 65, 65, Fig. 14, one of which is pivoted, and a third jaw 66 is brought down so as to cover and clamp the part of the hair nearest the scalp.
