Description

(54) IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO FORMING SEALS BETWEEN TWO WINDOW FRAME SECTIONS (71) We, WAVIN B.V., a Dutch Corporate body of 251 Handellaan, Zwolle, The Netherlands, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- This invention relates to forming seals between two window frame sections when they are adjacent in a window closed condition.
The invention provides a sealing strip of elastic material for forming a seal between a first window frame section, which is provided with a longitudinally extending recess having a restricted opening spaced from an edge of the frame section, and a second window frame section when the two sections are adjacent in a closed window condition, said strip comprising a fstening projection configured to snap-fit into the recess, a clamping lip extending in the same direction as the projection for clampingly engaging said edge of the first frame section when the projection is snapfitted in said recess, and a sealing lip for sealingly engaging said second frame section when said projection is so snap-fitted and said sections are in the closed window condition.
The invention also includes a first window frame section and a second window frame section, which sections are adjacent in a closed window condition, said first section being provided with a longitudinally extending recess having a restricted opening spaced from an edge of the first frame, and a sealing strip as defined in the preceding paragraph, the fastening projection of which is snapfitted in said recess, the clamping lip clampingly engaging said edge of the first frame member, and the sealing lip sealingly engaging the second frame section when said sections are in the window closed condition.
In order that the invention may be well understood, an embodiment thereof, which is given by way of example only, will now be described, reference being had to the accompanying drawing which is a fragmentary cross-section of a window frame.
Referring to the drawing, there are shown two sections 4 and 8 of a window frame in a closed condition. The section 4 is shown in phantom line and forms an abutment stop for the section 8 which is fitted to one edge of a window pane (not shown) which extends vertically with respect to the section 8 as viewed in the drawing in a plane which is perpendicular to the plane of the drawing. The other edges of the pane have respective window frame sections fitted to them and the framed window pane is mounted for pivotal movement from the illustrated window closed condition to open the window, the section 8 moving away from the section 4 during such opening.
The section 8 is formed of plastics and is provided with a longitudinally extending recess 7 having a restricted opening spaced from an edge 9 of the section 8 which is disposed opposite the section 4 in the window closed condition. A sealing strip 1 of elastic material having a substantially uniform crosssection is fitted to the section 8 for forming a seal between the sections 4 and 8 when they are in the window closed condition. The strip 1 is formed of a plastics material and comprises a fastening projection 2, shown as having an arrow-shape cross section, configured to snap-fit into the recess 7, as illustrated. The strip 1 also comprises a clamping lip 5 which extends in the same direction as the projection 2 to clampingly engage the edge 9 of the section 8. As will be noted from the drawing the clamping lip 5 is spaced from the section 4 when the sections 4 and 8 are in the window closed condition. It will be appreciated that the strip 1 is secured to the section 8 not only by being snap-fitted thereto but also by the clamping action of the lip 5 against the edge 9.
The strip 1 further comprises a sealing lip 3 which sealingly engages the section 4 when the sections 4 and 8 are in the window closed condition in which condition the sealing lip is deflected from its undeflected position, which is shown in full line in the drawing, to a deflected position, shown in phantom line and indicated by reference 3a, by engagement with the section 4. The lip 3 extends in a direction opposite to the direction in which the projection 2 and lip 5 extend, that is generally downwardly rather than upwardly as viewed in the drawing.
The fastening projection 2, clamping lip 5 and sealing lip 3 all extend from a body portion of the strip 1, the body portion adjoining the sealing and clamping lips 3, 5 at a region lb which is thinner than the region la of the body portion from which the projection 2 extends. Deflection of the sealing lip 3 is assisted by the provision of this thinner region lb of the body portion and in particular by the merging of the lip 3 with the body portion through a curved recess 27 at the region lb on the side of the body portion remote from the projection 2.
The surface of the region la of the body portion is provided with a groove 6 which is aligned with the projection. The groove 6 is used during fitting of the strip 1 to the section 8, a roller is run along the groove 6 to apply pressure to the projection 2 to snap-fit the projection into the recess 7.
A particular advantage of the strip illustrated is that the sealing lip 3 engages only the section 4 when the sections 4 and 8 are in a window closed condition-it does not have to sealingly engage both sections to provide the seal therebetween.
It is to be understood, that whilst only one fastening projection 2 has been shown in the embodiment, the strip 1 could be provided with more than one fastening projection, each of which would be snap-fitted into a respective recess in the section to which the strip is fitted.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A sealing strip of elastic material for forming a seal between a first window frame section, which is provided with a longitudinally extending recess having a restricted opening spaced from an edge of the frame section, and a second window frame section when the two sections are adjacent in a closed window condition, said strip comprising a fastening projection configured to snap-fit into the recess, a clamping lip extending in the same direction as the projection for clampingly engaging said edge of the first frame section when the projection is snapfitted in said recess, and a sealing lip for sealingly engaging said second frame section when said projection is so snap-fitted and said sections are in the closed window condition.
2. A strip as claimed in claim 1, wherein the sealing lip extends in a direction opposite to the direction in which the clamping lip and fastening projection extend.
3. A strip as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein said fastening projection, clamping lip and sealing lip extend from a body portion.
4. A strip as claimed in claim 3, wherein the surface of the body portion remote from said projection is provided with a groove which is aligned with said projection for receiving a roller for applying pressure to said projection for snap-fitting said projection into said recess.
5. A strip as claimed in claim 3 or 4, wherein the body portion adjoins the sealing and clamping lips at a region which is thinner than the region from which the projection extends.
6. A strip as claimed in claim 5, wherein the sealing lip merges with the body portion through a curved recess at said thinner region of the body portion which assists deflection of said sealing lip when said sealing lip engages said second frame section in use.
7. A strip as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein said projection has an arrow-shape cross-section.
8. A window frame comprising a first window frame section and a second window frame section, which sections are adjacent in a closed window condition, said first section being provided with a longitudinally extending recess having a restricted opening spaced from an edge of the first frame, and a sealing strip as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, the fastening projection of which is snap-fitted in said recess, the clamping lip clampingly engaging said edge of the first frame member, and the sealing lip sealingly engaging the second frame section when said sections are in the window closed condition.
9. A sealing strip for forming a seal between two window frame sections when they are adjacent in a window closed condition, which strip is substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
