Description

SPECIFICATION A single wheel drive unit for commercial vehicles The invention relates to single-wheel drive units for commercial vehicles of the kind wherein the prime mover is an hydraulic motor. Particularly, the invention relates to such units in which a drive shaft coupled to the motor extends within an inner body, and through a gearing drives an outer housing forming the wheel hub and rotatably mounted on the inner body.
The aim of the invention is to create a compact and space-saving single-wheel drive unit, which makes it possible to reduce the weight of the wheel hub drive. At the same time a simplified assembly is sought and by reducing the number of drive parts maintenance can be facilitated. To these ends, a drive unit is provided in accordance with the invention which comprises an hydraulic motor fixedly connected to an inner body upon which an outer housing forming the wheel hub is rotatably mounted by means of at least one bearing, of which bearing the inner race is formed on the inner body and the outer race is formed on the outer housing; a drive shaft coupled to the motor and extending within the inner body; and a gear train coupling the drive shaft to the outer housing, the unit being closed around the end remote from the motor by a cover plate integral with the outer housing, and at the other end by a sliding seal disposed between the outer housing and inner body.
In preferred embodiments of the invention, the gear train is epicyclic with a planet wheel thereof mounted in a wall of the inner body. The planet wheel or wheels can be a stepped gear to provide different ratios. This arrangement enables the gear ratio to be selected from a very broad range without complicating the construction to any great extent which also may remain compact.
An hydrostatic-mechanical supplementary drive for motor vehicles, in particular tractors, is known from German Patent No: 18 04 779. The arrangement described therein has a complex drive train and requires a relatively large housing, because an epicyclic gear is used which is arranged in a separate housing. Another hydrostatic motor is described in German Patent Application No: P 30 15 818.0, and a singlewheel drive for processing machines is disclosed in German Patent Application No: 27 44 977.
Compared with these known drives, the drive according to the invention is substantially more simple and compact. Through the reduced number of components, assembly and maintenance are simplified. By eliminating the outer and inner races of the ball and roller bearings, the whole drive can be constructed with a smaller diameter. Further, the preferred mounting of an epicyclic planet gear in the inner body enables a shortening of the drive in the direction of the longitudinal axis. Both space and weight reductions can be achieved.
In another preferred feature the inner body takes the form of an open ended container closed at its end remote from the hydraulic motor, the gear train passing through the wall thereof. Means may also be provided for limiting the axial movement of the drive shaft from the motor. Such means are normally mounted in the inner body and may comprise a projection from the closed end of the inner body.
Weight and space savings are achieved particularly in units of the invention by the compact complementary design of the outer housing and inner body, which also form the outer and inner races of the bearing of the hub. This design can incorporate the other features discussed herein by mounting various components in or on one of the major parts. This permits a step by step construction with a minimum of complicated assembly stages.
Apart from simplified assembly and maintenance, through the economizing on weight on the drive unit, the payload can be increased accordingly. Furthermore, through the drive unit according to the invention, the unsprung matter in the drive gear is reduced.
The invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows in partial cross-section a preferred embodiment thereof.
As shown in the drawing, an hydraulic motor is attached with the aid of bolts 1 3 on a flange 11 arranged on an inner body 6. The flange 11 arranged on the inner body 6 also serves as a connection plate for the connection of the drive unit to the framework or to steering components of the vehicle. The inner body 6 is constructed generally in the form of a tubular container open on the driving side nearest the motor 1, and in which a drive shaft 2 carrying a drive gear 2a is rotatably arranged. A projection 9 is arranged on the inner side of the base of the inner body 6, to limit relative axial movement between the drive shaft 2 and the inner body 6. On the inner body 6 an outer housing 5 forming the hub is supported by means of ball bearings 10.The inner race for these ball bearings 10 is formed on the cylindrical outer surface of the inner body 6, whilst the outer race is formed on the inner surface of the outer housing 5.
A step planet gear 8, the axis of which runs parallel to the axis of the drive shaft 2, is rotatably supported in friction bearings 3 in the wall of the inner body 6. In the embodiment described, the step planet 8 has a bore, through which a journal 14 is received in form-locking connection therewith. The step planet 8 meshes on the one hand with the drive gear 2a and on the other hand with inward facing teeth on a gear 4 fastened by means of bolts on the front face of the outer housing 5. Drive is transmitted through the gears 2a, 8, and 4 from the drive shaft 2 to the hub 5, which in use will carry a wheel rim, not shown.
On the inner side of the outer housing 5 a recess is provided, which receives a sealing ring 7.
By this means, one end of the drive unit is sealed off. In the example shown, the internal gear 4 has a cover 12, and together they form a locking plate at the other end of the outer housing 5, perpendicular to the axis of the drive shaft to seal the other end of the drive unit.
The drive unit may also incorporate a service brake of which one member is fastened to the outer housing 5 and another member is fixed relative to the inner body 6.
