Abstract

A threshold sealing device comprises: a first element (8) held fast to the exterior face of a door (1) adjacent its bottom; a sealing element (11) hinged to the first element, projecting forwardly and biased upwardly; an operating element (9) connected to the sealing element; and an actuating member (3, 4) fixed at the threshold of the door. Closing the door brings the operating element (9) into engagement with the actuating member (3, 4) to cause the sealing element (11) to be hinged downwardly to form a seal at the threshold of the door. Preferably the sealing element (11) engages with the actuating member (3, 4) to form the seal on closing the door. Also preferably the operating element (9) itself sealingly engages with the actuating member (3, 4) when the door is closed to form an additional seal at the threshold of the door. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Threshold sealing device The present invention relates to a threshold sealing device i.e. a device for providing a seal between the bottom of a door hinged about a substantially vertical axis and the threshold of the door.
Various threshold sealing devices are known and comprise a resilient element carried by the door or a resiliant element fixed at the threshold of the door and which effect a seal between the door and the threshold when the door is closed. The seal is desired in order to prevent draughts and water (e.g. rain) passing under the door.
The present invention aims to provide an improved threshold sealing device.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a threshold sealing device comprising: a first element for being held fast to the exterior face of a door adjacent to the bottom thereof; a sealing element hinged relative to the first element, projecting forwardly therefrom and biased upwardly; an operating element also hinged relative to the first element and connected to the sealing element; and an actuating member for fixing at the threshold of the door, closing of the door bringing the operating element into engagement with the actuating member to cause the sealing element to be hinged downwardly to form a seal at the threshold of the door.
Preferably the sealing element engages with the actuating member to form the seal on closing of the door.
Preferably the operating element itself sealingly engages the bar when the door is closed to form an additional seal at the threshold of the door.
The operating element is also preferably of resilient material.
The resilient material of the sealing element and/or the operating element preferably provides the upward bias of the sealing element.
The sealing element and the operating element may be formed integrally.
The threshold sealing device may further comprise a holder for being attached to the door and holding the first element. The holder may comprise a weather deflector, that is an element providing a surface sloping downwardly and away from the door, to deflect rain running down the door away from the door.
The invention is further described below by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein:~ Figure 1 is a vertical section through the lower portion of a door provided with a threshold sealing device according to the invention, the door being shown slightly open; and Figure 2 is similar to Figure 1 but shows the door closed.
Referring to the drawings, a door 1 is conventionally mounted in a door frame (not shown) by means of hinges (not shown) for movement about a substantially vertical axis. The direction of opening of the door is indicated by arrow A. When the door is closed, the bottom of the door abuts a water bar 2 and the side margins of the outer face 1' of the door abut stops (not shown) integral with or planted on the door frame.
A threshold sealing device comprises a batten 3, conveniently of PVC, fixed in a position adjacent the bottom of the door 1, a rigid threshold strip 4, conveniently of aluminium, attached to the batten, an aluminium holder 5 secured to the outer face of the door, and a resilient member 6 retained by the holder. The batten 3 and the strip 4 constitute a threshold bar or strip.
The holder 5 is formed with a weather deflector 7, which provides a surface 7a sloping downwardly and away from the door 1 to deflect rain running down the door away from the door and the resilient member 6.
The holder 5 has a channel 16, the mouth of which is partially closed by lips 1 6a. The resilient element 6 comprising a first element 8 having a bulbous root portion 8a held captive in the channel 1 6 by the lips of the channel. The element 8 also has a portion (not referenced) extending through the mouth of the holder and stabilizing ribs 8b and 8c external to the holder. The root portion 8a is a loose sliding fit in the channel 16 for ease of assembly of holder and the resilient element 6.
The ribs 8b and 8c act on the holder to assist in holding the root portion 8a firmly in the channel.
The resilient member 6 further comprises a heel or operating element 9 hinged to the first element 8 by a linking or intermediate portion 10 and a sealing element 11 in the form of a wide blade projecting forwardly and downwardly from the operating element.
The linking portion 10 serves to bias the operating element 9 and the sealing element 11 upwardly to the position shown in Figure 1 when the door is open.
To prevent any rain which penetrates between the door 1 and the rear face of the holder 4 running down behind the sealing element, the rib 8c of the resilient element 6 is of sufficient width to press against the door and form a seal with the door.
When the door is closed, as shown in Figure 2, the operating element 9 engages the batten 3 and thereby hinges towards the door causing the sealing element 11 to descend, the free edge portion of the sealing element 11 engaging the strip 6. Thus both the sealing element 11 and the operating element 9 form respective seals, at regions 14 and 15 respectively, with the threshold strip 4.
The reference numerals in the appended claims are for the purpose of assisting in understanding the claims are are not to be taken as limiting the scope of the invention as defined by the claims.
