Abstract

The device comprises relatively movable parts (1, 1') adapted on relative movement in one direction to engage surfaces of the door or letter box as the case may be to hold the device in a blocking position in the aperture, and then on movement in the opposite direction to disengage from those surfaces to permit removal of the device, and an operating mechanism (6, 11, 23, 25, 29) for effecting said relative movement; the mechanism being manually operable by an operating member and being such, that when the device is inserted in the aperture from the inside of the door or letter box, the operating member is not accessible from the outside of the door or letter box. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Letter aperture blocking device The present invention relates to a device to block the aperture in a door or letter box through which mail is received.
It is an object of the present invention to provide such a device which can be manually operated to secure it in place in the aperture and to remove it therefrom at the will of the user.
There is provided by the present invention a device for blocking the letter aperture of a door or letter box, comprising rlatively movable parts adapted on relative movement in one direction to engage surfaces! of the door or letter box as the case may be to hold the device in a blocking position in the aperture, and then on movement in the opposite direction to disengage from those surfaces to permit removal of the device from the aperture, and an operating mechanism for effecting said relative movement; the mechanism being manually operable by an operating member and being such, that when the device is inserted in the aperture from the inside of the door or letter box as the case may be, the operating member is not accessible from the outside of the door or letter box as the case may be.
Material such as advertising leaflets, is usually delivered at times other than those of a postal delivery; and by means of the present invention, the user can prevent the delivery of such material. Further, he can use it to prevent noxious objects being pushed through the letter aperture.
The relatively movable members, in one presently preferred form of the invention, are in the form of relatively displaceable jaws; and the operating mechanism comprises a wedge member which can be entered between the jaws; the wedge member and the jaws being such that by continued displacement of the wedge member between the jaws in the direction of entry of the wedge member therebetween, the wedge member forces the jaws apart to cause them to engage on opposite sides of the letter aperture when the jaws are inserted thereinto; and then by return displacment, permit the jaws to be closed on one another.
The jaws may be set up on a bridging member so as to slide thereon; and the operating mechanism may comprise a manually operated screw device to permit displacement of the wedge member to be effected. The screw device comprises a screw-threaded bolt secured at one end of the wedge member and taken through a hole in the bridging member to receive on the remote side thereof a nut, preferably a butterfly nut. On rotation of the nut to draw the bolt through the hole in the bridging member in the direction towards said remote side of the bridging member, the wedge member is drawn towards the latter and forces the jaws apart. On rotation of the nut in the opposite direction, the bolt can be pushed in the opposite direction to displace the wedge member in the return direction and permit the jaws manually to be moved towards one another to permit disengagement from the sides of the letter aperture.
The present invention will now be described furthe'r, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a front elevation of a device according to the present invention; and Figure 2 shows a plan view of the device in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, the device comprises a part of jaws 1, 11 of block form, made in. this instance of wood, having jaw surfaces 3, 3' facing one another and inclined so as to define a converging pathway 5 between them. Each jaw at the narrow end of the pathway is secured to the bridging member 6 by wood screws 7, 7' passing through holes in the bridging member; the holes being in the form of slots to permit sliding of the jaws away from, and towards one another on the bridging piece. In this instance, the bridging piece consists of a metal plate.
Entered between the two jaws to lie in the converging pathway 5 is a wedge member 11, having sides 13, 13' of a complementary inclination to that of jaw surfaces 3, 3' respectively to permit those sides of the wedge member to slide on the surfaces 3; 31 of the jaws. To prevent displacement of the wedge in the direction normal to the plane containing the wedge member and the jaws, each of the inclined sides of the wedge member is formed with longitudinal beads 1 5, 1 5' respectively, which are received in complimentary recesses 17, 17' formed in the jaw members respectively.
The wedge member 11 has a hole passing longitudinally therethrough and receives in the hole a dome-headed bolt 23 the shank of which is screw-threaded. The bolt is secured in place in the wedge member by a locking nut 25 with the shank extending from the end surface. of the member facing the bridging member. The latter has a hole formed therein; and the shank of the bolt has a sufficient extension to extend through that hole to receive on the remote side 27 of the bridging member a nut 29, in this instance a butterfly nut. To prevent wear on the bridging member, a plain washer 30 is received on the shank of the bolt to lie between the butterfly nut and said remote side of the bridging member.
In operation of the illustrated device, the jaws at the narrow end thereof are inserted in the letter aperture (not shown) from the inside of the door or lefter box as the case may be with their outer faces 31, 311 respectively opposite the lateral sides of the aperture and with the wedge member positioned adjacent the narrow end of the jaws. The butterfly nut is then turned to draw the wedge member towards the bridging member and force the jaws apart by sliding on the bridging member until their surfaces 31, 311 make sufficient firm contact with the respective sides of the letter aperture to prevent forcible dislodgement of the device therefrom. The device thus blocks the letter aperture and when so positioned, prevents access from the outside of the door or the letter box to the wedge members operating mechanism constituted by the bolt and butterfly nut.
The device may then be removed by turning the butterfly nut in the opposite direction to permit the bolt to be pushed in the return direction and allow the jaws manually to be moved towards one another to release them from the letter aperture.
To prevent scuffing of the jaws and letter aperture, the outer faces 31, 311 of the jaws may be covered with resilient material 33 such as rubber.
The described embodiment may be modified by using a wedge member in the form of a disc. The bridging member may then be made resilient e.g. it may be made of strip metal, so that when the jaws are forced apart, the bridging member is flexed to set up a resilient bias tending to restore the jaws to their original position.

CLAiMS
1. A device for blocking the letter aperture of a door or letter box, comprising relatively movable parts adapted on relative movement in one direction to engage surfaces of the door or letter box as the case may be to hold the device in a blocking position in the aperture, and then on movement in the opposite direction to disengage from those surfaces to permit removal of the device from the aperture, and an operating mechanism for effecting said relative movement; the mechanism being manually operable by an operating member and being such, that when the device is inserted in the aperture from the inside of the door or letter box as the case may be, the operating member is not accessible from the outside of the door or letter box as the case may be.
2. A device according to claim 1 wherein the relatively movable members are in the form of relatively displaceable jaws; and the operating mechanism comprises a wedge member which can be entered between the jaws; the wedge member and the jaws being such that by continued displacement of the wedge member between the jaws in the direction of entry of the wedge member therebetween, the wedge member forces the jaws apart to cause them to engage on opposite sides of the letter aperture when the jaws are inserted thereinto; and then by return displacement, permit the jaws to be closed on one another.
