Abstract

The moulding and core sand compositions of the invention comprise in addition to sand and sodium silicate and normally enough water to make the composition liquid, also a liquid organic hardener ester of acetic acid and a polyalcohol and a mixture of surface active frothing agents.

Description

SPECIFICATION Moulding and core sand compositions The present invention provides moulding and core sand compositions containing a binder in a form of sodium silicate and an organic hardener in a form of an ester of an organic acid and a polyalcohol.
Currently used moulding and core sands containing a binder in the form of sodium silicate are hardened with powdered materials whose basic component is calcium gamma-ortho-silicate. A liquid consistency for such compositions is attained by an addition of surface-active agents, usually anionic.
One of the basic drawbacks of the currently used sands is their unsatisfactory knock-out properties, which requires an additional application of loosening materials which are not always effective and which complicate the technological process. Apart from impeded knock-out properties, which requires labour-consuming procedures at dressing of castings, during the application of loose hardeners according to the hitherto applied technology, quick dusting at moulding stands occurs, which is a hazard to the servicing personnel's health. In order to limit or eliminate the aforesaid drawbacks caused by loose hardeners, it has been proposed to apply liquid hardeners. However, because of the water-repellent properties of organic hardeners, under the effect thereof, a decay of the frothing power occurs in the frothers hitherto applied for obtaining of the liquidity of moulding sands.
For example, a moulding sand containing sodium butylnaphthalenesulfonate as a frother and a liquid hardener in a form of a glycol diacetate does not show liquidity (castability) because the hydrophobic polyalcohol acetate causes supression of froth. Therefore, organic hardeners of the type of esters of acetic acid and polyalcohols have so far found an application only for loose moulding and core sands (see Polish Patent application No. P-i 94640). Although in the tests carried out on the application of surface-active agents such as sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate or non-ionic surface-active agents of an increased frothing power and a high froth stability in the medium of sodium sodium silicate with an addition of organic hardeners of the type of acetates of glycols, sands of good liquidity and strength were obtained, such sands had a very low permeability after hardening.
It has now been found that only the application of a multi-component mixture of surface-active agents containing at the same time a frothing agent characterized by quick extinguishing of froth of the type of sodium butylnaphthalenesulfonate and a frothing agent of an increased frothing power, ensures obtaining of sands of a long life, very good liquidity, high strength, and very good permeability. In these cases the problem of the selection of a mixture of detergents becomes of a particular importance.
The moulding and core sand composition of the invention, comprises quartz sand, sodium silicate, a liquid hardener ester of acetic acid and a polyalcohoi in an amount of 0.1-2 parts by weight and a mixture of surface-active frothing agents, such as sodium butylnaphthalenesulfonate preferably in an amount of 0.2-1.0 parts by weight, with an addition of strongly frothing detergents in an amount 0.1-1.0 parts by weight, preferably as alkyl sulfate, alkylaryl sulfonate, ethoxyalkyl sulfate, sulfate of an unsaturated alcohol, sulfate of an unsaturated ethoxy-alcohol, sulfate of an ethoxylated alkylphenol, or a non-ionic surface-active agent. Such compositions contain also when used, enough water to make them liquid.
The liquid moulding sand according to the invention contains as additional detergents a mixture of sulfonates, alkyl- and ethoxy-alkyl sulfates, sulfates of unsaturated alcohols and of unsaturated ethoxy-alcohols, and non-ionic surface-active agents.
In the compositions of the invention the liquid organic hardeners advantageously shorten the time of binding, and the selection of detergent mixtures improves the properties and castability of moulding and core sands so as to render them useful for the production of casting moulds and cores.
Examples of liquid moulding and core sands of the invention and the properties are as follows: Example 1 composition of the sand: quartz sand 100 parts by weight sodium silicate (water glass) 5 parts by weight water 2 parts by weight ethylene glycol diacetate 0.5 parts by weight frothing agents: sodium butylnaphthalenesulfonate 0.5 parts by weight sodium lauryl sulfate 0.4 parts by weight properties of the sand: castability 20 cm life 5 minutes binding time 30 minutes compressive strength 10-8MPa after 1 hr 5 permeability lO-Bm4/Nm after 24 hrs 17 after 1 hr 600 Example II composition of the sand: quartz sand 100 parts by weight sodium silicate 5 parts by weight water 2 parts by weight ethylene glycol diacetate 0.5 parts by weight frothing agents:: sodium butylnaphthalenesulfonate 0.5 parts by weight sodium lauryl-ethoxy-sulfate 0.2 parts by weight sodium lauryl sulfate 0.2 parts by weight properties of the sand: castability 20 cm life 7 minutes binding time 35 minutes compressive strength 10-1 MPa after 1 hr 6 after 24 hrs 18 permeability 10-8m4/Ns after 1 hr 540 after 24 hrs 750 Example Ill composition of the sand: quartz sand 100 parts by weight sodium silicate 5 parts by weight water 2 parts by weight ethylene glycol diacetate 0.5 parts by weight frothing agents: sodium butylnaphthalenesulfonate 0.5 parts by weight sulfates of ethoxylated alkylphenols 0.2 parts by weight properties of the sand:: castability 18 cm life 6 min binding time 35 min compressive strength 10-1MPa after 1 hr 6 permeability 1 O-8m4/Nm after 24 hrs 1 8 Example IV composition of the sand: quartz sand 100 parts by weight sodium silicate 5 parts by weight water 2 parts by weight ethylene glycol diacetate 0.5 parts by weight frothing agents: sodium butylnaphthalenesulfonate 0.5 parts by weight ethoxylated alkylphenols 0.1 parts by weight sodium alkylbenzenesulfonate 0.1 parts by weight sodium alkylsulfate 0.2 parts by weight properties of the sand: : castability 20 cm life 5 min binding time 30 min compressive strength 10-1MPa after 1 hr 4 after 24 hrs 16 permeability 1 O-8m4/Ns 300 after 1 hr 650 after 24 hrs Replacement of loose inorganic hardeners by organic hardeners improves considerably the knock-out properties after firing. For instance, the work of knocking-out fired liquid self-hardening sands with an inorganic hardener is from 22 to 28 J, whereas in case of liquid sands with an organic hardener it is reduced to 4 to 14 J.
