Abstract
212,018. Thornton, A. A., (Stone, A. J.). Jan. 1, 1923. Screw propellers.-Relates to hollow metal airscrews produced by electrolytic deposition on a matrix which can be removed by melting and consists in embedding in the matrix stiffening members for the screw which members remain within and joined thereto when the matrix is removed. Perforated stiffening struts 2 are embedded in a matrix of wax which is coated with plumbago and immersed in the electrolytic tank. When a sufficient thickness of metal 1 is deposited, the propeller is withdrawn from the tank, a hole is bored through which the wax can run out when the propeller is heated. The hub may be inserted in the matrix, or be subsequently attached to the propeller. The deposition may be made in two stages, a first thin coating of copper being followed by a second thick coating of a harder metal as nickel. Instead of wax a metal matrix such as lead with a melting point lower than the deposited material may be used for the matrix.
