Abstract

Colour filters. - Light filters or screen for varying the colour or intensity of a beam of light consists of a cell having glass sides at right angles to the transmitted beam adapted to be moved towards or away from one another to vary the thickness of the contents of the cell in the direction of the beam. The cell a is supported on a vertical rod b and is recessed at one end to receive a glass plate a<1>, held in place by a ring a<2> so as be fluid-tight. A piston a<3> slides in the cell a and carries at its inner end a glass plate a<4> which may be moved into contact with the plate a<1> so that the whole of the incident beam is transmitted. The piston consists of two sleeves a', a<5>, the outer one being flanged and connected to a nut a<8> engaging threads on a screw a<9> forming an extension of a wheel all, operated by the shaft a<13>. Rotation of the shaft a<13> adjusts the thickness of the fluid in the cell by the separation of the glass plates a<1>, a<4>. The space between the plates is in communication with a reservoir forming part of the cell casing. The nut a<8> is prevented from rotating bv the stud a<15> engaging a slot in the plate a<16>, which when removed permits the piston to be readily withdrawn from the cell.
