Abstract

The invention relates to a bearing member (1) for mounting, for example, a platen (4) of an office machine to a side wall (10) of the machine. The plastics bearing member has means (2) for receiving an axle (3) of the platen. A peripheral wedge shaped recess (9) receives a portion (16a, 16b and 16c) of a slot edge and two clamping arms (11, 12) each engage a respective side (20, 17a) of the open end of the slot (15) to secure the bearing member in position. A platen may be provided with two such bearing members, one on either end, and the resulting platen assembly can then be removed from the slots in the side walls of the machine by pressing the clamping arms of each bearing member together and lifting the platen assembly upwardly out of the slots. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Bearing members The present invention relates to bearing members for mounting axles to side walls of machines.
The bearing member of the present invention is particularly, but not exclusively, suitable for use in mounting a platen to the side wall of an office machine, for example a typewriter.
The invention provides a bearing member for mounting an axle to a side wall of a machine, said side wall having an edge which defines an open ended slot, the bearing member comprising means for accommodating an end of the axle to be mounted, a peripheral recess for receiving therein, in use, a portion of the slot edge, and two clamping arms, each arm engaging, in use, said slot edge adjacent and on a respective side of the open enJ of the slot.
In order that the invention may be well understood an embodiment thereof will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is an exploded view in perspective showing a platen, bearing member and side wall of a machine; and Figure 2 is a side view of the bearing member mounting the platen to the side wall of a machine.
The bearing member 1 has a generally cylindrical body having means comprising a central bore 2 for accommodating the end 3 of the axle of a platen 4. Turn knobs for the platen may be screwed or otherwise mounted in bores 5 in the axle after the bearing member has been fitted over the axle end 3.
Parallel semi-circular flanges 6 and 7 are disposed about the lower half of the cylindrical wall of the body to define a wedge-shaped peripheral recess 9.
Two clamping arms 11 and 12 extend outwardly from the upper half of the body. Arm 11 is provided with a shoulder 13. At least one of the clamping arms 12 is resilient. The two clamping arms may be urged apart by spring means 14.
An open ended slot 15, for receiving the ,bearing member 1, is formed in a side wall 10 of the machine to which the platen is to be mounted.
The slot 1 5 has a lower relatively narrow portion 1 6 and an upper wider portion 17. An inwardly directed projection 1 9 is formed on one side 1 8 of the slot edge adjacent the open end of the slot 1 5.
The projection 1 9 has a lower inclined edge surface 20.
To mount an axle to the side wall 10 the axle end 3 is accommodated in the bore 2 in the cylindrical body of the bearing member 1. The clamping arms 11 and 1 2 are then compressed together against the force of the spring means 14, if any, so that the bearing member may be lowered into slot 1 5. When in position as shown in Figure 2 a portion, 1 6a, 1 6b, 1 6c, of the edge of the slot 1 5 is received in the wedge shaped peripheral recess 9 in order to secure the lateral positioning of the bearing member 1 with respect to the side wall 10. The clamping arms 11 and 12 may then be released so that the resilient arm 12 engages the slot edge at a region 1 7a adjacent one side of the open end of slot 1 5.The shoulder 13 on arm 11 engages the lower inclined edge 20 of projection 19 to lock the bearing member and thus the platen in position.
It will be appreciated that the provision of clamping arms 11 and 12, which are in substantially the same plane as the side wall 10, for locking the bearing member in position avoids the disadvantage encountered with previously proposed locking devices, e.g. bolts, which had to lie in a plane parallel to the side wall and therefore caused a turning moment to be applied to the axle which could cause canting and a reduction in the ease of rotation of the platen. The abovedescribed bearing member is simple to use and construct for example by injection moulding a plastics material.
The bearing member described may be used in a wide variety of office machines. For example two such bearing members may be used at either end of a typewriter platen to mount it to side walls which, in the case of a moving paper carrier, will be the side walls of the carriage, or in the case of a stationary paper carrier, will be the side walls of the machine itself which may be integral with the base of the machine. In large typewriters or like office machines in which the platen represents a considerable mass it is desirable that the spring means 14 should be provided, whereas in smaller machines, if the material of which the bearing member is constructed is appropriately selected to produce sufficiently resilient clamping arms, the spring means 14 may be dispensed with.
1. A bearing member for mounting an axle to a side wall of a machine, said side wall having an edge which defines an open ended slot, the bearing member comprising means for accommodating an end of the axle to be mounted, a peripheral recess for receiving therein, in use, a portion of the slot edge, and two clamping arms, each arm engaging, in use, said slot edge adjacent and on a respective side of the open end of the slot.
2. A bearing member as claimed in claim 1, wherein one of the clamping arms is provided with a shoulder which, in use, engages an inwardly directed projection in the slot edge.
3. A bearing member as claimed in claim 1 or 2, further comprising a spring means for urging said clamping arms apart.
4. A bearing member as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, comprising plastics material.
