Abstract

211,320. Cooper, J. B. Jan. 23, 1923. Ladders.-A portable ladder comprises a wheeled frame 1, a pivoted ladder 9 and a gallows 15 to raise and lower the ladder into required position. The frame has adjustable corner struts 6 by which it is supported, these struts being locked by spring bolts 5. The ladder is pivoted on bolts 10 at the front of the carriage and is braced at the sides by members 11 and cross struts 12, the members 11 being also pivoted to the carriage. In order to ensure that the steps may be horizontal in any position of inclination, they are carried by links 29, Fig. 3, extending between the ladder sides 9 and parallel bars 30 which are hinged at 31 to the carriage frame. End extensions 9<1> and 30<1>, Fig. 3, may be used to extend the reach of the ladder. The gallows consists of a pivoted frame 14, 15, 16, secured to the upper end of the ladder by pivoted rods 18; it is adapted to be moved about its pivots to raise the ladder by ropes 24 worked from a winch 23. The bars 15 are hinged at their centres so that they may be collapsed when the ladder is resting on the carriage.
