It is therefore the principal object of the invention to provide a tie-rod end tool which will enable the easy removal of the tie-rod end.
Another object of this invention is to provide a tierod end tool which will have yoke means in which the head end of the tie-rod will be received, the yoke having slack adjustment means through one side for tightening the end of the tie-rod therein.
Another object of this invention is to provide a tierod end tool which will have projection means with an opening for receiving a power wrench which will be used to remove the tie-rod end from the tie-rod.
A further object of this invention is to provide a tool of the type described, which will have opening means through one side of the yoke for receiving the projecting end portion of the end of the tie-rod and spacer washers are used to adapt the tool to various size tierod ends.
The other objects of the invention are to provide a tie-rod end tool which is simple in design. inexpensive to manufacture, rugged in construction. easy to use and efficient in operation.
These and other objects will be readily evident upon a study of the following specification and the accompanying drawing, wherein:
FIG. 1 is a side view of the present invention shown in elevation and partly broken away;
FIG. 2 is a view taken along the line 22 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is a plan view of one of the spacers that may be used to adapt the device to different sized tie-rod ends;
FIG. 4 is a view taken along the line 44 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary view of FIG. 1, showing the pin received within the slack adjustment screw.
According to this invention. a tool is shown to include a U-shaped yoke 11 member from which extends a projection 12 having an opening I3 for receiving a power wrench.
Yoke ll receives the end 14 of tic-rod l5 and the pin 14a of end 14 is slideably received within the slotted opening 11a of yoke 11. The opposite end of pin 14a is received within the recessed opening 16a of screw 16 carried through one side of yoke 11.
The spacer 17 is used in plurality so as to reduce the size of tool 10 and are also used to sensor the smaller tie-rod end.
In use, the tie-rod end 14 is placed as shown in FIG. I of the drawing. The slack adjustment screw 16 is then tightened like a vice and a power wrench is applied to the projection 12 by means of the opening 13 so as to rotate and thus remove tie-rod end 14 from the tie-rod 15.
What I now claim is:
1. Apparatus for the removal of a tie-rod comprising in combination: a U-shaped yoke member including first and second legs, the first leg of the yoke member including a slotted opening allowing the insertion therein ofa pin of the tie-rod end; means carried by the yoke member for the attachment of a power wrench thereto to allow rotating of the yoke member; and a slack adjustment screw carried by the second leg of the yoke member, wherein the end of a tie-rod can be inserted in the apparatus such that the pin of the tie-rod end is received within the slotted opening of the first leg and the side opposite the pin of the tie-rod end is placed adjacent the slack adjustment screw such that the slack adjustment screw can be tightened against the tie-rod end thereby securely grasping the tie-rod within the yoke member.
2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein: the slack adjustment screw is carried within a recessed portion of the second leg of the yoke member and is threadably carried in the second leg so as to provide vice gripping means for the tie-rod end; and the slack adjustment screw includes a recessed head for receiving the side opposite the pin of the tie-rod end; and wherein the apparatus further includes means for adapting the yoke member to fit various size tie-rod ends.
3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the means for adapting the yoke member to fit various size tie-rod ends comprises a washer.
