Abstract
189,237. Sokal, S. Aug. 27, 1921. Hair-waving.-A device for tightening the hair on a curler comprises two members rotatably mounted upon each other and adapted to grip the inner and outer parts respectively of the curler, and means for rotating one member relative to the other. One form of the device comprises two handles 1, 2, Figs. 1 and 2, pivoted at 4 and provided with a spring 3 tending to separate them. To the handle 1 is secured a tubular member 5, rotatably mounted upon which is a member 8. The latter carries a ratchet-wheel 9, with which engage two spring pawls 10, 11 carried by the handles 1, 2, and so disposed that the pawl 11 actuates the wheel 9 when the handles are moved together, while the pawl 10 prevents backward rotation of the wheel during the opening of the handles. The ratchet mechanism may be duplicated, as shown on the left of Fig. 1, so as to wind hair in the oppcsite direction; or one mechanism having two ratchet-wheels acting in opposite directions may be used. The inner head of the curler is provided with an extension 28, Fig. 3. passing through the body 25 and formed withspring tongues 27 and slots 29, and the curler body 25 is provided with spring tongues 26 normally - engaging with the slots 29. The tubular member 5 of the winding-device is provided with slots 30, Fig. 4, adapted to be engaged by the tongues 27, and the member 8 has slots 31 adapted to be engaged by the tongues 26. When the device is applied to the curler, the tongues 26 are moved out of engagement with the slots 29 by the member 8 and engage the slots 31, while the tongues 27 engage the slots 30 in the member 5. The hair on the curler is then tightened by the operation of the device. The clutches are so arranged that, on withdrawing the winding-device, the curler parts are locked together before they are disengaged from the members 5, 8. Another form of winding-device comprises a spring drum 40, Fig. 8, having inner and outer tubular members 47, 45 connected respectively to a boss 41 on the drum 40 and to the inner end of the spring 42, the outer end of the spring being secured to the drum 40. The members 45, 47 are normally locked by spring tongues 46 on the part 45, which engage slots on the part 47, and both parts have slots to engage the tongues of the curler parts. The spring is wound up bv a spanner or by the device above described, and is retained under tension by the tongue 46 till applied to the curler 51, when the tongue 46 is pushed out of the slot by the inner member 50 of the curler. The unwinding of the spring then tightens the hair, and the curler is locked as before on withdrawing the spring drum. The curler may be provided with an internal spring 36, Fig. 6, disposed between the body 32 and the head 33, the end of the curler being as shown in Fig. 3. The spring 36 may serve to tighten the hair, in which case it is wound up by the tool shown in Figs. 1 and 2 before coiling the hair upon it, and released by the use of a key, which disengages the tongues 26 from the slots in the part 28, at the same time engaging with and holding stationary the part 28, so tightening the hair on the curler; or the spring 36 may serve to loosen the hair after the heating operation, in which case it is arranged to be put under tension while the hair is being tightened by means of the tool, and released by means of the key to loosen the hair. The means for engaging the tool with the curler may be modified, for instance, by providing prismatic portions on each, and an ordinary claw coupling arranged to be automatically disengaged by the tool may be used. Alternatively, the two parts of the curler may be connected by a coupling operated by hand.
