Abstract

A wheel brake disc assembly comprises a divided or undivided brake ring (14) mounted on a hub (12) or wheel (11) of a rail vehicle and an intermediate piece (17), to which the brake ring (14) is fastened by means of a strip (16) clamped in a groove (18). The intermediate piece itself is mounted by means of screws (20) and/ or pins, tightening sleeves or similar, which extend parallel to and are arranged on a circle (25) concentric with the axis. Bores (19) for the screws (20) at the intermediate piece (17) have uniform circumferential spacing, the magnitude of which corresponds to the fourth to the tenth part of the circle (25) on which the screws are arranged. Securing means (24) prevents relative displacement between the brake ring (14) and intermediate piece (17). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A wheel brake disc assembly The present invention relates to a wheel brake disc assembly.
Numerous constructions have been proposed for the mounting of brake rings to a hub or wheel, but all of these possess disadvantages of one kind or another. Thus, in a construction described in DE-PS 15 30 234, a ring with clamping grooves is provided but has the disadvantage that, due to the forces that must be absorbed, the ring is too large and too heavy. Moreover, appreciable difficulties arise in centering. Similar disadvantages are present in the construction according to DE-AS 20 47 513, where the wheel tyre must be drilled in order to mount an intermediate mounting piece. In this case, a significant disadvantage is still present insofar as the relative movement between the brake ring and intermediate piece, because of the mounting of the same at the wheel tyre, reaches its maximum value, which is a particular disadvantage because the wear at the clamping surfaces becomes too great There is accordingly a need for a method of mounting a brake ring to a wheel or hub in which the disadvantages of the known constructions are not present and in which appreciable weight saving is possible so as to contribute to reduction in the unsprung mass of, for example, a rail vehicle.
According to the present invention there is provided a wheel brake disc assembly comprising annular brake disc means mounted on a wheel or wheel hub by mounting means, the mounting means being connected to the brake disc means by radially extending strip means engaged in groove means and by securing means arranged to resist relative displacement of the brake disc means and mounting means, and the mounting means being provided with a plurality of spaced apart bores receiving fastening elements which extend parallel to the wheel or hub axis and which are arranged on a circle concentric with said axis to fasten the mounting means to the wheel or hub, the spacing of the bores around the circle corresponding to substantially one fourth to one tenth of the circle.
In a preferred embodiment, the assembly comprises an intermediate piece mounting a divided wheel for a rail vehicle, the ring being fastened to the intermediate piece by means of a strip clamped in a clamping groove and the intermediate piece being mounted by means of screws and/or fit pins, tightening sleeves or similar, which are parallel to the axis and arranged on a circle lying concentrically with the axis. The intermediate piece possesses one of the clamping groove or strip, which extends radially outwards for the connection of the intermediate piece and brake ring. The bores for the screws or similar, which are parallel with the axis, at the intermediate piece have a concentric spacing, the magnitude of which corresponds to the fourth to the tenth part of the circle, on which the screws lie.The securing means can prevent relative displacement between the brake ring and intermediate piece in a known manner.
Advantageously, the intermediate piece, in the case of even-numbered division of the circle, is mounted alternately on one and the other side of the wheel or hub, wherein each screw takes care simultaneously of the fastening of a respective intermediate piece on one and on the other side of the wheel or the hub.
According to the loading of the brake, two or more intermediate pieces can be provided for the fastening of the brake ring to the wheel or hub. In that case, these intermediate pieces can be kept substantially lighter and the strips at the brake ring can be disposed as far as possible against the inner radius of the brake ring, whereby the relative movement between brake ring and intermediate piece can be reduced to the smallest possible amount. Consequently, the wear at the clamping surfaces is kept to a minimum.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be more particularly described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig.1 is a view of a brake ring mounted on a rail vehicle wheel, with the wheel disc partly broken away; and Fig. 2 is a diagram showing the two-sided arrangement of intermediate pieces of the brake ring mounting.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown in Fig. 1 a wheel 11 which is pressed in known manner buy a hub 12 onto an axle shaft 13. A brake ring 14is provided on its rear side with ventilation ribs 15 and clamping strips 16. For connection of the brake ring 14 to the wheel 11 there is provided an intermediate piece 17, which has a clamping groove 18 extending radially outwards and two bores 19 for fastening screws 20 extending parallel to the axis. The groove 18 has two clamping surfaces, between which the strip 16 is clamped. Provided at the base of the groove 18 is a bore 21, which extends radially and is aligned with a bore 22 in the strip 16.
Pressed into both of the bores 21 and 22 is a tightening sleeve 23, for example a split sleeve, which is secured against radial movement by a pin 24 extending substantially tangentially.
The bores 19 and the screws 20, which extend therein parallel to the axis, lie on a circle 25, wherein the spacing of the screws 20 one from the other is equal all round seen in concentric direction, namely one sixth of the circle 25. One of the two bores 19 can be formed as an elongate hole. The inner radius 26 of the intermediate piece 17 bears against the hub surface 27 concentric with the axis and bears on this.
The radial bore 22 in the strip 16 is enlarged to a slot 28 parallel to the axis on the side pointing towards the hub. Ventilation slots 34 are provided to assist cooling at the inside of the intermediate piece 17.
According to Fig. 2, the intermediate pieces 29 and 30 are arranged in such manner that three such intermediate pieces 29 are disposed on one side of the wheel and three such intermediate pieces 30 are disposed on the other side of the wheel disc between the intermediate pieces 29 with respect to the concentric direction. All six intermediate pieces 29 and 30 are held by only six screws 31, which extend parallel to the axis. This means that, in effect, six screws can be saved. This is only possible because the spacing of two bores in the intermediate pieces 29 and 30 amounts to exactly one sixth of the circle 32.
Due to the fact that one bore in each intermediate piece 17 is formed as elongate hole, it is ensured that no stresses can arise from expansion of the screw circle 25 in consequence of heating during braking.
Different arrangements are also possible, for example with two intermediate pieces on one side of the wheel disc or with four or five intermediate pieces.
A further stiffening of the construction, particularly in concentric direction, is obtained if the inner radius 26 of each intermediate piece bears on a surface, parallel to the axis, of the hub, the wheel, or the axle shaft.
