Description

SPECIFICATION Refrigerator with device for collecting the water from defrosting The present invention relates to a refrigerator of domestic type, provided with a device for collecting the water from defrosting, which, being virtually distilled water, can be used for various purposes (irons, electric batteries etc).
Normally, the water produced by defrosting the evaporator unit of a refrigerator is collected in a small basin which is periodically emptied, or the water is discharged directiy to the outside of the refrigerator by means of suitable conduits provided in the refrigerator casing.
In the former casa, the water produced by defrosting may be put to use, but it has to be poured off into suitable containers and thus the arrangement appears to be inconvenient and not very practical; in addition, the basin for collecting the water is completely open and the water may easily be contaminated by foreign bodies or substances which drop into the basin.
In the second case, the water produced by defrosting is simpiy removed, without any possibility of its being put to use.
According to the present invention, there is provided a refrigerator provided with a device for collecting the water from defrosting, comprising a defrost water collecting conduit and a conduit for discharging the water to the outside of the refrigerator, there being interposed between the collecting conduit and the discharge conduit a container for collecting the water from defrosting, said container being provided with a feed opening in association with the discharge end of the collecting conduit and an overflow opening in association with the inlet of the discharge conduit.
As will become apparent from the following description, the invention can provide a device which is of a simple construction and very convenient to use, and which makes it possible to collect and make use of the water produced by defrosting, ensuring purity thereof, for a very wide range of uses of the refrigerator, and is characterised in that interposed between the collecting conduit and the discharge conduit is a container for collecting the water from defrosting, said container being provided with a feed opening in association with the discharge end of the collecting conduit and an overflow opening in association with the inlet of the discharge conduit.
The container may be of a suitable shape, with a handle to facilitate handling thereof, and be provided with a filter which closes its feed opening in such a way as to prevent foreign bodies from penetrating into the container.
The features of the invention will now be more fully described with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows by way of non-limiting example a diagrammatic cross sectional view of the refrigerator and the device in question.
The embodiment of refrigerator according to the invention shown in the drawing comprises a casing 1 which is subdivided into two superposed compartments 2 and 3 provided with respective doors 4 and 5.
The compartment 2 constitutes the compartment for preserving foods and drinks and is provided with an evaporator unit 6 which requires periodic defrosting in order to operate efficiently.
Disposed below the evaporator unit 6, along the rear wall of the casing 1, is a gutter arrangement 7 for collecting the water produced by defrosting.
Connected to the gutter arrangement 7 is a collecting conduit 8 which is arranged to pass the water into a container 9 which is arranged with its feed opening below the lower discharge end of the conduit 8.
The container 9 is of the configuration shown in the drawing and is provided with a handle so that it can be easily and conveniently removed from and fitted into the compartment 2.
The feed opening of the container 9 is provided with a removable filter 10 to prevent contaminating substances or foreign bodies from passing into the container 9.
The filter 10 may be of any known type, and in particular may be a mesh filter of sufficiently small mesh size.
The container 9 is also provided with a downwardly directed overflow opening 11 in a widening zone of the container, above the relatively narrow central section of the container, through which the excess water in the container overflows, by way of a connecting funnel 12, into a discharge conduit 13 which discharges the excess defrost water to the outside of the refrigerator.
The upper mouth opening of the funnel 12 is disposed at a position below and associated with the lower end of the conduit 8 in such a way as to collect and discharge to the exterior the water produced by defrosting, when, for any reason, the container 9 has been removed from the compartment 2.
The configuration of the container 9 is such as to permit its feed opening to be inserted between the lower end of the conduit 8 and the upper mouth opening of the funnel 12, thereby ensuring that the device is functional in any operating condition.
It will be appreciated that the device may be constructed in various forms while still falling within the same design concept.
In fact, the container 9 may be of various configurations and may be positioned in the compartment 2 in dependence on the position of the conduits 8 and 13, provided that the abovedescribed conditions of interdependence are fulfilled.
