Abstract

A plumber's Spanner consists of an open cylindrical head (1) with seven or nine vertical grooves (5) to hold six- or eight-sided nuts by four or five corners respectively. Tangentially attached to the head is a cylinder with a grooved opening for accepting a similarly shaped handle (7). The handle can therefore be inserted at different angles to the head. The Spanners can be supplied in different sizes and the handles in varying lengths. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A multiheaded plumbers spanner kit This invention relates specifically to a spanner to be used on nuts that secures pipes to plumbing fittings.
The invention consists of a head which is substantially of cylindrical half-moon shape and is provided with seven or nine vertical grooves on the inside face of the head in such a manner that the head may be pushed past a pipe then moved transversely to engage a nut on four of its salient corners in the case of a six sided nut so that it can be turned by 22.3" at a time and five of its salient corners in the case of a eight sided nut so that it can be turned by 18 at a time.
The head is further provided with a cylinder in a tangental position to the main body of the head and provided with grooves to take a handle with shaped end to correspond with the said grooves in such a manner that the handle may be co-planar with or perpendicular to the head or at intermediate angles to the head.
A variety of sized of heads plus one or two handles of different lengths make up a comprehensive tool whereby a plumber can turn a nut in a confined space making use of only one hand.
Fig. 1 shows one embodiment of this invention. The head (1) is provided with a gap (2) which passes over a pipe (3) to engage a nut (4) and is provided with seven grooves (5) which engage four salient corners of the nut (6). A further cylinder is provided (7) with grooves (8) to engage a handle (9) so that the nut can be turned 22.+ before repositioning.
The grooves in the spanner head may conveniently be slightly shorter than the depth of the head (10) so that the head becomes selflocating.
1. A cylindrical grooved Spanner, resembling a box spanner but with one open side, enabling it to be fitted round a pipe and moved to accomodate a nut attaching the pipe to a fitting (for example a bath-tap).
2. A Spanner as claimed in Claim 1 in which the number of grooves on the head vary to fit different sized nuts, for instance a seven-grooved spanner head to hold a sixsided nut at four corners, and a nine-grooved spanner head to hold an eight-sided nut at five corners.
3. A Spanner as claimed in Claim 1 and Claim 2 which has a cylindrical adjunct provided with a grooved aperture to accept a detachable handle, thus enabling leverage to be applied at varying angles.
4. A Spanner as claimed in Claim 1 and Claim 2 in which the grooves in the spanner head are shorter than the depth of the head, making the head self-locating.
5. A Multiheaded Plumbers Spanner Kit, containing several sizes of spanners as claimed in Claims 1-4, and two or more sizes of spanner handle.
