Description
SEALING BLADE FOR USE IN A WEATHER EXCLUDER
This invention relates to a sealing blade for use in a weather excluder for doors or windows such that the sealing blade is engaged and deflected sideways by engagement with an edge of the door or window upon closure of the latter to form a seal against the said edge.
Several examples of a weather excluder of the above kind are described in British Patent
Specification Nos. 2046335, 2049770 and 2102868.
A disadvantage of the use of a resilient sealing blade of the known weather excluders is that whereas closure of the door or window proceeds relatively smoothly with little friction, when the door or window is opened the edge of the latter frictionally grips the free end of the forwardly inclined blade so that the blade is forced to buckle rearwardly to permit the opening door or window to continue in its passage across the blade. This provides a severe wrench to the blade, and considerable resistance to opening can be felt. Furthermore, such wrenching substantially shortens the life of the blade, in particular by placing excessive strain at the region between the root portion in the groove and the blade proper.
A further disadvantage of the resilient sealing blade of known weather excluders is that the blades are adversely affected by heavy foot traffic and require to be replaced at regular intervals in order to ensure efficient working of the weather excluder.
It has also been found in practice that due to the shape of the known resilient sealing blades and to the use of a one grade material one is in general working with a maximum tolerance of about 4 mm.
The present invention is directed towards overcoming the stated disadvantages of the known constructions of resilient sealing blades for use with weather excluders and in particular to produce a sealing blade which provides a high range of tolerance, i.e. 12 mm.
The present invention provides a sealing blade for use in a weather excluder for a door or window, the sealing blade being mounted in and projecting from a groove provided in the weather excluder such that the sealing blade is engaged and deflected sideways by engagement with an edge of the door or window upon closure of the door or window to form a seal against the said edge, wherein the sealing blade has a root portion accommodated in the groove, a first portion adjacent the groove and a flexible second portion secured to or integral with the free end of the first portion remote from the groove, the first portion adjacent the groove being inclined in a direction complementary to door or window closure and the second portion being substantially vertical when the door or window is open and substantially horizontal and in contact with the underside of the door or window when the door or window is closed.
Preferably the sealing blade has a root portion which is movable within the groove such that the root portion moves in a direction complementary to door or window closure when the door or window is closed and returns to a rest position when the door or window is opened. Such movement within the groove gives a greater degree of flexibility and distributes the pressure on the sealing blade more evenly thus removing the excessive strain at the region between the root portion and the first portion of the blade adjacent the root portion.
The root portion preferably moves at an angle in a direction complementary to door or window closure such that the root portion partially moves from the floor of the groove when the door or window is closed and returns to a rest position when the door or window is opened.
Preferably, also, the blade includes a pair of lateral flanges extending over the outer edges of the groove. The flanges extend loosely over the edges of the groove to allow movement of the root portion within the groove as necessary. The flanges also maintain the root portion within the groove as required. The flanges also provide additional protection for the groove from water and dirt which may lodge in the groove if unprotected.
The first portion of the sealing blade may preferably be flexible. In such cases, the root portion may be held tightly within the groove of the weather excluder, thus on contact with the door or window a part of the first portion contacts the undersurface of the door or window providing a seal and as the door or window is closed further, the second portion contacts the undersurface of the door or window providing an additional seal.
Alternatively, the root portion may be movable within the groove of the weather excluder in addition to the first portion being composed of a flexible material, thus giving a seal which causes less friction or drag as the door or window is opened.
Preferably the first portion of the blade is curved in a direction complementary to door or window closure.
The flexible second portion is preferably provided with an additional sealing means on the free end remote from the first portion of the blade, the sealing means being in contact with the underside of the door or window when the door or window is closed.
This provides a seal between the underside of the door and the additional sealing means in addition to the seal provided by the first portion of the blade and the door or window and the seal provided by the flexible second portion and the door or window.
Preferably the additional sealing means is a spherical cap.
The root portion of the sealing blade is preferably formed of an EPDM (ethylenepolypropylene di-monomer) hard material and the flexible second portion is formed of an EPDM soft or flexible material.
Preferably, also, the EPDM hard material is a 70-75 shorehard A material while the EPDM soft material is a 50-55 shorehard A material.
The invention will be understood from the following description of an embodiment thereof given by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view of a sealing
blade according to the present invention;
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view of an
embodiment of the invention with the
resilient sealing blade in position in
the groove of a weather excluder;
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view of the excluder
of Figure 2 with the door in a half
closed position; and
Figure 4 is a cross-sectional view of the excluder
of Figure 2 with the door in a closed
position.
Referring to Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings the resilient sealing blade comprises a root portion 10, a substantially arcuate first portion 11 and a flexible second portion 12. The root portion 10 has a pair of lateral flanges 13 and 14. The root portion 10, the lateral flanges 13 and 14 and the arcuate first portion 11 is formed of an EPDM (ethylenepolypropylene di-monomer) hard material which is a 70-75 Shorehard A material, while the flexible second portion 12 is formed integral with. the arcuate first portion 11 but from an EPDM soft material which is a 50-55 Shorehard A material. The end of the flexible second portion 12 remote from the first portion 11 has an additional sealing means in the form of a spherical cap.
Referring to Figures 1-3 of the accompanying drawings an aluminium weather excluder indicated generally at 15 is provided with an elongate groove 16 at the in use rear end thereof. The root portion 10 of the sealing blade is securely accommodated within the groove 16 which is of generally complementary shape to said root portion 10 with the lateral flanges 13 and 14 of the sealing blade extending laterally over the outer edges of the restricted opening of the groove 16. The lateral flanges 13 and 14 maintain the root portion 10 within the groove 16 and protect the groove 16 from dirt and/or water penetration.
When a door 18 is closed the leading edge 17 of the door, moving in the direction indicated by arrow A, generally engages the arcuate portion 11 of the sealing blade to deform the blade by deflecting sideways in the forward direction of the door both the said arcuate portion 11 and the flexible blade 12 thereby causing the root portion 10 to move at an angle within the groove 16 allowing greater flexibility of movement of the arcuate portion 11 and the flexible blade 12. The deflected flexible blade 12 is deformed to assume essentially an extension of the arcuate portion 11, with a part of said flexible blade 12, the spherical cap thereon and a part of said arcuate portion engaging the bottom surface of the door 18 to provide a triple seal against wind and/or water penetration.
When the door 18 is opened in the direction of arrow B of Figure 4, the flexible blade 12 and spherical cap thereon will travel back with the bottom edge of the door 18 and, accordingly, cause that portion of the arcuate portion 11 also in engagement with the bottom edge of the door 18 to lessen its sealing pressure since said root portion 10 is forced downward within the groove 16. This action of the resilient sealing blade during the door opening sequence allows opening of the door 18 in an easy manner and without any undue friction, drag and/or counter pressure.
While the above embodiment of the invention has been described for the case where the leading edge 17 of the door 18 in a door closing sequence engages the upper region of the arcuate portion 11, it will be appreciated that the invention will work over a wide range of engagement between the leading edge 17 of the door 18 and the sealing blade 11, 12. This allows a high level of tolerance in the fitting of the weather excluder, which in turn means greater ease of fitting and less expense.
The resilient sealing blade of the present invention is as described above formed from two materials, one a hard EPDM and the second a soft EPDM.
This greatly enhances in use the life of the sealing blade in that the conventional heavy foot traffic does not to any great extent adversely affect the life of the sealing blade which does not, therefore, have to be replaced at regular intervals. This advantage is due primarily to the use in the sealing blade of the hard
EPDM.
