Purifying liquids.-In water-softening apparatus of the kind employing zeolites, the inlet and outlet for water and for regenerating solution are arranged so that the liquid is caused to enter and leave the vessel evenly over the whole cross-section of the vessel in a direction opposite to that in which it passes through the zeolite material. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 1, the water enters the softening chamber B by radial pipes a<2> having holes on their upper surface so as to direct the flow against the top of the vessel. The outlet d<2> is arranged with the holes directed downwards. Regenerating liquid enters from a tank F by a pipe D and flows upwards and to waste through a pipe H. The radial pipes a<2>, d<2> may have gauze guards j, Figs. 6 and 7. Instead of employing a bed of gravel &c. to support the zeolites, such a supporting bed is formed of zeolite fragments of large size, say one-quarter to threeeights of an inch in diameter, and smaller fragments are placed above to form the main bed.
