Description
SPECIFICATION
Door latch handle device
This invention relates to door latch handle devices, such as those used on large refrigerators for example. Conventionally, a latch handle device has a latch mechanism part near a pivoting part at one end of a handle.
Therefore, the latch mechanism part is positioned near one end part of the handle. Thus, the handle is of a large shape extending out of the latch mechanism part, the entire length of the device is great and the design is unbalanced. Further, as the latch is not positioned in the middle part of the handle it is difficult to design the box body and door.
Also, as the latch is not positioned in the middle part of the entire handle device, when the door is closed the fastening force of the latch will not be uniformly applied to both sides of the latch and in the case where, for example, a rubber packing is interposed between the door and box body, it will not be able to be uniformly pressed to obtain a positive sealed state.
An object of the present invention is to provide a well balanced door latch handle device wherein a handle extends to overlap above a latch mechanism part.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a door latch handle device wherein a latch is positioned in the middle part of a handle and therefore it is easy to design the door and box body.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a door latch handle device wherein a latch is positioned in the middle part of the entire device so that the fastening force of the latch may be uniformly applied to the entire device to positively seal the door.
According to the invention there is provided a door latch handle device comprising a case securable to a door, a sliding frame provided within the case, the frame being slidable forwardly and rearwardly and biased forwardly within the case, a latch shaft laterally mounted in an intermediate lower part of the frame, the latch shaft being engageable in the forward position with a hook unit securable to a box body and disengageable therewith in the rearward position, and a handle pivotable at a base end part of a forward upper part of the case, the handle extending along the case so as to overlap above it and having in a position downwardly of the pivoting part a pressing projecting piece contacting the front end of the sliding frame so that when the handle is rotated in a rising direction the sliding frame is pushed to retreat and the latch shaft disengages with the hook unit.
An embodiment of the invention is described in detail below, by example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a door latch handle device according to the present invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the device of Fig.
1;
Figure 3 is a sectional view along line Ill-Ill in Fig. 2;
Figure 4 is a sectional view along line IV-IV in Fig. 2; and
Figure 5 is a sectional view along line V-V in Fig. 2.
As shown in the drawings, the door latch handle device comprises a sliding frame 2 slidably fitted in its extending direction within an elongate box-shaped case 1 secured to a door. The frame 2 is normally forwardly biased by a pushing spring 3 inserted between its rear part and the case 1 and it has a latch shaft 4 mounted in its middle lower part. The latch shaft projects out of a bottom opening 1 a of the case 1 and is engageable and disengageable with a hook unit 1 3 secured to a box body provided with the door to which the case is secured. A contact shaft 5 is mounted in the forward upper part of the sliding frame 2.
A handle 6 is pivotable about a shaft 7 in the forward upper part of the case 1, extends above to overlap the case 1 and is provided with a projecting piece 8 projecting downwardly of the pivot shaft 7. This projecting piece 8 is normally in contact with the front surface of the contact shaft 5 of the above mentioned sliding frame 2. A through hole 9 is made forward of the pivot shaft 7 of the handle and is aligned with inserting holes Ic made on both side plates 1 b of the case 1 so that when a lock shaft 10 is inserted through them in this position the handle 6 will be prevented from rotating. The lock shaft 10 is provided with a head part 1 Oa at one end and with a through hole 1 Ob in the other end. A padlock can be locked through this through hole 1 Ob.In the part of the handle 6 in front of the through hole 9 a stopper projection 11 is provided which projects forward so as to contact a corresponding stopper projection 1 2 provided forwardly within the above mentioned case 1 to limit the rotating range of the handle 6.
A hook unit 1 3 secured to the box body consists of a fitting seat 14 and a hook plate 1 5 which can be moved to adjust the fitting height with respect to the fitting seat 1 4. A tapered part 1 spa is formed at the upper corner of the hook part so as to be slidable in contact with the latch shaft 4. When the door is closed, the hook plate 14 will move into the bottom opening 1 a of the case to be engageable with the latch shaft 4.
The operation of the door latch handle device is explained in the following. When the door of the box body provided with this latch handle device is closed, the latch shaft 4 of the sliding frame 2 will contact the tapered part 1 spa of the hook plate 15, will retreat within the case 1 together with the sliding frame 2 while compressing the spring 3 by sliding in contact with the tapered part 1 5 and will be returned to engage with the hook plate 15, due to the spring force, past the tip of the hook part.If the handle 6 is rotated to rise from this position, the contact shaft 5 of the sliding frame 2 will be pushed by the pressing projecting piece 8 and will retreat within the case 1 together with the sliding frame 2 while compressing the spring 3 and the latch shaft 4 will also retreat together with it to be disengaged with the hook plate 1 5 so that the door will be able to opened. When the stopper projection 11 of the handle contacts the stopper projection 1 2 of the case, the rotation of the handle 6 will be stopped so as to prevent the mechanism part from being overburdened by the rotation. If the door is to be locked, the lock shaft 10 may be inserted into the through holes 1c and 9 and the padlock may be locked.Even if the lock shaft 10 is inserted while the door is open only the handle will be only fixed and therefore, when the door is closed, the sliding frame 2 will retreat, will be engageable with the hook unit 1 3 and the door will be locked.
Summarizing the above, the present invention has advantages that, as the sliding frame 2 is provided biased forwardly within the case secured to the door, the latch shaft 4 in the intermediate lower part of the sliding frame 2 is made engageable and disengageable with the hook unit 1 3 secured to the box body, the handle 6 is pivoted in the forward upper part of the case 1 and is extended so as to overlap above and along the case and the pressing projecting piece 8 provided to project downwardly of the pivot shaft 7 of the handle 6 so as to contact the front surface of the above mentioned contact shaft 5 of the sliding frame 2, the handle 6 can be extended to coincidence with the same position above the case 1 containing the latching mechanism without deviating from the position so as to reduce the entire length and the entire device can be well balanced and, as the latch shaft 4 is positioned in the middle part of the entire device and the fitting centre position of the device substantially coincides with the fitting position of the hook unit 13, the box body and door can be easily designed, the fasten ing force can be uniformly applied to uniformly press the packing or the like interposed between the door and box body to positively seal them.
Further, where the handle 6 and case 1 are provided respectively with the stopper projections 11 and 12, the mechanism part will be able to be prevented from being broken by the excess rotation of the handle and a tough latch handle device capable of enduring long use will be able to be obtained.
Further, where the holes 9 and 1 C are made through both handle 6 and case 1, when the lock shaft 10 is inserted through them and is locked with the padlock, the device will be able to be locked strongly.
