Abstract
210,914. Casey, V. H. Nov. 28, 1922. Spring wheels.-In a resilient wheel of the type having pneumatic cylinder and piston cushioning devices, each device is detachable, and comprises a cylinder 10 with transverse partition 11, and two pistons 13, 14, the former bearing in a scolloped recess in the tread 3, the latter being secured to the hub 4. The cylinder has a shoulder 21 bearing against shoulders 7 formed on one or both of two wheel discs 1, 2 secured to the hub and braced apart by bolts 5. The tread 3 is disposed between the discs. The transverse partition 11 and the piston ends within the cylinder are provided with valves 12, 17, 20, valve 12 being adjustable. The pistons also have air-holes 16, 19. A spring 24 is provided between the shoulder 21 of the cylinder and the head of piston 13. A spiral spring 25 may also be provided surrounding the device and extending between the hub and the shoulder 21 of the cylinder. In a modification, Fig. 3, an additional cylinder 29 is provided closed at its outer end and working as a piston between the main cylinder 10 and piston 14. The cylinder 29 has shoulders 32 bearing in recesses formed in a ring in the hub. The cushioning devices are housed, as shown, in the folds of a bent strip S riveted to the tread. Instead of bearing directly against the tread, the outer ends of pistons 13 may bear against blocks housed in recesses in the tread and urged radially inwards by springs. The tread may be formed of two layers of rubber, the outer layer 45 being more resilient than the inner layer 41, and may be reinforced by a metal . ring 42 to which rings 43 of angle section are riveted. The scolloped inner surface of the tread may be reinforced by a ring 44 of channel section.
