Abstract

A method of constructing a permanent building comprises constructing an initial building 10 having an outer shell 18. Shuttering 22 is arranged outwardly of and spaced from the shell 18, and the space is filled with a settable building material such as concrete 25 to form at least part of a permanent wall. The shuttering is removed when the material 25 has adequate strength. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A method of construction This invention relates to a method of construction. In particular, the invention relates to a method of constructing a permanent building after the construction of an initial building, and using the initial building in the construction.
According to the invention, there is provided a method of constructing a permanent building, including constructing an initial building having an outer shell, arranging shuttering outwardly of the shell and spaced therefrom, filling the space between the shuttering and the shell with a settable building material to form at least part of a permanent wall, and removing the shuttering when the material has attained an adequate strength.
The method may include at least once arranging further shuttering outwardly of and spaced from the outer shell to form a space between the shuttering and outer shell and adjacent to a previously formed part of the permanent wall, filling the space with further settable building material which is allowed to set to form a further part of the permanent wall, and removing the shuttering when the further material has attained an adequate strength.
The permanent wall may be constructed in successive courses, each course extending upwardly from a previous course. The further shuttering may be secured in partially overlapping relationship with the previously formed part of the permanent wall.
The method may include fixing suitable securing means to at least one course of the permanent wall, for securing further shuttering to the course. The securing means may comprise elongated members, e.g. hook bolts or the like.
" The securing means may be at least partially embedded in the material of the course. Thus when the space between the shuttering and outer shell is filled with settable building material, the members may be cast into the permanent wall to protrude therefrom. In use, the further shuttering is secured to the protruding portions of the members, e.g. by nuts, and when the permanent wall has been completed, the protruding portions can be removed.
The method may further include constructing the initial building from prefabricated units. The prefabricated units may be supplied in the form of a kit.
The settable material may be concrete.
Conveniently, the permanent wall may comprise three courses, the first course extending from the ground level to about window sill height, the second course extending from window sill height to about door lintel height, and the third course extending from about door lintel height to the full height of the wall.
The shuttering may be shaped around doors and windows of the temporary building, so that the temporary building can be used whilst the walls of the permanent building are under construction.
The invention extends to a kit for constructing a permanent building, including prefabricated units for constructing an initial building, and shuttering designed for forming a mould cavity adjacent to and outwardly of the initial building, the shuttering being capable of isolating the doors and windows of the initial building from the mould cavity when the shuttering has been placed in position.
The invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows a three-dimensional front elevation of part of an initial building; Figure 2 shows part of the initial building with shuttering for a first course of a permanent wall placed in position in accordance with the invention; Figure 3 shows a three-dimensional front elevation of part of the initial building with further shuttering for a second course of the permanent wall located in position; Figure 4 shows in sectioned side elevation the first course of the permanent wall of Figure 2; and Figure 5 shows in sectioned side elevation the first course of the permanent wall with further shuttering as shown in Figure 3.
With reference to the drawings, part of an initial building is indicated generally by reference numeral 10. The part of the initial building 10 shown, has a door 12, a window 14, and a roof 16.
The building 10 has an outer shell 18 which may be of concrete panels, wood, asbestos fibre, or glassfibre-reinforced plastics. The building 10 is assembled from prefabricated units, e.g. 18.1 and 18.2, which are attached together at seams 20.
In practice, referring to figures 1 and 2, the initial building 10 is first constructed, for example by conventional methods, by securing the units 18.1, 18.2, etc., together at seams 20 to provide the outer shell 18. The door 12 and window 14 are mounted in position in the outer shell 18, and shuttering 22 for a first course of permanent wall is then arranged on the outer side of the shell 18, providing spaces 24 in the form of mould cavities between the shuttering 22 and the shell 1 8.
With reference to Figure 4, elongated members 32, comprising hook bolts, are fixed to the shuttering 22 by way of nuts 34, the hooked portion of each bolt 32 projecting into the space 24.
The spaces 24 are then filled with a fluid hardsetting material, such as mortar 25, which is allowed to set. The mortar 25 comprises a cement-sand mixture with a ratio of, for example, ten parts of sand to one part of cement.
After the mortar has set to form concrete, the shuttering 22 is removed, leaving a first course 26 of the permanent wall of the permanent building, the shell 1 8 remaining in the form of inner panelling lining the permanent wall. The hooked portions of the bolts 32 are then embedded in the first course 26 with a free portion of each bolt 32 projecting outwardly from the first course 26.
With reference now to Figure 3, further shuttering 28 is then secured to the first course 26 of the permanent wall by bolting the shuttering to the free portions of the bolts 32 as shown in Figure 5. A space 20, similar to the space 24, is thus left between the shuttering 28 and the shell 18. The shuttering 28 is provided with bolts 32 in the same manner as for the shuttering 22. The space 30 is then also filled with mortar 25 which is allowed to set.
The permanent wall is therefore built in courses by placing shuttering, such as 22 and 28, in position and repeating the procedure as set out above for each course. The shuttering of each course is thus secured to the bolts 32 provided in the previous course of the permanent wall. The free portions of the bolts 32 are removed after completion of the permanent wail.
During construction of the permanent wall, the shuttering isolates the sides of the spaces 24 from the windows and doors so that openings are left for the door(s), and so that the building 10 can be used whilst construction is under way.
An advantage of the present invention is that an initial building, e.g. a house, can be constructed from prefabricated units in relatively short period of time. Thereafter, whilst the building is being used, the permanent walls can be constructed over any desired period of time, without affecting the use of the building. Thus, the occupants themselves can construct the permanent building.
