Description
SPECIFICATION
Cover for clothes drier
This invention relates to a cover for a clothes drier, referred to hereinafter as a clothes drier of the type specified, comprising an upright central support, support arms radiating outwardly from the central support and lengths of clothes line extending between the arms to enable clothes which are to be dried to be suspended therefrom.
Clothes driers of the type specified are well known for domestic use, and have the great advantage, over conventional clothes lines strung between two supports, of providing a compact drier occupying only a small space and yet capable of drying a substantial number of clothes.
It is an object of the invention to provide a removable cover for a clothes drier of the type specified, to enable clothes to be dried even in rainy conditions.
According to the invention there is provided a cover for a clothes drier of the type specified, the cover being adapted to be mounted removably on the radiating support arms of the drier;
in which the cover comprises a support frame which is detachably mountable on said support arms, and a top cover which is arranged to be supported in use by the support frame so as to form a cover for the drier which extends over the radiating support arms of the drier, the top cover being provided with means for attaching the cover to the radially outer ends of the support arms.
Preferably the support frame is also detachably mounted in/on the upper end of the central support of the drier, and comprises a central downwardly extending stub to be received in/on the upper end of the central support, and resiliently deformable support elements extending radially outwardly of the stub so as to overlie the support arms of the drier.
The support elements have means, at their radially outer ends, for attaching the support elements to the support arms, the elements being deformable upwardly into an arched shape when they are attached to the support arms so as to impart a generally dome shape to the top cover. Conveniently, the elements are made of plastics tubing.
In order to provide further weather protection for clothes suspended from the lines of the drier, the cover may include a skirt which extends in use downwardly from the radially outer ends of the support arms throughout a length sufficient to protect the clothes from wind-borne rain. The skirt may be provided in two or more portions, and at least one of the portions may be arranged to be hung from the support arms in such a way as to be drawn open or closed along one of the other lengths of line of the drier. The top cover may also be attached to the outer lengths of the line of the drier.
The attachment of the radially outer ends of the radiating support arms of the drier to the top cover and to the skirt may take any convenient form.
Preferably, to provide simple means for this attachment, reinforced holes may be formed at the required positions in the top cover and skirt, to enable the outer ends of the support arms to project therethrough to a small extent. The attachment may then be completed by the use of tape ties or the like.
Preferably, the skirt is formed in two portions, one of these portions being suspended from one of the outer lengths of line of the drier to be drawn, in the manner of a curtain, to the right or to the left as desired. The other portion may comprise a double portion (when the drier has three radiating support arms) which is attached at the middle of the upper edge to the outer end of one of the support arms and extends on either side towards the outer ends of the two other support arms. The double skirt portion also can be drawn back, on either side, to enable access to be had to and from the interior of the drier.
If desired, detachable fastenings may be provided along the adjacent vertical edges of the portions of the skirt, to enable the skirt portions to be attached and detached.
In order to stiffen the upper outer edge of the top cover, an elastic or rubber insert may be fitted.
One embodiment of cover according to the invention for a clothes drier of the type specified will now be described in detail, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a schematic side illustration of the cover mounted in position on the clothes drier; and
Figure 2 is a schematic plan view of the cover and the clothes drier.
Referring now to the drawing, there is shown a clothes drier of the type specified, designated generally by reference numeral 10, which comprises an upright central support 11, and three support arms 12 radiating outwardly from the central support 11, and lengths of-clothes line 13 extending between the arms 12 to enable clothes which are to be dried to be suspended therefrom. Only the outer lengths of the line 13 are shown in Figures 1 and 2, though it should be understood that further lengths of the line will be provided, in conventional manner, which extend around and inwardly towards the central support 11.
A cover for the clothes drier 10 is designated generally by reference numeral 14 and is adapted to be mounted removably on at least the radiating support arms 12 of the drier 10. The cover 14 comprises an support frame 15 which is detachably mounted on the support arms 12 and the central support 11, and a top cover 16 which is arranged to be supported by the support frame 15 so as to form a cover for the drier 10 which extends over the radiating support arms 12 of the drier 10. The top cover 16 is provided with means for attaching the cover to the radially outer ends of the support arms 12, such means comprising reinforced apertures formed at the required positions in the outer periphery of the top cover 16, through which the radially outer ends of the arms 12 can be taken. The attachment can be completed by provision of tape ties.
