Abstract

210,400. James, R. W., (Remington Typewriter Co.). Nov. 12, 1923. Folding machines; shift-key actions; key locks.-A device comprising a lever actuated by a collapsable part of the machine, is provided for releasing the shift-locking key, and thereby permitting the shiftable member to return to the normal position, when the machine is collapsed; by ensuring the return of the shiftable member, the device prevents the machine from being damaged by the act of closing the cover. The machine shown in the Figure comprises (1) a verticallymovable frame 28, described in Specification 159,705, for raising and collapsing the type-levers 3, (2) a horizontally-shiftable carriage-bed 41 connected to an arm 61 on a rock-shaft 60 having arms 59 engaged by shift-key levers 54, (3) a locking-key lever 68 pivoted on one of the key-levers 54 and having a lug 70 for engaging a plate 78, and (4) a cover 81, adapted to be turned upwards on lugs 82, and having blocks 84 for engaging projections 85 on the carriage 50. The releasing- device consists of a lever 86, pivoted at 89 to the framework 2, and having a finger 91 adapted to engage a lug 75 on the locking-lever 68, and a finger 93 in the path of a pin 94 on one of the operating-links 26 for the frame 28. A guideyoke 92 on the lever 86 engages one of the keylevers 54. When the frame is depressed to collapse the type-levers, the pin rocks the lever 86, and if the lever 68 is locked, it is released, and then raised by a spring 72, the platen-carriage being thereupon restored by means of a spring 51 to the normal position. When the machine is collapsed, the finger 91 prevents effective operation of the locking-lever 68. Specification 220,061 is referred to.
