Abstract

The apparatus 1, e.g. for a French locking window or patio door, has separate connectors 2, 3 in the form of racks which are adapted at 5 for connection with locking rods and slidable locking means in the form of studs 6 secured to the rack 2. The racks 2 and 3 are engaged with a gear 8 which can be turned on insertion of a tommy bar in a square hole 9. Turning the gear 8 moves the racks and the studs 6 in unison. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Apparatus for locking a closure The invention relates to apparatus for locking a closure, for example a door such as a French window or patio door which may be a casement closure or a sliding closure.
According to the invention there is provided apparatus for locking a closure, comprising separate connectors for connection with locking bolts of the closure, a slidable locking means for engagement with a keeper, and means to throw and retract the separate connectors and slidable locking means in order to lock and unlock the closure.
The means to throw and retract may comprise a toothed gear which engages with engagement means of the connectors, one of which carries the slidable locking means.
The engagement means of each connector may comprise a rack.
Alternatively, the means to throw and retract may comprise a toothed double gear means, one of which engages with engagement means of the connectors and the other of which engages with engagement means of the slidable locking means, whereby, on turning of the toothed double gear means the slidable locking means and the connectors are moved in unison.
The slidable locking means may comprise a stud or studs, say two studs, the or each of which has an enlarged head for engagement behind a keeper which comprises a plate with one or more key-hole shaped slots for receiving the or each stud and in one position locking the head.
The invention extends to a closure incorporating apparatus as herein described.
An apparatus embodying the invention as shown in the accompanying drawing which shows a plan view of the apparatus with a top plate removed.
Referring to the drawing, the apparatus 1 shown is for locking a- closure and has separate connectors 2 and 3 in the form of racks which are adapted as at 5 for connection with locking rods and a slidable locking means in the form of studs 6 on a plate (not shown) in housing 7 and which project to be secured to the rack 2 so that when that moves in the direction of the arrow X, the studs move in unison. The racks 2 and 3 are engaged with the teeth of a means in form of a gear 8 which can be turned on insertion of a key such as a square tommy bar in a square hole 9.
The gear and racks are mounted between two laminated plates one of which 10 is shown which is supported- by housing 7. The plates have grooves in which the racks sent and which act as guides therefor.
Turning the gear 8 anti-clockwise as viewed, lowers the rack 2 and studs 6 and raises the rack 3 in unison, so unlocking the door (the heads of the studs then being aligned with enlargements of key hole slots in a keeper not shown) so that the door can be opened.
Clockwise movement of the gear raises the racks 2 and 3 and the studs 6 to lock the door when it is in the closed position (the keeper is on the door frame).
1. Apparatus such as an espagnolette for locking a closure, comprising separate connectors for connection with locking bolts of the closure, a slidable locking means for engagement with a keeper, and means to throw and retract the locking means in order to lock and unlock the closure.
2. Apparatus according to Claim 1, the means to throw and retract comprising a toothed gear which engages with engagement means of the connectors, one of which carries the slidable locking means.
3. Apparatus according to Claim 2, the engagement means of each connector comprising a rack.
4. Apparatus according to Claim 2, the means to throw and retract comprising a toothed double gear means, one of which engages with engagement means of the connectors and the other of which engages with engagement means of the slidable locking means, whereby, on turning of the toothed double gear means the slidable locking means and the connectors are moved in unison.

Apparatus according to any preceding claim, the slidable locking means comprising a stud or studs, the or each of which has an enlarged head for engagement with a keeper which comprises a plate with one or more key-hole shaped slots for receiving the or each stud andin one pbsition locking the head.
6. Apparatus according to any preceding claim, the means to throw and retract being mounted in a housing which includes opposed plates each bearing a groove in which a respective connector is guided for reciprocation.
7. Apparatus for locking a closure, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawing.
8. A closure such as a casement closure or sliding closure, incorporating apparatus according to any preceding claim.

SPECIFICATION Apparatus for locking a closure The invention relates to apparatus for locking a closure, for example a door such as a French window or patio door which may be a casement closure or a sliding closure. According to the invention there is provided apparatus for locking a closure, comprising separate connectors for connection with locking bolts of the closure, a slidable locking means for engagement with a keeper, and means to throw and retract the separate connectors and slidable locking means in order to lock and unlock the closure. The means to throw and retract may comprise a toothed gear which engages with engagement means of the connectors, one of which carries the slidable locking means. The engagement means of each connector may comprise a rack. Alternatively, the means to throw and retract may comprise a toothed double gear means, one of which engages with engagement means of the connectors and the other of which engages with engagement means of the slidable locking means, whereby, on turning of the toothed double gear means the slidable locking means and the connectors are moved in unison. The slidable locking means may comprise a stud or studs, say two studs, the or each of which has an enlarged head for engagement behind a keeper which comprises a plate with one or more key-hole shaped slots for receiving the or each stud and in one position locking the head. The invention extends to a closure incorporating apparatus as herein described. An apparatus embodying the invention as shown in the accompanying drawing which shows a plan view of the apparatus with a top plate removed. Referring to the drawing, the apparatus 1 shown is for locking a- closure and has separate connectors 2 and 3 in the form of racks which are adapted as at 5 for connection with locking rods and a slidable locking means in the form of studs 6 on a plate (not shown) in housing 7 and which project to be secured to the rack 2 so that when that moves in the direction of the arrow X, the studs move in unison. The racks 2 and 3 are engaged with the teeth of a means in form of a gear 8 which can be turned on insertion of a key such as a square tommy bar in a square hole 9. The gear and racks are mounted between two laminated plates one of which 10 is shown which is supported- by housing 7. The plates have grooves in which the racks sent and which act as guides therefor. Turning the gear 8 anti-clockwise as viewed, lowers the rack 2 and studs 6 and raises the rack 3 in unison, so unlocking the door (the heads of the studs then being aligned with enlargements of key hole slots in a keeper not shown) so that the door can be opened. Clockwise movement of the gear raises the racks 2 and 3 and the studs 6 to lock the door when it is in the closed position (the keeper is on the door frame). CLAIMS
1. Apparatus such as an espagnolette for locking a closure, comprising separate connectors for connection with locking bolts of the closure, a slidable locking means for engagement with a keeper, and means to throw and retract the locking means in order to lock and unlock the closure.
2. Apparatus according to Claim 1, the means to throw and retract comprising a toothed gear which engages with engagement means of the connectors, one of which carries the slidable locking means.
3. Apparatus according to Claim 2, the engagement means of each connector comprising a rack.
4. Apparatus according to Claim 2, the means to throw and retract comprising a toothed double gear means, one of which engages with engagement means of the connectors and the other of which engages with engagement means of the slidable locking means, whereby, on turning of the toothed double gear means the slidable locking means and the connectors are moved in unison.
5. Apparatus according to any preceding claim, the slidable locking means comprising a stud or studs, the or each of which has an enlarged head for engagement with a keeper which comprises a plate with one or more key-hole shaped slots for receiving the or each stud andin one pbsition locking the head.
6. Apparatus according to any preceding claim, the means to throw and retract being mounted in a housing which includes opposed plates each bearing a groove in which a respective connector is guided for reciprocation.
7. Apparatus for locking a closure, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawing.
8. A closure such as a casement closure or sliding closure, incorporating apparatus according to any preceding claim.