The support frame 15 comprises a downwardly extending central stub 17 which is mounted in/on the usual aperture in/on the upper end 18 of the central support 11, and resiliently deformable support elements 19 which extend radially outwardly of the stub 17 so as to overlie the support arm 12 of the drier 10.
The support elements 19 are made preferably of plastics tubing, and can be deformed upwardly so as to adopt an arch shape when their radially outer ends 20 are attached to suitable mounting positions 21 along the lengths of the arms 12. The attachment of the outer ends 20 of the elements 19 to the arms 12 may take any convenient form, preferably by providing tape ties (not shown). The arched shape provided by the support elements 19 impart a generally dome shape to the top cover 16, which thereby forms a protective weather cover for clothes which are suspended from the lines of the drier 10.
In order to provide further weather protection for the suspended clothes, the cover 14 also includes a skirt 22 which extends in use downwardly from the radially outer end of the support arms 12 throughout a length sufficentto protect the clothes from windborne rain. The skirt 22 is preferably provided in two separate portions, one of which extends between the radially outer ends of two of the arms 12, hung in the manner of a curtain from the length of line 13 extending between the outer ends of the arms 12, and the other of which comprises a double skirt portion which is attached at the middle of its upper edge to the outer end of the remaining arm 12 and extends on either side from this attachment towards the outer ends of the other two arms 12.The two sides of the double skirt portion may be drawn between open and closed positions along respective outer lengths of the line 13. If desired, detachable fasteners may be provided for attaching the adjacent vertical edges of the skirt portions to each other.
As indicated above, the central stub 17 of the frame 15 is received in/on the upper end 18 of the central support 11 of the drier 10. Figures 1 and 2 also show the usual shorter radiating support arms 23 of drier 10, which are pivoted to the arms 12 and lock the arms 12 in the required V-shape.
The upper edge of the top cover 16 may be fitted with an elastic or rubber insert, to reduce the outer edge size of the cover at each of the three segments of the drier 10. Thus, for a drier 10 having a length of, for example, eight feet between the outer ends of adjacent arms 12, the inserts may reduce the outer edge size of the cover 16 to five feet.
In addition to the skirt 22 being "threaded" along the outer lengths of the line 13, the top cover 16 may also be similarly attached to these lengths of line.
The top cover 16 provides weather protection for clothes which are to be dried, and extends over and above the support arms 12 of the dried 10. In addition, top cover 16 has a downwardly extending flange portion 24, above which are provided three reinforced holes of about half-inch diameter, into which the outer, ends of the arms 12 are entered. As indicated above, small tape ties may be provided, to secure the top cover 16 to the ends of the arms 12.
Central support of the top cover 16 is provided, as indicated above, by a three legged type of pliable plastics tube assembly, bent to curvature, dictated by drier size. The tubular support elements 19 may be supplied, to size, or may be cut down to size by the installer/user, when the cover is being used on smaller sized driers.
The double sided portion of the skirt 22 is attached to the outer end of one of the arms 12 by provision of the half-inch reinforced holes formed in the skirt portion, which is positioned under the flange 24 of the top cover 16. The detachable fastenings of the portions of the skirt 22 may take any convenient form, such as buttons, press-studs, zips and the like.
The top cover 16 and the skirt 22 of the cover 14 may be made of any suitable flexible and weatherproof material. Lightweight plastics sheet material is particularly suitable.
The construction of the support frame 15, which has been described above with reference to the drawing, includes a downwardly extending central stub 17 which is mounted in the usual aperture in the upper end 18 of the central support 11. However, the central stub 17 may be differently constructed, in that some constructions of driers do not readily lend themselves to the mounting of central stub 17 in the upper end. For such driers, the central stub 17 may be constructed so as to be capable of being mounted on the upper end of the central support 11. To this end, central stub 17 may comprise a flanged disc which fits over the upper end of the support 11, and a length of plastics tube which fits within an upwardly extending collar provided on the flange disc, and extends upwardly therefrom in order to support the cover 16.
If desired, reinforcement may be built-in to the cover 16, to receive the upper end of the plastics tube. The resiliently deformable support elements 19 extend upwardly in an arched shaped, from one support arm 12 to another, generally in similar manner to that already described.
The support frame 15 may also be constructed, if desired, without provision of any central support stub 17. It is possible to construct the support frame 15 sufficiently sturdily, that it can provide the necessary support for the cover 16 via the arrangement of the resiliently deformable support elements 19 on the support arms 12 of the drier 10.
