Abstract

210,758. Puening, F. Jan. 31, 1923, [Convention date]. Applying heat of combustion, methods of; bracings.-In a furnace or heating-apparatus in which a body of hot gases is passed alternately in opposite directions through a heating-chamber, fresh hot gases are added to the system through a by-pass flue so connected that the added gases are always delivered into a body of the older gases which has just passed through the heating-chamber. In the construction shown the hot gases are passed to and fro through the heating-chamber 2 by an oscillating piston 3 operating in a chamber 4, which is connected to the heating-chamber by side flues 24, the gases being evenly distributed by walls 26 having dampered perforations 27. Between the chambers 2, 4 is arranged a combustion chamber 30, connected by dampered ports 33 with a bypass flue 34, the ends of which open into the vertical flues 24. At each stroke of the piston a portion of the hot gases is forced through the by-pass flue and fresh combustion products mixed therewith are carried into the chamber 4 on the suction side of the piston. The chamber 4 is preferably divided into two compartments by the wall 20 and the combustion chamber 30 extends over a part only of the length of the furnace, the waste gases being exhausted from the heating. chamber through a port 45 at the end remote from the combustion chamber. The piston consists of a water-cooled pipe framework 11 covered by corrugated plates 17, and leakage of gas between the shaft 6 and the roof of the chamber 4 is prevented by a sealing-plate 21. The furnace is mounted in a framework consisting of horizontal and vertical channels 37, 38, inclined struts 39 and horizontal beams 40, 41, the latter of which form the skew-backs for the arch 23. In a modified form of apparatus in which a tubular liquidheater 57 is arranged in the heating-chamber, the piston 60 is mounted to reciprocate vertically, and the by-pass flue 98 is situated at one side of the piston chambers. The upper and lower flues 85, 86 connecting the piston chamber with the end chambers of the heater have walls 88, 90 which are inclined to distribute the hot gases evenly over the cross-section of the heating-chamber. The piston is covered with heat-insulating material 64, and is fitted internally with a partition 67, beneath which cooling-water is supplied by a pipe 69, the exhaust being effected through the annular space between this pipe and the piston rod. The waste hot gases may be withdrawn continuously through a flue connection 102 at the middle of the. length of the heating-chamber, or alternately through connections opening from the end chambers. Specifications 208,170 and 210,068 are referred to.
