Abstract
219,098. Schultz, E. April 20, 1923. Spring wheels with continuous outer rigid ring and pneumatic and like hubs and cushions.-A resilient wheel comprises a number of cylinders 7 communicating with an annular casing 9 which surrounds but floats clear of the hub 1. A double piston works in each cylinder, and comprises a hollow main piston 11 fitting the cylinder 7, and a pumping piston 31 closed at both ends and working in the piston 11. A spring 35 tends to force the pistons apart. The outer heads of the cylinders 31 bear against corresponding concave portions 33 of a ring 34, which may be built up of sectional members strengthened by webs 39. The pistons 11 have flanges bearing against concave surfaces 6 formed in rings 5 held by the inturned edges of discs 2 secured to the hub. A rubber ring 25 is interposed between the inner ends of the pistons to cushion shocks. In use, the pistons 31 move outwards under action of the springs 35 and centrifugal force, drawing in air through ports 30 and a valve, 28 to the space between the pistons. As each piston comes round to the bottom of the wheel, it is driven inwards, forcing the air through a valve 19 into the casing 9. This process continues automatically until the air pressure in the casing 9 is sufficient to support the load. The casing 9 may be common to all the cylinders or may have partitions 40 to form a separate compartment for each cylinder.
