Description
SPECIFICATION
Scabbler
The present invention relates to working of hard ground surfaces formed from concrete, stone or the like materials, in order to provide a key or roughened binding surface to which a finishing coat can be overlaid.
This invention has particular application to the laying of large surface areas such as in the construction of motorways, airport aprons and runways, car parks etc.
The usual term for this roughening surface treatment is "scabbling" and there are known means for effecting this treatment.
One of the means is a hand drawn apparatus comprising a pneumatically powered vibrating weighted unit provided with cutters on a ground face, and mounted on wheels.
A disadvantage of this apparatus is that in laying down of large surface areas many manhours are required to cover the surface, which results in considerable expense and lengthening of project time.
In addition the use of such units on inclined surfaces is extremely difficult due to their weight which cannot be supported by the average man. Thus the unit must be supported by ropes by at least one man to restrain slippage and guided across the slope by another.
An object of the present invention is to obviate or mitigate the aforesaid disadvantages.
According to the present invention there is provided apparatus for scabbling large areas of substantially planar hard ground comprising a tractor having a transmission system which allows continuous forward speeds of less than walking pace, and a plurality of scabbling units harnessed thereto.
Preferably three scabbling units are linked in a triangular array by a single reinforced top plate.
In the accompanying drawings:- Figure 1 shows a suitable reinforced top plate which for weight reasons totally replaces the normal top plate on each scabbling unit, which are represented by cuboids;
Figure 2 shows a plan view of the top plate shown in Fig. 1 with linkages fixed for attachment to a tractor;
Figure 3 shows a rear view of the scabbling units mounted together using the top plate as shown in Fig. 1; and
Figure 4 shows a side view of the scabbling units attached to a tractor.
In one embodiment of the invention apparatus for scabbling large areas of substantially planar hard ground such as a car park comprises a mine tractor 1 capable of maintaining a continuous low speed of less than or equal to walking pace so as to provide adequate time for the scabbling units to work the surface; and three scabbling units 2 joined together by a single reinforced top plate 3 and arranged in a triangular array such that the working surfaces 4 will treat marginally overlapping areas of ground surface. The units 2 are connected to a pneumatic power source not shown. The reinforced top plate 3 is used to harness the scabbling units 2 to the tractor 1 via pivotal linkages 5 so that the scabbling units 2 can be raised or lowered to break or make contact with the ground surface.Each unit 2 is mounted on wheels 6 to maintain the working surfaces 4 at the correct height and facilitate travel over the ground.
The mini tractor has a very high lateral stability and low centre of gravity due to the fact that the tractor has a wider than normal track. This has been achieved in this embodiment by welding additional rear wheels 7 onto the tractor so that it has four coaxial rear wheels in pairs on either side of the tractor.
This enables the working of inclined surfaces which are normally difficult to work due to the weight of the single hand-drawn unit.
The mini tractor provides a better source of traction than normal tractors because the transmission is such that speeds of walking pace and less can be continuously maintained without juddering or stalling occurring as would occur in trying to run a larger tractor at such low speeds. In addition the sheer weight of larger tractors coupled with the normal vibration of scabbling units makes it impossible to work on slopes as the tractor simply slides down the slope or topples over.
1. Apparatus for scabbling large areas of substantially planar hard ground comprising a tractor having a transmission system which allows continuous forward speeds of less than walking pace, and a plurality of scabbling units harnessed thereto.
2. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the plurality of scabbling units are joined together using a single reinforced top plate.
3. Apparatus according to claim 1 or 2 wherein the plurality of scabbling units are arranged in a triangular array.
4. Apparatus according to claim 3 wherein three scabbling units are used.
5. Apparatus according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the scabbling units are harnessed to the tractor by means of pivotal linkages for raising and lowering the units to break and make respectively contact with the ground surface.
6. Apparatus according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the tractor has a wide track.
7. Apparatus according to claim 6 wherein the tractor has four rear wheels mounted coaxially in pairs on either side of the tractor.
8. Apparatus according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the tractor is of the
