[Class 40 (iii)] A high-pressure metallicvapour electric-discharge lamp 1, the brightness of whose discharge column exceeds 1,500 candles per sq. cm., illuminates a scanning-gate 3 through a condenser 2, which has different focal lengths in two planes at right-angles with the maximum magnification perpendicular to the axis of the discharge column. The axis of the discharge column is parallel to the direction of linescanning.
