Bottles, jars, &c., washing.-The bottles, jars, &c. are drawn in between revolving internal and external brushes and discharged therefrom into a rinsing machine by reciprocating heel brushes. A tank 1 partly filled with water contains the rotary external brushes 3, and mounted to slide vertically therein is a bracket 10 with cradles 11 upon which bottles 12 are placed when the bracket is in its lowest position A. Heel brushes 9 depending from a cross-head 24 slidable in a guide 25 then pass over the bottles into the position X, the cross-head 24 being reciprocated b connecting-rod 26, lever 27, and cam 28. Revolving internal brushes 40 are simultaneously brought outward, being carried by a cross-head 37 sliding on the guide 25 and reciprocated by connecting-rod 52, lever 51, and cam 50. The drive for these brushes is by a square shaft 44 adapted to slide through the gear-box 42. The bracket 40 is then raised to the position A<1> by levers 13, 16, 18 and rim 19 and the heel brushes move inwards, pushing the bottles on to the external brushes 3 and over the internal brushes 40, the bottles being centred by engaging socket members 48 fixed to cross-heads 47 slidable on a guide 46 carried by the cross-head 37. These socket members are moved back to the feed end of the machine with the heel brushes by a rod 49, but are free to be pushed forward by the bottles, the rod 49 then sliding through the cross-head 24. The heel brushes remain stationary at the position X' while the bottles, pressed upon the brushes by rollers 23<a>, are brushed, the internal brushes revolving faster than the external brushes so that the bottles are rotated. When the forward movement is resumed the internal brushes travel faster than the heel brushes so that when the bottles arrive in the position for discharge the internal brushes are withdrawn, the sockets 48, however, still engage the bottles. The final movement of the heel brushes pushes the bottles on to cradles 30 which, as soon as the sockets are withdrawn, are tilted by a rocking-lever 34 engaging a cam 35 on the cross-head 37, so as to discharge the bottles into cups 31 of a rinsing machine or other receiving device.
